LAD - Life After Deron
With Terry leaving and Kidd working on a new contract with the Mavs, we still have the following ammunition to retool our roster (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong):
- $8.9M trade exception
- $5M non-tax payer MLE
- Approximately $9M in cap space
- Still have the Bi-Annual Exception as well
- Someone also let me know if we have a portion of the trade exception left over from the Chandler S&T last year? We used a portion to absorb Odom, but am not sure if we still have the remainder left to use
Looks like the Mavs won't amnesty Haywood and Marion is likely safe as well for this season. Given what's been published to this point, Mavs will likely look for players willing to accept 2 year deals or pursue players with 2 years left on their contract.
My plan:
- Try to fit Kidd into BAE (Doubtful)
- Split DWest and Camby with MLE (Probable)
- Try to swing for a trade with your exception and eat up some cap space for Deng or Iguodala (Possible)
- Poison pill the Knicks and make an offer on Lin

I'll be even more upset if they don't make a serious push for Dragic.

Last time I checked, the roster's pretty empty. Apparently free agency is too, if we're reduced to talking about Goran flippin' Dragic.

Everybody knew what the free agency class looked like after Deron. Are you surprised that's who we're "reduced" to talking about, even though it should have been clear for months that he (and Nash) would be the next best options if Deron decided to stay?

Come on, the kid has potential. He averaged like 16/8 for what, 40 games after he became a starter? On excellent percentages i might add. He's a gamble of course, but we might as well roll the dice at this point, we can't do a total rebuild, so that's the only way.

Dragic is definitely my top choice for PG, then Nash. No Lin - let someone else overpay for him...

Alex Kennedy (no idea who he is) tweeted we're gonna go after Nash, then Lin, he didn't mention Dragic. I would mad as well, because imo not only Dragic>Lin, but Lin is resctricted, also, i don't think we can, or even want to compete with the Raps offer for Nash. We might as well give Dragic the 10 million he wants, especially now that the Rockets are considering offering Lin a same kind of backloaded deal they offered to Asik.

He just tweeted that they'd go after Dragic too. I see some people disagreeing about this on twitter, but I prefer him to Nash.

That seems like a no brainer to me. Why are people so down on the dude? He might be a perfect compliment to Dirk.
And he plays with heart. I NEVER undervalue that.

Dragic is a more talented Roddy. Both are undersized SG's with bad court vision.

you must be kidding. Dragic averaged almost 8 assists towards the end of last season when he was playing starter minutes.

I'm down for Lin, always have been!
Poor Dirk, let him remain in Germany and take the year off while we save money and tank the season for a lotto pick next year, with a side of Dwight (ugh).

Love Simmons:
--One of the show's [Game of Thrones] funniest moments goes to one of the month's funniest moments — Mark Cuban missing Deron Williams's visit to Dallas for the Mavericks' big "Here's why you should play for us, Deron" pitch. Why? Because Cuban was in Los Angeles taping that week's episode of Shark Tank. Does anyone else keep picturing this exchange?
Williams: "So why isn't Mark here? Is he running late?"
(Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle glance at each other nervously.)
Jeff Schwartz (Williams's agent): "Shouldn't we wait for him?"
Nelson (finally): "Mark can't make it today."
Schwartz: "What happened? Family emergency or something?"
(Nelson and Carlisle glance at each other nervously again.)
Williams: "Is everything all right?"
Carlisle (finally): "Have you ever seen the show he's on, Shark Tank?
(Williams and Schwartz look at him blankly.)
Carlisle: "Well … "
Anyway, you're not gonna believe this, but Williams ended up re-signing with Brooklyn. Normally I'd have more barbs here … but I actually enjoy Shark Tank. I fully support Cuban's decision to throw away Dallas's 2012 title defense to create enough cap space to potentially sign a marquee free agent like Williams, then to miss THE crucial pitch meeting with Williams because he was contractually obligated to tape a reality-TV show. I care more about Shark Tank than the fate of the Mavericks. If I rooted for the Mavericks? I might not be as happy.--

You don't get to keep the exceptions if you use cap space. It's one or the other.
Personally, I have no interest in keeping Kidd at this point.

Kidd has little value to what's left of the roster. He has value to a contender, but he'd be about as useful as an NBA Championship Trophy on this team.
They're one move away from being in full-on rebuilding. Just a matter of time before the topic of amnestying Dirk is suggested. There. I did it.

A little off topic, but i really don't think Cuban will actually ever do a "proper" rebuild, just blowing up the whole roster, and suck for talent. He's just not that guy.

I agree. And that could be either really, really bad, or really, really good. (Think: Al Davis, Jerry Jones)

Kidd was one of the few players who showed up against OKC this year...
Kidd is far from done, his game doesn't hinge on fading athleticism...
If he signs with the Knicks, look out for them to become serious contenders in 2012-13... Stoudemire, Mello, Lin, Chandler, Kidd, that's a unit that can contend with Miami and OKC...

We're going to need to pull off some trades, but this team could be very good.
I just also think we need to start considering a time when Dirk is the elder statesman. I can't think of a better guy to lead that transfer of power to the next generation. I just hope we are able to get that next star before Dirk fades.
As long as we lower our standards again, continue to savor our championship but view this team as a rebuilding team. If we continue to compare this team to the championship team, we will inevitably be disappointed. If we view it as a rebuilding process, then it can be a very exciting time to be a Mavs fan.
I also think a full season will be a fun time to see the development of players.
