Best sequels
I was thinking about this at work today (instead of working, of course.) We all know that sequels almost always suck. But there's at least a few out there that are worth watching. So I tried to think of all the sequels I've seen that I thought were as good as or better than the original.
The Godfather Part II
Empire Strikes Back
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
The Matrix Reloaded (I don't care what anyone says. I loved it.)
That was about all I could think of. Really, sequels generally suck. Can anyone else think of some sequels that were worthy of their respective prequels? (Before anyone mentions the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I left those out on purpose. They were all filmed at the same time, and were also adaptations of already existing works, so I think it was pretty much a given they they would be at least as good as the first one. I left out Kill Bill Vol. 2 for the same reason)

Godfather Part II is the gold standard.

Rocky II was a good sequel, IMO.
Edit: OH! - and Batman Returns.
Double Edit: ...and Back to the Future 2.
Triple Edit (!): ...and Aliens.

You're right. The way I worded it would imply that the second two were somehow unworthy of the first one. I should've made it more clear that all three movies were boring.

I realize we've already been over this, but anyone who thinks that Matrix Reloaded was on an equal level to (or better than) The Matrix forfeits all rights to have an opinion about movies....forever.
I like Spiral, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.
Way funnier than the first one.
Terminator 2 (edit: strking T2 from the list...good movie, not nearly as good as the first.)
The Mummy Returns, although bad, was better than the first.
Lethal Weapon 2.
Shrek 2.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade....not as good as the first...but a good movie and a thousand times better than the second.
The Naked Gun 2 1/2.
X2 and Spiderman 2 were both solid sequels.
I agree with LOTR, Empire and Rocky II.
The Matrix Reloaded or whatever sucked balls.

It's not so much that the Matrix Reloaded was that good, but that the first Matrix was overrated. Either way, I liked Reloaded better.

Actually, yes. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was at least funny, and had witty moments, and interesting visuals. The LOTR movies were visually stunning, but otherwise were nine excrutiating hours about Frodo and Sam walking to a mountain.
Edit: Props to untitled for bringing up Aliens. I wouldn't say it's better than the first, but definitely a worthy sequel.

Actually, with the directors cut it is closer to the best 12 hours of Frodo and Sam walking to a mountain I have ever seen. Of course, that is really not what the story was/is about. But, you know that, surely...(no, I didn't call you shirley, hehe...bad sequel reference)

Is it fair to call Silence of the Lambs a sequel to Manhunter? I think so.
Silence of the Lambs.

Although Dr. No was probably my favorite Bond movie (and it was first), goldfinger, and some of the others were basically on the same plateau.

not to pick on you..... but
"First Blood" was an ok (not great but "eh, adequate") movie... the rest of them made me want to gauge my own eyes and ears out for soiling themselves.
T2 was an ok movie, but NO WHERE near as good as the first (in my opinion, though I know a LOT disagree with me here)
I'm sure American pie 2 was just as good as the first one, the bar wasn't set prohibitively high!
which one was "episode 3"? (the renaming iritated me!) "Return of the Jedi," right ? THat was NO WHERE NEAR as good as the Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back. Although Empire Strikes Back was a GREAT sequel to a GREAT movie... it just went downhill from there.

Jedi was released 3rd but is episode 6. Sith was 6th but is really episode 3.
And Empire rules all because Lucas was hands off.

I'm happy to be the first to point out that toy story 2 was fairly dang good.
MI:III far better than the previous two...
Batman Begins was better than anyother batman flick
I really liked Superman II
Shanghi Knights
Rush Hour 2

Part II was true 80's greatness. III was terrible with the whole "Colonel Trautman goes to Afghanistan and Rambo has to bail him out" angle, but II was vintage 80's, and for that it gets my seal of approval.

Hmmm. It's been a long time since I saw the original, so I guess I'll need to watch it again. I thought T2, while incredibly depressing in some respects, was a great flick.

Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) was obviously the worst of the original three movies. I was referring to the most recent one -- Revenge of the Sith (Episode III).

I can go on for days talking about Star Wars. But, specifically, Return of the Jedi is actually very underrated...Take away the Ewoks (which is the whole problem, like Jar Jar is for the prequels) and you have an extremely applicable situatioin b/w a son and his father.
Imagine that your father was/is a great man, but strayed down the dark path of addiction i.e. alcoholism. Then imagine youself, being the son....you can fill in the rest....then because of your commitment to finding that once great man, you were able to put your father in a situation where HE could see the light for himself in order to save the family he was destroying. That is why I love Star Wars.
