Rondo-to-Mavs deal nearly finished
http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/...-course-happen
The Boston Celtics are in the process of finalizing a deal to send Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks, according to league sources.
Sources tell ESPN.com that the Celtics and the Mavericks have an agreement in principle to send the All-Star point guard to Dallas for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson and a future first- and second-round draft pick.
The possibility exists that other players will be added to the final deal, but sources indicated that the "deal is on course to happen tonight."
Rondo would join Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons in a high-octane starting five.
Rondo is in the final year of his contract. Rondo has left little doubt in recent months that he intends to test the market as a free agent in July. However, sources say Dallas, amid growing concern about its point guard play and sensing the opportunity to acquire a topflight player it has coveted for some time, is confident it could win over Rondo for the long term.
The Mavericks were one of several teams to express interest in Rondo. The Celtics also had talked to teams such as the Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets about a potential deal, according to sources.

Rondo/Monta/Parsons/Dirk/Tyson...
I gotta say, that starting lineup is pretty sick.

I thought it was pretty sick before the trade went down. Now I just feel sorry for the rest of the league. Our starting 5 will just flat out embarrass other teams. They are going to be damn good!
In 27 games Brandan Wright played 18.7 MPG or about 7.8% of the total minutes played by the roster each game. It's a loss, but it's actually not as big as it feels right now. Rondo comes in with some concerns, the biggest being his career worse free throw shooting percentage. Watch it go up after he comes to Dallas. His name is not Brendan Haywood.
Also Greg Smith will be the backup until the Mavericks bring in another big. Maybe Jermaine O'Neal. Maybe their big man in Japan, Bernard James.
The roster is down to 13 players, and we now know who the starting PG is whenever Raymond Felton is available. It is Rajon Rondo. No more controversy. Who is the primary backup though? Coach's favorite in JJ or Raymond? Only time will tell, but I am leaning towards JJ for now.
With Jae gone I am eager to see what the other players will do with the minutes that become available. We have not seen a whole lot from Charlie Villanueva and Greg Smith so it will be nice to see them in action.

It'll take some time to get him adjusted, but I have faith in Coach Ricky C.

I'm not a huge fan of rondo. But when he's on, he's as good as anyone but Steph curry at that position

I'm a huge fan of his game, especially the way he has elevated it in the past when in the playoffs. There is not a better defending PG in the league IMO when he's playing at the top of his game. We just got to bring that out of him again.

Anyone know anything about Dwight Powell? Sounds like we're getting the 6'10" rookie PF back in the trade... Dude has only played 5 games in the NBA.

Soft for his size. Gifted athletically, can get up and down on the break. Shys away from contact. Spot up shooter, out to about 20, sets up his drives. High IQ....Stanford gives that away. Fits in with the Parsons/Dirk type of 6-10, big man spot up shooter.

I'm not a rondo fan, Iv made that clear. But with that said, this trade makes us have a chance to win a title if everything goes well. We didn't before this trade.

I'm in the same boat. I'm not certain that Rondo is the guy that brings us to the next level... but he could be. The Mavs definitely needed to do something, and really what other options were there for a major upgrade at our weakest position?
We only have a little bit of Dirk left. Now's the time to swing for the fences.

Can't disagree at all. I have always enjoyed Rondo from his playoff performances of the past. Guy simply steps it up. His shooting percentage should jump up significantly in Dallas.

Well it sure as heck cannot go down. I have never paid much attention to him but it's a roll of the dice for sure. If he continues to shoot 33% free throws however, I will have to throw a shoe through my tv.
I mean that is worse than shaq. He is currently 8th from the bottom in ft%. But that is only because there are about 20 below him at 0. UGG...

Couldn't have hoped for a better trade opportunity to present itself. Rondo brings a needed skill set at a needed position, and comes at a fair price. The team is now set up with a broad base of high caliber talent in the starting lineup both for this year and beyond. Bravo, MBT. Bravo.

Not really sure this trade makes us better - hope I'm wrong about that, but I don't like point guards that let the opposing defense play 4 on 5 because they can't hit the broad side of the barn.

Well the key difference between the two being that Kidd had actually developed into a good enough 3 point shooter to actually keep the defenses honest. And Kidd wasn't shooting 33%(!!) from the charity stripe...

True enough. That's why I was so against that trade when it happened. However, Kidd was able to transform into a dead eye 3 point assassin. There is no reason to expect Rondo will ever do the same.
I still like this move though. Gives us defense and rebounding when we desperately need both.

Me neither. I do NOT like guards who cannot shoot.. Never have. Look at dojo, 37ppg in china, but here he stunk because he cannot shoot.

Sick S5
bench:
Barea/Harris/Jefferson/Aminu/Smith (Felton)
Im pretty sure they are working to pick up a solid big and RC gonna work out a rotation to minimize the Rondo/Ellis minutes and give Ellis more run with the bench unit for scoring....

You know, from top to bottom, this might possibly be the best starting lineup the Mavs have ever had... possibly.

Well we don't quite have a superstar, but the league has changed. And any of the starting 5 can have a superstar night.
Just so glad we didn't give up Harris.

Yeah that's the only caveat. Dirk isn't the same player he was even three years ago. Still, this is the only Mavs roster I can think of that had above average talent at all 5 positions.

Well are they wrong? This is a BIG concern of mine right now. We got Rondo... GREAT! And I really mean that because Jameer needed to go, and we were basically playing without a starting PG. But this trade really hurts our depth, doesn't it? One of our strengths was depth and having arguably the best bench in the league. Does anyone have an idea what the plan is? Are we getting anyone else besides Rondo?
Edit: By the way, I hadn't seen any news today. So when I just logged on a couple minutes ago my jaw dropped and I yelled out "WHAT?!?!?!?!" LOL. I knew there were rumours, but I really didnt take them seriously. This is awesome though!!! Who would have ever thought we could have such a MONSTER starting unit?!?!?!

Yes. Brandan was a major cog in the second unit, but losing him doesn't take Dallas from having one of the league's better benches to having the worst. Devin, JJB, RJeff and Aminu are all credible members of the rotation.
And Dallas will bring in another C. My money's on JO, but we'll see.

Better get on the horn quick for JO, there are small murmurs that Bogut might be out a while.

Those idiots also think they'll be able to use the trade exception and a 2nd rounder to get Wright. Morons
Jae Crowder is just a guy. Nothing he does can't be replaced by Jefferson or Aminu.
The only "loss" to the bench is Wright and while it is a big loss it doesn't take us from one of the best benches in the NBA to the worst

Here's a stat
John Schuhmann @johnschuhmann
According to #SportVU, opponents have shot 53% w/ Rondo guarding them this season (50%) & last (55%).

I would be more interested in how they shot in the years previously. Everytime I turned on a Celtics game the guy was doing work on D.

Yea, agree on that. The oppostion % should go down with Tyson as well, where Rondo didn't have anyone like Tyson in past 2 seasons

Not particularly encouraging ...
