A maverick did something great...
Most of you probably know it already, but JJB won the Gold medal with the Puerto Rico national basketball team in the Central American and Caribbean games. Other NBA members from the PR team were Carlos Arroyo from the Heat (yuck) and Renaldo Balkman from the Nuggets.

Puerto Rico Takes the Gold
link
Puerto Rico defeated Mexico to capture the Gold at the Centro American games being held at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
The crowds started arriving very early to see the PR National team go for the gold. With as much as 3 hours before game time the Mayaguez Arena was jammed packed. Local fans had great anticipation in seeing how the rematch with Mexico would turnout. If any additional incentive were necessary , there was always the run in between playmakers, Carlos Arroyo and Omar Quintero who were both ejected when these two teams last met a couple of days ago.
The starting lineup for the Puerto Rico team was, Danny Santiago, Carlos Arroyo, Carmelo Lee, Ricky Sanchez and Jose Juan Barea.
In the 1st quarter, Danny Santiago opened the scoring for Puerto Rico with a dunk in the opening seconds of the game. Jose Juan Barea followed up with a lay up to put the score 4-0 with 8:06 left in the quarter. Puerto Ricos defense made it difficult for Mexico to score in the opening minutes, but Mexico was able to score with 7:40 on the clock for their first basket. With 6:45 Barea made a 3 pointer but Mexico answered back with a 3 pointer of their own. With 6:08 the score was tied at 9 points. Mexico took the lead with a layup to put the score 11-9 with 5:40 on the clock. Danny Santiago committed his 2nd foul early in the quarter and was sent to the bench. With 4:41 left in the quarter it was Mexico leading by 5 points 14-9. On two consecutive occasions Mexico looked to dish the ball to the outside perimeter and scored 3 pointers on both occasions. Another 3 pointer by Mexico and the score was 20-11 with 3:17 on the clock. Puerto Rico called an urgent time out. Puerto Rico was able to deliver a 3 pointer coming out of the time out to cut the lead to 6 points 20-14 with 2:20 left. Nathan Peavy (203-F-85, agency: Limelight Hoops, college: Miami (OH)) brought the house down when with just seconds on the clock, was able to dunk to put Puerto Rico in the lead by one 21-20 as the quarter came to an end.
In the 2nd quarter, Mexico opened with a 3 pointer to reclaim the lead, 23-21, Renaldo Balkman tied the game and seconds later it was Nathan Peavy (203-F-85, agency: Limelight Hoops, college: Miami (OH)) once again making a layup to put Puerto Rico once again in the lead 26-23. Balkman made the Arena explode as he went up for a dunk. Another break away seconds later and it was Balkman once again going for a dunk, the score was 32-23 as Mexico immediately called for a time out. With 6:13 it was Puerto Rico leading by 9 points. Play had to be stopped with 5:46 on the clock as one of the baskets fixtures came loose and the officials had to halt the action. Play resumed and Puerto Rico did not seem affected by the short layoff, Christian Dalmau fired a bomb and scored to put the score 39-27 with 2:30 left in the half. The half ended 42-29 with Puerto Rico well in control of the 1st half.
In the 3rd quarter, Puerto Rico opened up flat and Mexico scored 4 points in a row. Arroyo broke the ice for Puerto Rico with a layup; the score was 44-33 with 7:35 in the quarter. With the game 48-37, Mexico started playing aggressively and would not let Puerto Rico score an easy basket. With 3:29 left in the quarter it was Puerto Rico leading by 13, 52-39. The quarter ended 56-47 with PR in the lead.
Just before the start of the 4th quarter, the crowd came alive once again as over the loudspeakers it was announced that Carmelo Anthony was present watching the game. Puerto Rico opened up with a fast break to start the 4th quarter. With 8:11 left in the game the score was 60-50 with PR still in the lead. Mexico made a 3 pointer with 7:10 on the clock to cut the lead to 7 points, 62-55. Just when Mexico was feeling it, it was Carmelo Lee with a basket to bring Puerto Rico up by 10 points 66-55 with 5:19 left. Puerto Rico started pulling away as Carlos Arroyo drained a 3 pointer to put the score 72-58 with 4:00 minutes left in the game. Mexico pulled within 2 points, 79-77 with 4 seconds left in the game and that would be the closest they would get. Jose Juan Barea secured the win with 2 free throws. The final score was 82-77.
For Puerto Rico, Nathan Peavy (203-F-85, agency: Limelight Hoops, college: Miami (OH)) and Carlos Arroyo both scored 16 points, while Renaldo Balkman captured a total of 16 rebounds.

Let's put this into perspective. How many Central American and Caribbean players are in the NBA? Arroyo, Balkman, Barea, Najera...I'm not saying it's the Special Olympics, but it ain't like JJB just led his team to victory over other world basketball powerhouses.

By what I can see, all Puerto Rico did was just do their own thing. They are ranked #10 in the world, only one close in that area is the Dominican republic which also hace Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva and Garcia from sacramento, but it seems that PR has won this thing many times before.

This aint soccer...there's only one SUPERPOWER Basketball nation, the rest are fighting for 2nd place.
No disrespect to our beloved International players, just looking at the reality...is there any country with as rich of a basketball talent pool as the USA?
Come to think of it, I would love to see the NBA All-Star game move to a USA versus the World format...could that turn into an intense game?

Proportionally, Slovenia and Lithuania (among other countries) have FAR FAR a richer basketball talent pool than the US.

USA first team has the best talent in the world (Howard, Amare, LeBron, Kobe, Dwyane).
NBA All Star: USA vs World : USA would probably loose.

Yeah but they almost didn't let him in.....
They had a sign at the door that said "You must be this tall to participate".
j/k - I love the heart and determination JJB plays with. He is a flat out competitor.

I have thought this was a great idea for years. It would insure that the game would be played too win thoughout the game and not just the last 5 minutes. I would assume that it would be USA born versus the World.

Guadalupe and Martinique wins this one easily. Two islands, the combined population approximately around 800.000 people, and they gave the NBA 6 players.
