Default Preseason GDT: Mavs vs Suns

Played in Indian Wells.

Quote:
While the Mavericks' attention while be on the Suns when the two squads meet in the third outdoor game in the modern era, they'll also have concerned hearts for coach Rick Carlisle back in Dallas, writes Earl K. Sneed.

Basketball quickly became secondary at Mavericks' practice Friday afternoon.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle fainted on the practice court with his team surrounding him, and then all else ceased to be important. Carlisle left the American Airlines Center on a stretcher headed for the hospital, but members of the team's front office said that the head coach was alert and responding well to medical assistance that arrived at the scene.

"I don't know necessarily what happened to him, he looked like he passed out," assistant coach Terry Stotts said. "The medical people came and took him away. Other than that there's not anything else that we know...It's never a good thing and I don't want to get into what it could be or couldn't be. But he was pale, but he was alert and talking. He was moving his body, he stood up. He was alert and talking when they took him away."

With the players scattered on the court working on their individual drills at the time of the incident, point guard Jason Kidd said that no one was aware what exactly took place until they saw their leader on the floor in a daze. The focus immediately shifted from preparing for Saturday's outdoor exhibition contest against the Phoenix Suns to concern for Carlisle.

"I didn't see anything. We just heard the fall, that was it," Kidd said. "We don't know what the issues are. We just hope that everything was alright. Practice, that was it. Nobody practiced. Guys just got a couple of shots up and then guys just kind of went home.

"It's not a distraction. Basketball is our job, but life comes before our job or any hobbies or anything else. Your well-being is the most important thing. That's our coach and our family member, so we gotta make sure that he's alright and we'll go from there."

Carlisle was later released from the hospital in good condition and through a text message confirmed to Mavs.com that he is feeling much better. But his team traveled without their head coach to Palm Springs, Calif. with half of their attention on matching up with the Suns at Indian Wells Tennis Garden and the other half on Carlisle, who is now home resting comfortable back in Dallas.

The Mavs will take the court against a formidable Suns team which replaces the loss of All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire, who is now a New York Knick, with a summer deal that brought back versatile forward Hedo Turkoglu along with the free-agent signing of Josh Childress.

The already-deep Suns advanced to the Western Conference finals before falling in six games to the eventual champion L.A. Lakers. But the Suns have dropped their first two exhibition games as they incorporate their new additions and make up for Stoudemire's departure.

Even with a tough opponent ready to go head-to-head with the Mavs on the court in the third outdoor game in the modern era, the team can't help but think about how Carlisle is doing back in Big D.

"We're all concerned about him and hope that the test proves that everything's OK," Stotts said. "Hopefully it's just a one-time thing...Everybody's concerned about Rick and a preseason game. We got to play the game and prepare for it."

Without Carlisle on the sidelines, the Mavericks will try to ride the momentum of Thursday night's 88-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls, hoping to come out of the desert with a 2-1 record in the preseason. But the team is expected to play without two of its go-to scorers, as both Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry are expected to sit out the game for rest.

Saturday night's outdoor affair between the Mavs and Suns will air nationally on TNT at 8:30 p.m. CT.

Looking forward to see our backup PF options Marion and Mahinmi playing a lot the 4.

And of course DoJo again.

New jerseys look nice. Got my new Dirk road jersey today, so that's great timing.

We know that Kidd-Barea isnt the solution for any postseason success and yet we start him instead of putting Jones beside Kidd...

I see no reason why you'd be less excited going into this season than, say, 2008-2009. We had a new coach, but that was about the only reason to have even slight optimism.

For some reason, after every little thing this season, all of you are reacting as if the Mavs are going to cease from existence.

The Mavs are 1-2 in PRESEASON, JJB is being JJB, and Roddy tweaked his ankle.

Everyone needs to chill the F out and embrace the fact Dallas Basketball is back.

Ahhh but along with that coaching change came so much hope for a new fluid offense that would utilize our players' strengths and create a more dynamic all around attack. Jason Kidd would finally be unleashed and and allowed to do what he does best while Josh Howard was finally going to be able to return to his All-Star form in the new system with Kidd's assistance.

I think if Roddy had been healthy this off-season that would have definitely made a difference but I can't get excited about his potential role this season until 1) he's injury free, and 2) Carlisle shows he'll actually give him significant minutes.

Doesn't matter if Roddy is super, the mental makeup of this team is not capable of a championship. No way can this team do it and there is no one available that is gonna get us over the hump with exception of Deron Williams or CP3 who probably aren't going anywhere. I don't think any team is gonna let go of a strong minded championship caliber SG which is our first need. Temper the expectations and try to enjoy a run for the playoffs which isn't anymore guaranteed than the Cowboys at this point. The league is set up for LA vs Miami with a few spoilers in the mix like Orlando, Boston, S.A.

I'd back off the Mavs-Cowboys comparisons if I were you...

The Mavericks might not be a top contender, but they certainly ARE going to make the playoffs this season. First off, they don't have the coaching problems that the Cowboys do, and even if they did, it doesn't matter so much in basketball... Second, there aren't 8 teams in the West that are better than Dirk + scrubs (and he isn't playing with a bunch of scrubs...)

You may be right about the comparison since we really haven't played a game. We have gotten older and really only added Chandler (who I think will help a lot). I don't know that we don't have any problems with coaching. I'm not sold on RC, this is a very important year for him in my eyes. He has got to be better and work the young guys in more and keep JJB and midget crew off the floor. I might back off the coaching doesn't matter so much in basketball if I were you...I think it does matter, give us Phil Jackson and we would be much better and have higher expectations.

Yeah, because Phil Jackson had more to do with those championships than Jordan or Kobe...

I've seen mediocre football teams coached to a championship, but I've never seen mediocre basketball teams coached to a championship (although I have seen a few mediocre coaches win rings in the NBA because basketball really only boils down to the talent of 5-8 guys...)

Apples and oranges are both fruits and they're round - that's about where the similarities end.

Coaching doesn't make much of a difference in basketball...then why get rid of Avery, we were right there? Or Don Nelson and ask any player if coaching matters especially Kobe or Jordan. I have seen so many people say "Avery got outcoached" etc.. It matters. You have to have a solid team and a solid coach together, the complete pieces. If Miami isn't as good as they should be will Eric Spoelstra remain the coach or will one of the best coaches in the game take over?

And what mediocre football teams have been coached to championships? Pats? Steelers? New Orleans? Colts?

I don't think Avery was as much of a problem with this team as Josh Howard was... We didn't get better when we replaced Avery, but we did get better when we replaced Howard because basketball is a player's game, not a coach's game...

If the Heat lose, it will be due to clashing egos or injuries, not coaching...

Remember all those rings Jackson/Riley won in the following years after Shaq left? Me neither...

The 2002 Buccaneers under John Gruden spring to mind - they had a good defense, but their Brad Johnson-led offense was awful...

The 2000 Ravens with Trent Dilfer under center and Brian Billick as head coach certainly qualifies.

How about the 2007 Giants and the 2005 Steelers? Were Eli Manning and Ben the Bus Driver bigger factors than Tom Coughlin and Bill Cowher? Great defenses and bad offenses make for mediocre teams - it takes a good head coach to pull it all together like they did.

Basketball/football = apples/oranges... Why are we still talking about this?

1) because this is the appropriate place for this convo.

2) You haven't started todays GDT.

I haven't started a Mavs GDT since Game 1 of the Mavs/Warriors series.

I'd hate to jinx them before the season begins...
