Official First Round 2020 thread
Mavs vs. Clippers.
Game 1 - 8/17 8:00pm
Game 2 - 8/19 8:00pm
Game 3 - 8/21 8:00pm
Game 4 - 8/23 2:30pm
Game 5 - 8/25 (if necessary)
Game 6 - 8/27 (if necessary)
Game 7 - 8/29 (if necessary)
My birthday is on August 29th. I'm asking our lord, Luka for a birthday gift of Mavs playing on the 29th.
Mavs haven't been in the playoffs since 2016.
First playoffs without Dirk in 30 years (1989-1990)

Why not make it extra special and ask for a win on the 29th as well?

I'm voting for the Mavs in 7. Dirk's Mavs overachieved in their first playoff series and I think Luka's Mavs will do the same
Who will be our Calvin Booth?

Love your faith, and I hope you're right.
But, there's a pretty big difference between that over-the-hill Jazz team who knew deep down that they'd already missed their window and these Clippers, who should be the favorites to win it all. Not only are they a team built for the playoffs with extreme experience, but they might be the single worst matchup for Luka in all of the playoffs.
I say Clippers in 5, while I hope I'm wrong, I'll still be super high on this team if I'm right. The future is so bright.

Spam Boban. Bring out the Curry, Luka, Klebler, KP, Boban line up.

Toughest matchup possible for the Mavs. They have great defenders, a good amount of scorers and are well coached plus have veterans.
For me the three keys for the mavs to extend the series are:
1. Hit our 3pt attempts. We need to stretch the floor, making 3s will keep them from doubling Luka as much. Allowing for more drives to the basket. We have a bad team % from 3 than its going to be a rough road.
2. Rebounds. We need to control the boards, not allowing second chances and helping us run the floor for easier baskets.
3. Turnovers. Clippers have great defenders. Missing shots is one thing but giving up turnovers and giving the clippers easy baskets will be bad news for us.
Our strengths are to put up fast points, rebounding as a team, moving the ball. We have solid coaching but lack players with playoff experience.
I think we can win two games. To win more we need to play out best basketball and hope the clippers hit a shooting slump would help our chances.

Mavs in 7. I know we have a few flaws, but Luka will raise his game to another level and open things up for KP which in turn will open things up for everyone else and all they have to do is hit open shots, which they haven’t always done.
If Mavs beat the Clippers, I think we go to the finals. Luka is just too good and I think he will have one of the great runs in these playoffs.
GOO MAVS

We are bound to win at least one game. If we win 2 I'll be delighted. Three and I'll consider it a victory tbh

Just win one. Even a single playoff win against a contender could do wonders for confidence...esp since next season will start basically right away.

I agree
All the NBA talking heads say Clippers but I think the Mavs have an opportunity to shock the world. If we hadn't had a world class shooting slump during the bubble games we'd won a lot more. And I think those games are out of the way now

A lot will depend on whether Curry shows up or not. I know his leg is sore, but the guy is just ridiculously hot and cold.

No homer glasses here
What my eyes witnessed vs clippers this season was a complete mismatch and most of that was because the mavs stubbornly tried to play small ball often ending up with defensive matchups that had Curry defending K.Leonard and THJ defending PG.
I don't expect things to change much but if by some miracle RC decides to extend the minutes of KP, Kleber and DFS together up front then I'd give the mavs a slim chance of stealing maybe 2 games at most.
If this series becomes our small ball lineups vs their long wing players it's over in 4 or 5 games and don't expect it to be close.
The Clippers avg margin of victory vs Dallas was 12 points per game. Usually because they would coast until the 4th qtrs
Hell PG made a comment after that last meeting that still rubs me the wrong way. Basically saying the mavs are soft once you take them out of their comfort zone offensively they don't offer much resistance.
And to make matters worse I believe they get Harrell and Lou William's back if I'm not mistaken.

I expect deer in the headlights tonight, but the huge benefit for us is there is no crowd.

Lol
Yeah having no crowd could help the Mavs lessen the pressure
Some players can easily get rattled in the playoffs

Curry didn’t start a single game against the Clippers this season. He hasn’t even played 20 minutes against them yet, and didn’t play at all last game, so I’m guessing Curry on Kawhi never happened.

They definitely shared the floor, it's not totally unlikely Curry ended up guarding Kawhi at some point. I don't recall it, but I can easily imagine it didn't/wouldn't end well.

Sure, it may have happened once. That’s normal basketball stuff. I looked at the game flows on popcorn machine, and most of Curry’s minutes were when Kawhi wasn’t on the floor.
“often ending up with defensive matchups that had Curry defending K.Leonard”
Didn’t happen

Mavs in 1. The Mavs so thoroughly outclass the Clippers that the Clipps decide that they'd rather have Covid and cancel the remainder of their season.

I think the Clippers will all leave the bubble to go join Lou Williams at Magic City

I miss Roy Tarpley's skull tbh. I feel a comeback is needed for this series

SMC0007 was the only one who had Clippers in 6
I still think the Mavs would have won in 7 if we had a little luck in the game 1 & 3 and no KP injury

Take notice of Miami playing zone defenses.
That zone really benefits guys like Duncan Robinson and Tyler Herro. It helps to protect them defensively and keep them on the floor vs Boston more Atheletic wings.
Mavs never would go all in on a zone to protect our weak wing defenders. We trusted them way too much in man coverage all post season.
Doing the championship season the zone was used pretty frequently by the Mavs.
Sometimes the lack of adjustments or refusal to try something different can be very frustrating watching this coaching staff especially when you watch a guy like eric Spoelstra find ways to get the most out of his team defensively.
Seems like defensively every since Dwayne Casey left just has never been the same.

I'm on board with the take on zone D.
But in fairness, not to take anything away from Casey, Stevenson, Marion, Kidd and Chandler is a rrreally good defense.

I love Miami, and I love their variety of zones, too.
Both the Heat and the Mavs have young players, but the difference is that with Miami, Herro, Robinson and Nunn are mixed in with Dragic, Butler and Crowder. Almost everyone on the Mavs' team just played their first playoff series, and ALL of their leaders are very low on experience. Point being, I'm sure Carlisle has implemented more in practice than he feels he can get away with in real games, especially against good teams.
Imo, they severely OVERachieved this year, given their lack of experience. I expect that they learned a TON this season. They'll get there.
