Hindsight: Mavs Blueprint to a Championship--Nerdy-style
I decided to replay this season last night on NBA 2k7, taking into account the Mavs' regular season performance, playoff collapse, future cap status & draft picks, etc. Of course, the results from NBA 2K7 are as good as fact. Here's how the team SHOULD have looked this year:
Starting lineup:
Terry
Stackhouse
Howard
Dirk
Diop
6th man:
Devin
Top reserves:
PJ Brown (acquired via trade for Dampier)
Jon Barry (free agency)
Elden Campbell (free agency)
Also managed to acquire Drew Gooden's expiring contract in the mix somewhere, and rounded out the roster with Moe Ager, Erick Strickland, and some center who was so inconsequential to my championship run that I don't even remember his name.
Regular season: 57 wins, tops in the west. Ran through Memphis in Round 1, Phoenix in Round 2, San Antonio in Round 3; beat the Wizards in the finals. All four series were decided in five games.
I think it's pretty clear what the Mavs should have done based on this 100% reliable simulation. Oh, and Donnie would get executive of the year for pulling off the trade of Dampier & Anthony Johnson to Chicago for PJ Brown, Chris Duhon and Chicago's #1 (Duhon was then included in the package that landed Drew Gooden on the end of my bench).
