Peja to miss road trip
Quote:
The instability at small forward continues for the Dallas Mavericks. Peja Stojakovic will not make the trip to the West Coast today, meaning he will miss his fourth and fifth consecutive games Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Mavs open the two-game trip at the Portland Trail Blazers and then face the Golden State Warriors. Stojakovic felt stiffness in his neck and back last Tuesday and has not been able to play or practice since.
Shawn Marion, who has scored 47 points on 21-of-35 shooting in the past two games and has started all three in Stojakovic's place, is expected to remain in the starting lineup.
"We'll have a better idea when we get back," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of Stojakovic's situation. "He's made some progress, but there is not a set timetable."
Stojakovic played in just 13 games, starting all of them, since being acquired by the Mavs before the injury set him back. He had played in just eight games prior to joining the Mavs due to a bum knee.
Newly acquired small forward Corey Brewer is also a possibility to see increased playing time, although he has averaged just nine minutes in five games. DeShawn Stevenson, Carlisle said, also remains in the mix.

What's the difference between Corey Brewer joining us and Kendrick Perkins joining the Thunder? Perkins is starting the first game he's available to play in tonight. Brewer has collected how many minutes in the 2 weeks he's been with us?

(In my best McEnroe) You cannot be serious with that comparison. I'd like to see Corey get more minutes, too, but he has nowhere near Perkins' resume as an NBA player.

Nah, I'm just looking at how long does it take for a player to get comfortable in a new system. I mean, would have like to see Cardinal's minutes go to Brewer.

Cardinal's PF minutes aren't going to go to Brewer, and it's debatable whether all of Cardinal's SF minutes necessarily need to go to him when the opposing SF is Artest or someone with a similar game/body-type. But like I said, I would like to see him get more minutes. Of course, I'd also like to see all the nonsensical whining and overreaction on the board get toned down.

I agree, but like GMC said, it's not a fair comparison. If Brewer were as good as Perkins, he'd be playing a lot. It's not like Rick took a long time to start Butler or give him substantial minutes. He started his first game here.

As far as I could see, he wasn't on the floor during the media availability during practice today. He was there on Saturday before the Lakers game.

This is what rotoworld.com announced after his good performance against Houston on Feb 12th:
Quote:
Peja Stojakovic hit 8-of-12 shots and four 3-pointers to score 22 points in Saturday's win.
He also had four rebounds and a steal in 28 minutes, and played very well tonight. As long as he's healthy and starting he's worth a look in fantasy. But it's probably only a matter of time until his back starts acting up. Feel free to pick him up and use him until the wheels fall off.
|
Seems like they were dead on. He had issues all year long, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he will continue to miss games here and there.

Darn... I was all ready to bring my home-made Peja-head-on-a-sticks to the Mavs@Warriors game and wave them around when he hit a 3... of course, he wasn't hitting them anyway, so maybe it's a moot point.

It's not really about wether Brewer is as good as Perkins or not. There is a much more pressing need to start Perkins or at least get him a good dose of minutes. Here in D, we don't need Brewer near as much as we needed Butler or as much as Okla needed Perk. There are other players that are better at his position and we are a deeper team in general. Brewer isn't gonna start and isn't looked at as the same size piece of the puzzle for the respective teams.

Nice I'm going too, I think I'm down across from the Mavs bench. Tried to get the 10 buck discount for a GSW gimmick, Bollywood night, wouldn't give it to me.

That's all definitely true, but obviously one of the reasons we don't "need" Brewer as much as Butler or OKC needs Perk is because Brewer is not as good as those guys....
Depth or not, if a guy is as good as Butler or Perkins, he's gonna play a lot. If Brewer was some borderline all-star, suddenly we'd "need" those skills a lot more than we do now, even with the same roster.

Mavs have been having a little more trouble scoring without Pena. Better defensive teams for sure but..
