Rose could sign one of the Spurs' biggest deals

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs forward Malik Rose signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the team Thursday, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

The contract ranks among the most lucrative deals in franchise history. The Spurs were expected to announce the signing Friday, the newspaper said in a report for Friday editions.

Spurs spokesman Tom James did not immediately return phone messages left by The Associated Press late Thursday.

The Spurs opted to begin the contract at $4.3 million next season, then have it escalate, according to the newspaper.

Under terms of the contract, Rose can opt out after the 2006-07 season. The seventh and final season also is at his option.

Rose's contract is the longest allowable under the NBA's current collective bargaining agreement and the third-longest in franchise history. It also ranks third in total value in franchise history.

Only David Robinson, who signed a 10-year rookie deal that was torn up in 1995, and George Gervin, who had an eight-year deal, have signed longer contracts with the Spurs.

Rose, the team's sixth man, scored 9.4 points and grabbed six rebounds a game last season.

I think that's over signing and paying rose! Isn't he pretty old?
