6-3: Wolves "Spark" the Sleeping Giant
Quote:
The young Minnesota Timberwolves are taking their lumps while they learn from the rest of the NBA early in coach Kurt Rambis' first season.
In doing so, they may have actually taught the league a lesson on Friday night against Dallas — don't make Dirk Nowitzki angry.
Nowitzki scored 15 of his 20 points in a tense third quarter and also grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Mavericks to an 89-77 victory over the Timberwolves, who have lost nine in a row since a season-opening win over New Jersey.
"Sometimes you've got to pick your battles. You don't want to do anything to spark a sleeping giant like that," Wolves rookie Jonny Flynn said. "You want to just let him sleep the whole game."

"I'll f*ck him up next time for you." --Drew Gooden (to Barea when Brian Cardinal fouled him)
This quote was accidentally caught on tape. Recap is incomplete without it.

Seriously? Is there video/audio of this somewhere? I'd love to hear it.

This was an ugly game for most of the night, good that the T-Wolves are so awful scoring baskets. The Mavs played down to their level , missing really easy shots on several occasions. They started slow again, but at least they didn't fall behind. Dirk didn't seem to feel like taking it to the basket, but that's OK as long as he makes his jumpers. You want to save the banging under the basket for games against better opponents. Amazing that he gets to 20/10 without doing much. Beaubois started strong again, but he's still to learn how to continue scoring after the first few makes. Gooden was not as bad as many here say he is normally. I think he's a good option off the bench. I like Marion's game too especially when he makes those high-percentage baskets in the paint.

Agree 100%. I was only able to catch the last few minutes, so that was the highlight of the game for me.

Nice to see a decent game from Gooden. Seriously, he'll be fine. I know everyone hates him around here, but the guy did just come back from bruised ribs. The three blocks are encouraging.

Read and watched the recaps now.
What was wrong with Hollins? Over-motivation? Too less sex?
That was now the 3rd game that Kidd-Boobie was starting and Kidd opened to a sucessful op to Boobie (1 pre, 2 rs). The other night he tried with Josh. When the other teams gonna pick up on that?

Thanks for this heads up. Just watched it. 7:16 left in 4th quarter. Liked it, also liked Gooden's foul on Hollins. He's still not very good at basketball though.

seriously? Did Dirk take the first half off again? This team will need a leader to actually light a fire to start a game, not just talk about it.

Roddy scored the first 7 points for them. And Dirk oly had 3 shots in the first quarter (6 for the first half).
It has been Dallas's MO for the last several years to let someone else try and score early and then feed Dirk more as the game goes on.

Rambis received a technical for arguing with officials and Hollins was ejected after picking up two technical fouls in the quarter. The first came during the initial standoff with Nowitzki and the second when he threw an elbow at Drew Gooden after a flagrant foul later in the period.
"They came out determined at the start of the third quarter and then after Ryan got ejected, they went on these runs," Rambis said. "This team is just not experienced enough to control those situations."
Hollins' biggest youthful mistake of the night may have come after the game when he walked into the Mavericks' locker room to greet some of his former teammates. The appearance raised the eyebrows of several Mavs, even though Hollins was there in peace.

Am I the only one who feels genuinely sorry for Ryan Hollins? He wasn't hitting much if not for his midrange J(btw, what's the point of him taking these?), but he did an ok job on the defensive end and pulled down some rebounds for a change (actually he outrebounded E.Dampier) - only to pick up two quick technicals in the deciding minutes in the third and get ejected.
The first one seemed like a harsh decicision, although I'm not sure the cameras catched everything what was going on, but he stayed calm enough to push his teammate away from Dirk when Flynn was going at him. Not long after that, he gets tricked by Gooden to throw a half-assed elbow at him and earns his automatic ejection.
And although these incidents may have led to Dallas extending their lead to 20, he showed no hard feelings after the game and comes to the Mavs locker-room to greet his former teammates, only to "raise some eyebrows".
I'm not sure what that exactly means, but I'd want at least some some of the Mavs to have some nice words for a former teammate who "comes in peace", after they took a double-digit win which was never in danger in the fourth quarter, from his new team's homecourt. Especially if that player's unfortunate ejection may have played a role in how the rest of the game developed.
Not very proud of my Mavs in this regard.
But other than that a good win, again fueled by good defense.
random observation of the night: JJB had a rather bad game, Roddy had his ups and downs, but you know what: Ramon Sessions continues to look awful in Minny!

If you want to say hi to all your old friends, wouldn't that make more sense to happen before a game, not afterwards, when things are heated and when people are probably pissed off, for one reason or another? Seems logical to me...

Also, it's a f'ing AP recap. You don't know how Hollins was greeted by the Mavs players, I'm sure they were mostly cordial. "Raised eyebrows" is just a BS self-interpretation by the writers. Sure, I'm sure some players were surprised, but I doubt anyone was openly rude or hostile.
Also, both his techs were easily deserved. It was nice to see Dirk talk back to he and Flynn. After the game Dirk said "Hollins like to throw elbows...at same point enough is enough."

Yeah, the writers want a storyline and they milk it for all its worth, even if there wasn't really a storyline to begin with.
I also wonder how soon it was after the game. I get the feeling that Hollins probably didn't jog off with the Mavericks right into their locker room, even though the recap would want you to believe that. It was probably right before the Mavericks were going to hit the road...Hollins walks in, everybody has showered and is in street clothes, and he's like, "hey guys, sorry about what happened, didn't mean it personally." That's how I picture it...

That's about what I imagined how it happened, and the recap made it sound as if there were some hostility(or why else should it be his "biggest mistake of the night? He also got ejected in the midst of the third quarter!) from the Mavs players. But since nobody else picked up that storyline, I guess you're right and there wasn't a newsworthy storyline to begin with.
It's just not very interesting if "raised eyebrows" only means people were surprised.

I've been monitoring Flynn's development as a rookie, and generally I used to like him until he started yapping off to the Uberman which pissed me off... Flynn is a jerk, I expected better from him.
