Josh Howard More Banged Up Than We Thought

No timetable set for Howard's return

Howard
WASHINGTON -- Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle isn't sure when swingman Josh Howard will be able to play after offseason surgery on his left ankle.
Asked Friday whether Howard could miss the start of the regular season, Carlisle replied: "Stay tuned."
"Giving a timetable was probably a mistake. We have to play this by ear," Carlisle said. "I'll probably announce it the day he is going to play -- whether that is in two weeks or a month or a month and a half."
Dallas opens the regular season Oct. 27.
Howard averaged 18 points and 5.1 rebounds last season, missing 30 games.
Forward Shawn Marion was to play Friday against Washington after missing Dallas' preseason opener Monday with a calf injury.

Here we go again.

Relax. He'll probably get healthy and in game shape before playoff time.

Are we really gonna have to go through this again?....If Howard is gonna be in and out of the line up like last season then I think the Mavs should think about moving Howard, they just need to get Howard healthy enuff to pass a physical when he get's traded, I wouldn't mind the Mavs going after Stephen Jack or Monta Eillis....Eillis next to Jason Kidd would be deadly...I just don't want to see Matt Carroll starting on opening night.

Same here. All the more reason to move him. As the team is currently constructed, I still think we're second-tier. Replace Howard with a versatile shooting guard and we can hang with anybody.

Really? After one pre-season game against Washington? Show up in L.A. on the 30th with Marion and no Josh and see how that turns out.

Mike Miller looked horrible defensively the other day - I doubt he'd mesh with Carlisle's plans (so JET makes him redundant...)

HEEEEEEL NO
Lets not completely through Howard under the bus here. I think he will still be back by the season opener, and he will still have a good year.

He had major surgery on his ankle and did zero basketball activity over the summer. This isn't exactly shocking.

I don't think he's anymore banged up than I thought. I figured he may not be ready to start the season. Like thig said, he had a fairly major surgery and is still recovering. This surgery was supposed to help alleviate the problems with his repeated injuries to the ankle in the past. Let's at least see if he can stay healthy once he recovers from the surgery before we write him off.

Banged up and recovering= not the same thing. He's been through surgery and rehab timetables "unless you are a freak of an athlete, great immune system, great cardiovascular system, reDIculous work ethics" are always in need of some kind of adjustment. Lets not go sound the horn yet

I'm floored by some of the reactions in this thread. The take away should be "Wow, Josh came back late in the season and sparked
our run to the 6th seed then balled his ass off in the playoffs on a freshly sprained ankle and another one that needed reconstructive surgery."

It's so nice to see so many Mavs fans up at this hour.
And put me in the "Come back soon, Howard, we need you because you were great the last time you were able to play" camp.

let me get this straight, you're concerned because josh won't play "preseason" minutes. I could care less if he plays the first 5 games. It's a long season, and any rational person would want him to take as much time as possible to come back at 100% than 80% just so we could satisfy that need to say "josh and marion" are playing together.

Well not preseason exactly, but you're right.. I am just way excited to see Marion/Kidd/Josh/Dirk/Gooden (JET is a bench so..) as a lineup. Also I think the more time that the team gets to play together, the better their chemistry.

Disloyalty? The only loyalty fans need to have is to the team. I'm interested to see how he meshes with the team when he comes back and think a Kidd / Howard / Marion combo could be very good but I wouldn't be opposed to moving him for a player who could help this team more, i.e, a quality starting center.

Dammit Stein, there are no "quality starting centers" available in the league, especially for an injured Josh Howard. Nothing even close to that is going to happen so we should all just drop it already.

The only reason I want JHo to come back sooner is because I'm selfish and impatient and I want to see what the new lineup can do. Other than that though, I say wait as long as he needs.

Howard's an idiotic and selfish p*ssy. Now that the obvious is out of the way, don't go overboard. Just give the guy a little more time. The season doesn't end when the ball is thrown up for the start of game 1.

If we have another troubled Josh season Cuban will look back to the day he (probably) could have traded Buck/Shawne/Filler for Jax...
I would still like Jax in the team. But now it just works with Humphries (everyone love shim) or Carroll...

Just like if I die sad and alone, I'm going to look back on the day that I (probably) could have married Brad Pitt and had a happy marriage and life
I mean, hypotheticals are all so enticing. No one knows if Pitt would marry me or even if we'd be happy together but I can dream right?

In my book, the team is the players, and I'm as loyal to them as they are to the team. That means I still love Mike Finley for all he did for us, and screw Steve Nash who took the money and ran.
Except for his last Summer of Discontent... most of it minor and blow WAAAAY out of proportion, Josh has done nothing but play hard for the Mavs. The way he gutted it out in the playoffs, when he couldn't walk without a limp and couldn't play without an injection earns him HUGE loyalty points in my book. If you don't respect that, then, IMHO, you are a lousy fan.
You can rag on him for his BB IQ, but I am anxious to see how he meshes as well. I think there are few teams who have enough quality swingmen on defense to keep up with him, Matrix and Jet. With Kidd and Dirk at crunch time, That's 3 guys who averaged over 18 last year, plus Marion-career 17.8. Anyone who leaves his man to double team should regret it big time. I see alley-oops and wide open 3's galore in our future.
Stephen Jackson may add some grit, but he's also a head case. I'd take him cheap, but he ain't worth Josh. What if he comes here and keeps whining? Or pouting? Or fighting? Josh is just a solid 18/6 guy. I would only trade him for a pure 2 who scores as well and is a quality defender. There ain't many of those working for what Josh makes.
Get well Josh, then come back and kick some butt, so these weak assed fans can eat their words.

But what if we trade Howard for the elusive, anonymous, and perhaps even nonexistent "a center"?
