Default Zone defense

I ran across an article from September about zone defenses in the NBA and thought it might be of interest. It still boggles my mind how little the Mavs utilize them. It's not as if they never had any success with them.

3rd and 4th paragraph of the article

"As a coach, when your team gets down and you're looking for something to try to give your team a spark, you try to change the game," Vogel said. "Sometimes it's a lineup. Sometimes it's a coverage. Sometimes it's zone defense, throwing it out there, just to break their rhythm a little bit.

"It doesn't always work. It did tonight."

I really like how Miami strategically used last year.

Yeah, Spoelstra did an excellent job. I saw Miami advancing in the playoffs and was just completely frustrated with the Mavs because they practically refused to play zone.

Zones usually require less energy to play, and offensively solid passing is at a premium.

I imagined Boban and KP anchored in the paint in a 1-2-2 or 3-2 and just daring somebody to drive the basket. Heh
