Cowboys owner gives $4,500 to Little Cowboys
SAN ANTONIO -- Surrounded by pint-sized football players and cheerleaders, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones helped get the Little Cowboys' season back on track Monday.


Someone broke into the South Side Little Cowboys' concession stand Thursday, stealing food, roasters, football equipment and damaging property.


The loss for the nonprofit sports association, part of the Pop Warner league, totaled about $4,000 and almost derailed the season for more than 160 players and cheerleaders aged 5 to 12.


Jones visited the field where the South Side Little Cowboys play and presented a check for $4,500.


"This is something that the kids, and everyone on the South Side, will remember the rest of their lives,'' Ronald Olivarri, president of the South Side Little Cowboys, said in a story in Tuesday's San Antonio Express-News. "It's not even about the money anymore. It's about him coming out here to help us.''


Jones presented the check from Dallas Cowboys Charities. He told the 400 children and parents gathered around him that the contribution was to acknowledge all that parents and volunteers do year-round for youth sports.


"This is more about that than getting more equipment,'' he said.


The Little Cowboys' season opens Sept. 7.


Area Wal-Mart stores have pledged $2,000 worth of items for the Pop Warner football team, which has roots dating to 1958.
