Kevin Martin to the Rockets?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4923777
Seems like it might be gaining some steam.... Marc Stein is reporting it via Twitter.
"STEIN_LINE_HQ
Trade-deadline alert just filed to ESPN.com: Rockets have agreement in principal with Sacramento to acquire Kevin Martin
STEIN_LINE_HQ
Deal could expand before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline into a three-way trade scenario that lands Tracy McGrady in New York with Knicks
STEIN_LINE_HQ
Although full trade details not yet known, one league source told ESPN.com that T-Mac will end up with Kings or Knicks by time deadline hit"
Wow, this would be a huge blockbuster. That'd be one hell of a get by the Rockets.

Nice trade by Houston if so. Although giving up Landry hurts--he's one of the best 4th quarter scorers in the league, somehow.

Good trade for Houston if it goes through, although I still like our deal better (now that Damp is hurt it's probably not even a question anymore).
Next year, when(if) Yao comes back, they'll have a scary team. Not sure if Martin ever got out of the first round of the playoffs though.

I really like this deal for Sacremento if Tmac can stay healthy next year and get lucky with the ping pong balls a 5 of Evans/ T Mac/ Welsey Johnson/ Landry/ Hawes or Evans/ T Mac/ Deonte Green who has played well of late or Caspi/ Landry/ and Cousins (who imo will be the best player in this draft) and they have some depth in Nocioni, the guy who doesn't start at the 3, and Garcia. This would be a really good deal for Sacremento

Man, that is a lopsided trade.
On a more serious note, I would've thought the Rockets would learn by now that having two extremely injury-prone superstars doesn't work.

Only problem with that is that Evans really isn't a point guard so I don't really see him and T-Mac co-existing if they are going to play T-Mac at 2 and draft someone like Wesley Johnson.
I would be petrified to draft Cousins by the way. That dude strikes me as a headcase.

Wasn't kmart the guy everyone was saying was a superstar and we should go after him instead of andre?? I'm confused that there isn't more consternation about this superstar going to houston for what seems like mostly cap room.

Haha, i went to bed yesterday hoping there wont be any other big trades for Martin/Iggy but i really thought exactly this trade would happen.
Well nice move by the Rockets on the paper but now they add again an injury prone to Yao...
I understand the Kings, Landry > Josh

Well count me in as being a bit confused! I'd understand it if Houston was at least taking back Nocioni, but they're not even giving Sacremento any real cap relief going forward! Unless I'm missing something here, Joey Dorsey and Kevin Martin are the only two guys in the trade who aren't expiring...
So it's basically just Martin for Joey Dorsey and Landry's bird rights??

Yes but Landrys has a MIP season, so they get talent back. With dumping Sergio they get rid of some cap.
Probably it was more Martin for talent or Martin + ugly contract for minor talent.
Imaging us doing Martin/Noci, we would have no center right now...

Landry is a Mavs killer, so I'm certainly glad he is off the Rockets.
Martin is a fine pick-up who will look even better when Yao returns.
For the Mavs though, they needed a center as part of the package. If the choice as Martin or Butler/Haywood, then with Damp's injury situation you do the second every time. The Mavs would be horrible defensively if they had Martin right now and possibly no center at all if Gooden was part of the package.

It's a nice get, but losing Landry really mitigates it some. He's not on Martin's level of course, but he is a very salty player.

Honestly, I take the second package ten times out of ten even if Damp is healthy. I'd take Butler straight up over Martin any day because he's a defensive contributor and his contract is a lot better. Getting Haywood on top of that makes it an absolute no-brainer.

I guess I like Butler/Haywood better than Martin, especially given the injury to Damp... But from the Kings perspective I just don't get it... Does Landry have a team option this season? Can anyone actually fill me in on the particulars that make this more than Martin for Dorsey and Landry's bird rights? Or is that it?

This. Houston was the last team in the league that should have even been considering acquiring Martin.

Good trade for Houston, even though they do have to give up a good and productive player in Landry. That said, I still think that our trade for Butler/Haywood is much better for us and our needs, not just in light of Damp's finger injury.

It's now a three team trade, and the Rockets made out like bandits.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4924836
To the Knicks: Tracy McGrady, Sergio Rodriguez
To the Rockets: Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill, Jared Jeffries, The Right to Swap 2011 picks with New York, 2012 First Round Pick via New York
To the Kings: Carl Landry, Joey Dorsey, Larry Hughes
Really? They trade T-Mac and Carl Landry and get Martin, Hill and two first round picks? T-Mac still has that much value? That's an unbelievable trade.

Very good trade for the Rockets. NY is really going all in aren't they. Looks like the 2011 pick will be top 1 protected and 2012 pick will be top 5 protected.

Knicks again beyond retarted, they didnt have to throw in Hill AND the pick, one would be enough.
I hope so much their 2010 plan blows

It seems like New York has become the team where the careers of has-been guards go to die.

You'd think Isiah was still in town pulling those strings, the Rockets have Yao insurance. Hill, is essentially another 1st round pick. I'm thinking that 2011 pick gains the Rockets about 10-15 rungs up the draft board in. Can't get Ricky Rubio with cap space....can you? Knicks should move to Atlantic City, if they're going to gamble it away like this. I doubt LBJ nor Wade ends up there. Guessing JJ, Amare because of the cash.

yeah... wtf...?
the Rockets got Kevin Martin (the best player in the deal)
AND 2 barely protected first round pics
AND a top 10 pick prospect from last draft
for Tmac and Landry.... just because they were willing to take on ONE extra jear of Jeffries' contract?
wtf?

Walsh got desperate because he couldnt dump Jeffries or Curry, Morey knew it and squeezed the sh*t out of him.
What a moron, just offer Jeffries +#8 on last draft day for expirings and you have him gone in 5 minutes. Probably even with a late 1st in return.
Now he throw away the 2012 and 2011er swap.
Knicks are retarded. Having since 2 years the Lebron plans and draft SF Gali over Gordon and Lopez and this year Hill over Jennings and dump Hill now....

this trade is nice for houston right now..
wait til next year when he misses 30+ games
you know itll happen..as it does every year, thin players get banged up pretty well
i love k mart but he misses too many games, and he cant defend for shit
the deal we made is better, and we can pick up a free agent this summer

From a Knicks persepctive.
Ouch. Im happy JJ is gone and we have all this cap room but.....good gawd. like was mentioned earlier, Hill (a Frist Rounder) plus the 2 picks that arent really protected. That blows the big ones. Sigh...
Basically, Walsh wouldnt make a deal with the Rockets alone BECAUSE of the Picks. And at the end of the day, Its the same damn deal the Knicks originally offered PLUS H-Town gets Kevin Martin as well.
That Morey guy, one slick bastard ....I want him as GM of the Knicks, Giants and Yankees.
As for T-Mac .....ooooh yeah, Im really effn excited. Come 2010, we better land Wade & Bosh after this mess or I want EVERYONE FIRED including Dolan.
Now if you'd people excuse me, Im gonna get drunk after yet another trade raping of our franchise. Sigh.....

I love the trade for Houston. We got a starting SG with a high efficiency rate and young assets. I also like that Martin goes to the line so much. That's a real benefit when you have Yao.
The aspect that no one is really thinking about is how Morey set Houston up to be a player in free agency through a S&T. $14M in expiring contracts, NY picks, Hill, other young talent like Brooks or Chase and a potential lotto pick this year if we miss the playoffs. How is that not attractive, assuming someone wants to come to Houston?

I think you could have gotten more for Landry + TMAC. Martin is imo a very good second option but I don't think of him as a super star he is ok defensively. Certainly this will help Ariza a ton as he was forcing a lot of bad shots and he is best as a role player. Houston does have some nice pieces for a S + T but I think their biggest piece just landed in Sacremento. To be honest I think you guys over paid for Martin by getting a horrible Jeffries contract, giving up Landry, and T MAC.

Interesting how you say Houston overpaid ... I thought Houston completely ripped off the other teams and got much more value back for T-Mac. T-Mac is like Iverson two years ago ... he's not at the point of retiring (yet), but teams don't really want him, and if they do, they will just pay the veteran minimum for him.
Kevin Martin + 2 first rounders + Jordan Hill is a very good deal. Yeah, they have to take Jeffries, but they weren't planning on making a huge 2010 splash since Yao opted into his contract. Also, Jeffries isn't horrible, he is one of those defensive praised players like Quinton Ross. Jeffries expires next year though, along with ... YAO MING!
Even though Landry was very good, Houston gets a replacement for him in Hill. We haven't seen Hill's potential yet. Also, Landry was going to be a free agent soon anyway, and chances are he would want a lot more than the $3 million he has now. I'm not sure how Houston would approach that situation.
2 draft picks from New York is essentially 2 lottery picks ... very good for getting youth and athleticism.

Like Zki40 said, even if Houston does nothing and lets McGrady's contract expire we would not have the cap space to make a big free agent signing. Which is why taking on Jeffries contract wasn't a big deal for Houston.

ariza wont be comin off the bench for them, battier will.
i like their team no doubt, martin is a stud and they got scoring to go with their blue collar style now.
i still think our deal was better because we got a big man..haywoods contract ends this year, butlers ends next year. so we took back good contracts.
i wanted iggy and martin over butler like most of us, but the deal we got was best for right now, and the future..so im happy with it
and look at the game we played tonight, they both provided solid D and toughness..which is what we lacked the past month while weve been losing.

Houston's team still doesn't scare me. This year, they don't have a center. Landry was probably their most efficient offensive player; they replace him with Martin, whose offensive efficiency is comparable, but he plays zero defense, is smaller (on a team that is already undersized), and is frequently injured. Meh. As for Jordan Hill, well, maybe Houston can get something out of him--the Knicks clearly couldn't, though that doesn't necessarily mean much--Dan Tony's rotations are bizarre to say the least.
As for the future, well, I guess that depends a lot on what the Knicks do this offseason. If they actually do sign two big names--let's say Wade & Bosh--then those draft picks won't be lottery picks, so they're not nearly as exciting as they might seem.
Yao's games played the last five years: 57, 48, 55, 77, 0. Martin: 72, 80, 61, 51, 22 (out of 54). One or both figures to be out for half the season, and nobody else on that roster really scares me.

Even next year they are not that great. Like said, again the two main guys are injury prones.
Both backcourt players are pure scorers with no or less playmaking skillz (same goes the the backup pg Lowry). Yao is screwed, specially when he get fronted from a skilled player. He wont touch the ball anymore.

What more could we have gotten? Examples?
The best offer on the table for T-Mac was the NY one. The Jeffries contract was bad to take on, but we got Hill and pick considerations to take on that contract, which is technically an expiring contract next season (that's a good thing). The only way that hurts the team is that it makes the owner pay lux tax.
What SG better than Martin could we have brought in this summer with our limited cap space, or what better SG could we have traded Landry for?
