PGT: Leaving Florida with a split
Solid game. Defense in the 2nd half got pretty bad at times but ok overall. Dalembert was the only player the did not impress me at some point.
Sixers up next!

Great to see the Mavs come out with plenty of fight tonight for what could have been a let down game after the Miami loss.
Dirk looked good from deep.
Calderon w 9ast and ZERO TOs.
Ellis seems to make this offense go when he stays within himself and he did that for most the night.
Blair has been such a pleasure to watch. (Both he and Sammy picked up a bunch of fouls)
I'm not a fan of Marion taking 3s, but he hit a couple tonight...so there's that.

6-4 is better than 5-5. At least one better.

Not to be nitpicky but Calderon deserves a TO for not not taking a TO on that inbounds play.

Ellis still wasn't super efficient. 19 points on 19 shots. But he did keep the turnovers to 3...which might be a season low for him.

Dirk looks to be rounding into shape. Interested to see how the rotations change when Devin and Brandon come back. Carlisle's rotations were a little strange against Miami but seemed more stable tonight. Maybe its just the bench guys playing better?
Someone mentioned this previous but not a big fan of bringing Dirk back at the 5 min. mark of the 4th. There are so many stoppages down the stretch that he should be fine coming back a couple minutes earlier. Shave a couple minutes of court time off somewhere else.

Also it did seem that the team got the memo to get the ball to Dirk down the stretch tonight, which is encouraging.

Really good game from them tonight. Defense at times was pretty horrible but.....
Blair's motor is really good for the team. That 5 foot push shot he has really is a nice little play. It will be interesting to see what Carlisle does when Wright comes back. Blair's deficiencies do not show up against poor teams. But they are huge against the upper tier teams. Defensively the Mavs just cannot sustain him as the 5 against them. Maybe Carlisle will play Blair as the 4 next to Wright. I see some issues offensively with that but hopefully he will try it. Blair/Dirk work well offensively because Dirk is such a floor spacer. Wright? Not so much.
Calderon--(Edited because I thought he hit 2.....) He may not have had a turnover but he doesn't really create anything either.. His defense though is not that bad. He struggles against the waterbugs (who doesn't?) but he is pretty solid.
Ellis--That play to Marion in the corner in the 4th was a beautiful play. As much crap as he gets for being a chucker, he sure can pass the ball. IMO, he actually sees the floor better than Calderon. He had a pretty good game tonight. Nothing flasy. Nothing out of control.
Marion--Looks like he is getting his corner 3 back from his Phx days. Mavs sure could use that in their arsenal. Everything else from him is just solid. He pretty much is the model of consistency with the Mavs.
Dirk--A lot more animated these last two games than he had been to start the season. His 3 ball looks so smooth. Looks like he doesn't want anything near the paint, probably saving some wear and tear for later.
Mekel--He is a good passer, but he needs to get in sets quicker and he needs to not be tentative. Just be decisive when you have the ball.
Carter--Has he ever taken a 3 at the 3 point line? Wish he could get to the basket a little more. He pretty much is a screen and roller 3 point shooter nowadays.
Crowder--Plays within himself so much better this year. Not a detriment to the team and is starting to make some hustle plays here and there.

He already has 2 games of less than 3 TOs.

We're continuing to beat the teams we're expected to beat, and losing to those who we're expected to lose to. Nonetheless, I did like what I saw tonight. I think we'll cruise passed Phily on Monday and then Wednesday when the Rockets come to town, we'll have a chance to get that signature victory. It's on ESPN so we'll get a chance to show people how good this team is.

The "you won't see that too often" stat of the night:
Dirk was -1 tonight, while Blair was +18

You get extra points for shoving opposing players to the ground.

That Blair foul was the laugh out loud moment of the night.

Orlando has beaten some good teams at home like the Clippers. The Mavs bounced back nicely tonight to get over last night.

Very nice to see the Mavs hold a lead throughout the entire 2nd half. When the Magic cut the lead to 4 with 6 minutes left, the Mavs got 3 straight stops, which was crucial, since they did not score for over a minute.
Last year's team could not hold off a surge from anybody, it seems. The individual defense was weak and the team d was even worse. We still have mediocre wing defenders, but they seem to be trying harder, and getting more help from Blair and Sammy than they ever got from Brand and Kaman. If Carlisle could win a championship with Jason Terry on the floor at crunch time, maybe he can build a decent defense around Ellis and Jose "I'm not a matador" Calderon.
We had some good play in those last six minutes...Blair had 2 big steals. Dirk had a killer 3, then a cross court pass out of a double team to a Calderon touch pass to a wide open Ellis. Monte also gave up his body for an offensive foul sealed the deal. These were all the kind of plays we just were not smart enough to make last year (or last night in Miami). When Dirk is involved at crunch time, good things happen. Calderon even hit Blair wide open in the lane by faking a pass to Dirk. They should put the end of this game on a loop to remind everyone. Last year's guards lacked the smarts and/or the ball handling skills to make it happen.
Hope its something we can build on when we get our injured players back.

Our defense was hard to watch at times?? How about our offense was hard to watch? There was a 9 minute, 35 second stretch between the 3rd and 4th qtrs where we only scored 7 points!! Thats what made it close there at the end because our defense is what it was. And besides in the second half all they were doing was just driving into the paint and getting foul calls. And I loved Dirk's 3 in the 4th. He had just had enough. And Blair's pass to Dirk in the paint for the free throws was the dagger.

LOLOL so true. He's actually not bad at the long 3. Btw you can only respect the guy for the work he's put in on his jump shot and range the last half of his career. Sometimes when players get to that point where dont get into the paint as easily, they can just drift into irrelevancy.
