Arenas tears meniscus, out 2-3 months

WASHINGTON -- Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Arenas was to have surgery Thursday on his left knee and is essentially done for the season.

Arenas was diagnosed with a lateral meniscus tear and was to have arthroscopic surgery later in the day at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington. The Wizards said the recovery time will be two to three months, meaning he might play again this season only if Washington manages to make the NBA finals without him.

Arenas was injured in the first quarter of Wednesday night's 108-100 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Wizards have lost both of their All-Stars to injuries in less than a week. Caron Butler broke a bone in his hand in Sunday's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks and is out for six weeks.

Without their two best players, the Wizards are stumbling to the finish of what was a promising season only two months ago. They lost back-to-back games Tuesday and Wednesday to the lottery-bound Bobcats and have fallen behind the Miami Heat in the race for the Southeast Division title.

Arenas averaged 28.4 points and six assists in 74 games this season and made his third consecutive All-Star appearance. He started every game until Wednesday night, when he was benched at the opening tip-off for being late for a shootaround earlier in the day.
Arenas entered the game late in the first quarter and was injured less than two minutes later, when Charlotte's Gerald Wallace inadvertently crashed into Arenas' knee after an off-balance reverse layup. Arenas, who was battling for rebounding position, was unable to avoid Wallace and his knee bent the wrong way, much like that of a quarterback who has been hit low by a rushing lineman.

It is the first significant injury for Arenas since an abdominal strain sidelined him for 27 games during the 2003-04 season. He missed only two games each of the last two seasons.

Arenas finishes the regular season with 2,105 points scored, becoming the franchise's first player since Walt Bellamy to score more than 2,000 points in three consecutive seasons. He also established a single-game franchise scoring record with 60 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 17.

I always hope no player is injured, whether he is on a team I like or dislike. That is why I hope Wade is back before the playoffs. When your win the championship you don't want people saying they wouldn't have won if so and so weren't hurt. Bring them all on healthy and roster full.

Is arthroscopic surgery the same as or related to the microfracture knee surgery that Webber/Kidd/Amare had? I hope not as I'd hate to see Arenas' career seriously affected.

ya i hate to see injuries as well as I'd like all teams at full strength for wins to be legit. there does seem to be a lot of injuries to key players this year, especially the end of this season. I didn't think his injury was that bad as he walked off the court but ya never know I guess.

krstic is a nice player, but he isn't a tough guy who alters shots..that's really what the nets and wizards need. They have plenty of offense on the perimeter.

Gilbert Arenas Suffers Lateral Meniscus Tear

Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced today that guard Gilbert Arenas has sustained a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, and the tear will be repaired by arthroscopic surgery. Arenas, who suffered the injury in the first quarter of Washington’s game vs. Charlotte on April 4, is expected to be out for 2-3 months.

"Gilbert was performing at an elite level," Grunfeld said. "It’s unfortunate that this injury occurred, but being the competitor that he is, Gilbert will approach his rehab regimen with the same work ethic that has made him one of the league’s most outstanding performers. We expect him to make a full recovery, and we know that his teammates will be up to the challenge to respond in his absence." Arenas will undergo arthroscopic surgery today at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. The surgery will be performed by Wizards team physician Dr. Marc Connell. Arenas will begin rehabilitation next week, and is expected to make a full recovery.

“For our players right now, this could be a shining moment. It is a shining moment for the coaches also. When your two best players are down, you are coaching a team that must move forward and you have to get them ready to play. You have to do things to go to their strengths. Our strength now will be Antawn, Etan (Thomas) and Darius (Songaila) in the post, and our pick-and-rolls with DeShawn and Antonio Daniels. We are going to have our spot-up shooters in Roger (Mason Jr.) and Jarvis (Hayes). These guys have been a big part of our success.”

“We knew he would not be back tomorrow or Saturday. We thought it was a possibility for playoffs, but now he is done for the season. The identity and the make up of the team will be different. We go from a scoring team to a team that is really going to use the clock and do a lot of simple things and take advantage of what we have.


"We are going to stay positive. We have a guy that has won a NBA Championship (Antonio Daniels) that is going to be directing the team. We have guys that have been successful before, and it is time for them to step up. It is always tough when you lose your best player, and we lost another All-Star in Caron, but it is basketball and no one is feeling sorry for us. We are going to feel like no matter who we play we have the opportunity to win. We have some talented guys that can go out there and get it done.”


On making necessary adjustments:
“We just have to adjust on the fly, and I think mentally it has soaked in what we are going to be doing for the rest of season and going into the playoffs. I think the most important thing is we need to get some wins and build some confidence within ourselves and get some momentum going down the stretch.”
