Jameer Nelson...not really good so far
All talk about Parsons not bringing the expected performances, but Nelson is the one for me that really disappointed so far.
I know he doesnt need to score a lot with all those guys around but his defense sucks badly and his shot looks way of. Assists Numbers are down aswell compared to last year.
I hope he can turn it around soon. Maybe Felton plays like the Felton before he got lazy and fat.

Nelson disappointed you? Is his 2.7mill too much?

For a starting PG that averaged 12/7 last year yes.

For 2.7mill, I really can't complain. He's been a nice leader for the team and is doing well. PG is the hardest position to learn and our system is brand new after years with Orlando. I expect him to do better over the year and he also has much diminished role. I'm just glad that we got him-- if we ended up only getting Felton/Harris/Mekel, that'd be even weaker. Nelson seems to be getting along with the vets and taking his role in stride.
Also 7/4 on a .750 team is better than 12/7 on a .280 team in my book.
Nelson will be fine. His FG% will go up and his TOs will go down. He still won't average 12/7, but we dont need those to go up-- just efficiency and comfort.

It takes more time for Nelson to learn about the system, last game he might be off, but it won't last for long, glad we have so many options off the bench with Harris and Barea, and Nelson is the best shooter when comparing to them, his shot will fall, remember the early Calderon? take it easy bro

I think Nelson will eventually settle in and be fine.
However knowing RC and Barea's relationship I'm wondering if Barea will have more of a prominent role going forward if Nelson continues to struggle.
I don't see JJ as a starter but it wouldn't surprise me if he continues to close out games...possibly even when Harris returns.
This team is missing a floor leader and Barea plays with the confidence it takes so he might assert himself into that role.

He's been bad. He should be looking over his shoulder right now, hoping that Felton has nothing left.

He's definitely going to have to find his three point shot. If he could just start hitting his spot-ups and quit pressing so much I think he'd probably be safe in his starting job. But range is really the only advantage I expected him to have over the other PG's on the roster, and if that doesn't play out in the games it becomes very difficult to justify playing him anything more than garbage minutes.

Nelson's been pretty terrible. I also want to see what Felton's got. Regardless, Nelson is currently at most the team's 3rd best PG, behind Devin and JJB.

Nelson can get almost any shot he wants in this offense. It's up to him to focus and knock it down.

He got good shots, just missed them. Knock them down and everyone is happy. He has a feel for the game, on both sides. He will be fine.

That's not his job in this offense, though. And therein lies the problem.

Small sample size. I'd bet on him being up to about his career averages in terms of per game averages, and hopefully slightly higher efficiency. Being the 5th option on offense is new to him so I expect there to be some adjustments.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Nelson plays a role. His role is to start, not be a superstar on this team. This allows mavs to come off bench with firepower or change of pace at PG. Nelson doing exactly what he needs to do. If you start tinkering with the lineup at pg you may create deficiencies off the bench or mess with chemistry. Our success under Carlisle has been greatly attributed to players accepting their role and doing things for the greater good of the team, not as individuals. Im betting too that he's going to come closer to his career averages as the season rolls along.

Carlisle has almost always had a starter in name only. But not a closer. Jameer is fine in this role. And I think his shooting will get better.
I do get a sense that he thinks he's a little better than he is. it is up to him to take his open shots and try not to do too much.

Being a PG in a new team/system is tough, very tough. Getting to know when it's your part to score, where everyone likes to have the ball and so on... So, let's give him time.

Completely different scenarios. Dirk played like crap this game(though he defended incredibly well in the second half)but he's played great for a long time including this year. Nelson is effing awful defensively. Just stunningly awful. I wasn't kidding and no it wasn't a knee jerk when I said he was the worst defensive pg Iv ever seen. Did you not see Lin torch him last night? Beverly torch him tonight? I don't see his value to this team
