What free software do you recommend for download?
I recently downloaded a copy of CursorFX and it rocks! Lets me customize my XP cursor. Has a dozen to choose from. And a program named Jeffs's Fish is cool too. It lets you watch a fish that swims around your desktop while you work.
Any other suggestions? Feel free to write in anything. I get mine from download.com so I know it's clean.

OpenOffice (!)
Avira
Spybot / AdAware
GOM Player
TextAloud if you'd rather listen than read (though you'd want to purchase a better voice if you do it a whole lot)

Notepad++ is the greatest thing that ever happened to someone like me that spends way too much time going through huge log files.
Daemontools is a very specific thing but should never be left off a list of best free software.

How could I forget Putty.
Does anyone still use Winamp? Were this thread created in 2000 I could see listing it.

I had winamp for a long time, and yet I haven't had it in a long time.
Gimpshop is a good one. I love the gimp. (Go ahead, quote me on that one)
PuTTY was great in college. Don't really use it anymore.

Yup, also a good one, although that's the one I stopped using after college. I still use Putty when I want to dink around with a few things on my webserver.
To U2's question, I'm sure he has no use for such techie programs, but let's branch it out some. I like seeing what other little programs people use.

VLC media player. simple, plays anything. Plays stuff(video) my WMP/Realplayer/Divx won't play sometimes for reasons that are beyond me.
newztoolz - decode RAR and PAR files for free if you don't want to pay for winRAR.

How could I forget VLC? I use it for all media files.
link
I use the winzipped version, because I don't like it making file associations for me.

I feel like there is some good stuff that I'm missing out on simply because I do not understand the lingo of this thread...
but I am a fan of mp3mymp3.com
it can record anything that comes through your speakers and save it. Very cool for recording stuff (like live songs off youtube) and then adding to your iTunes.

Good one with the notepad++ thig. I have never actually seen that before. I opened a PHP file or two and I like the dotted line connecting the control structures...and the tabbed files.

Yup. I mainly use it for reading log files, so I use the bookmarking feature, and different types of finds, etc. And of course the tabs.
It's pretty flexible too. I've never used it for PHP, but it handles sql and xml nicely, among others.

yeah man, winamp...it really whips the lama's a$$.
I still use it. It is simple, and not bloated. I only want mp3's on there. I hate itunes. In fact i have a few ipods, but i use an open source tool to sync the ipods. No big deal.
Also, for video i use media player classic/windows media player.
I also downloaded and installed Ace Mega Codecs, which is just a giant 100+ meg pack that contains every codec you could ever want..for playing media.
but ugh yeah..
and i mentioned PuTTY because i was using it at that very moment to connect to an cisco ASA.

Strcm
VSO
VNC or preferably UltraVNC
Cygwin -- been working with it too long to do without it.
PuTty of course.
WinSCP
VLC
GenControl
DaemonTools is great.
MediaCoder works like a champ.

VNC...yeach.
I can't stand it when I have to work with a server in the lab that is still on Win2000, so I have to use VNC to console in rather than Remote Desktop.
It was good in it's day, but it's a terrible replacement for RD/Terminal Services nowadays.

Can't stand Remote Desktop. I have spent more hours having issues with it than I care to even think about. It has it's place I guess, but I am not a fan.
Terminal Services is another story altogether -- I'd rather set up Terminal Server and use thin clients than deal with the end-users screwing up a PC.
I have had very very little trouble out of VNC in the last 15-20 years -- so I guess I just keep using it. Since Ultra VNC came out with encrypted sessions, I haven't found anything that I consider better.
Strcm is a pretty neat one that I got a couple of months ago that will turn on the vnc service when needed instead of it being on all the time. -We use it for security.

Putty is a shell client, meaning you can remote into a linux server and use the command line as if you were sitting in front of it.
Daemontools, mainly, is a CD/DVD drive emulator. If you have a disk image, like an iso, img or bin/cue file, you can mount it on a virtual drive created by daemontools and it will work as if you had a physical disk inside a physical drive.

PuTTY has more uses than that chum.
It provides a secure Telnet alternative. It's a client though, so your equipment has to be configured for secure shell. You can also use it for straight up old fashioned telnet sessions, but why would you?
edit: the operative word is SECURE. Telnet is/was clear text, which is obviously unsecure.

To further expound on what JThig is saying.
It allows you to store data easily. Just burn a disk to an Iso image, store it somewhere, and then use it in a virtual world instead of needing the disk.
You can put all your installation/movie disks out there on a drive, then remote into a machine running daemontools and load the disk remotely. Then do the load/movie etc. I find it works well for disk copies, etc as well and then I don't have to find the "disk" all the time.
Also, Treesize and Peer Guardian are also good freeware programs.

Open SSH works cleaner in Cygwin, IMO. LOL......at least to my servers since I turn off the telnet port .

Real, Acrobat, Winamp, iTunes and stuff inflated their programms. I recieve update news nearly every day. They get bigger and bigger and eat up my memory, but they don´t improve.
My favorites.
Avira, Spybot & Auslogistics Defrag, they remained slim. Not free but awesome Alcohol 120

Auslogics defrag is nice, but I wish it had a sector map.
Have you ever tried their registry defrag? I've never seen it do better than 6% reduction. Of course, I don't install everything known to God on my computer either.

I´m not a specialist, so i can´t give you informations you can rely on. The reduction results depend on the size of data and how you move it between the drives. Due to defrag requires 15 % free disk space to work properly, i sometimes have to remove some GB to other drives. If some movies stored on a nearly full disk they are necessarily split. When i remove data to reach the 15 % free space and then do the defrag, results are mostly beyond 6 %, so defrag results also depend on what´s free to fit in the fragments.
