Official offseason 2013-2014 thread
I know we have a few more games ahead of us, but we've basically been eliminated from playoff contention.
1) What position do we need to address first and how?
2) Should we draft our pick or trade it?
3) Who should be re-signed?
4) Will we make the playoffs NEXT year?
5) Is it even worth spending the big bucks to put together an expensive team when the Heat dynasty is going to rule it for the next 4-6?

Get a C, i'm fine with Brand and/or Wright coming off the bench.
A PG is needed that CAN get the ball to Dirk...

1) A PG, by far. Someone who is able to give the ball to Dirk. Afterwards, a decent C.
2) Depends on which position we will be. IMO we can also go into tank mode now and try to get into a slightly better position in the draft.
3) Regardless if they have contract here for next year, these guys should stay: Dirk, Marion, Carter, Brand, Wright. O.J. seemed to have found his role in the last games, but yesterday was a stinker again. Same for Crowder. Concerning these two I'm undecided, but I'm leaning towards letting them go (O.J. has a player's option for next season though). The whole rest has to leave for sure.
4) If we get a good PG and a decent C, it is possible.
5) Well, then you could even ask if it's worth playing next season at all

Chauncey Billups
- yeah he is old, but a total free agent this summer
-but-
he knows and respects Rick C.
he can shoot and defend well
he knows how to pick and roll
I am so tired of seeing pg's screw up our game - and not get the ball to Dirk.
Don't want him as your point guard - fine - use him as a shooting guard. The offense will flow better with him than without him.

Rather see Jarrett Jack. Heck even Nate Robinson on the cheap. He's a Barea type that could find meaningful minutes here. I'm out on any mid 30's players, period. We have enough of those right now.

Agreed,
RC needs a "coach on the floor" at PG. Since RC's not going anywhere get him what he needs. If he's healthy he would be a good choice.

I'm out on Mayo for over 7 million a year. Brand can come back for a little over vet minimum. Wright has a place for a little over minimum too. Collison should not be back at any price. Guy doesn't even have a back up pg game.
When need a pg first priority. I don't see any out there worth paying big money for. CP of course but he's not leaving LA. If Dwight will sign here it's a no brainer you sign him. While I don't consider him a franchise piece he's the closest thing to it available and you take him regardless.

1. Without a doubt pg. The charade at that position has been a joke all season ending with Mike James starting.
2. Draft if the FO hires someone who can scout a little better. We can't afford anymore Cunninghams or Dojos.
3. Depends on who they get in FA.
4. see #4
5. Yes...any chance to get back into a good playoff position...you take it. Screw the Heat.

Sign Calderon and Pekovic, we have the cap to do it. Calderon can actually pass, something none of our points this year know how to do. Pekovic is a monster on the boards and just plays hard. Also, try to get Len in the draft, if not get Olynyk. I had a whole in-depth of what I think the roster next year should be and still be under cap, but it's on my other computer. I'll post it tomorrow

Also, get Nate Robinson for the bench, he's cheap and can play well in our system. If we can get O.J. to sign back for cheap then do it. I believe with the right point guard(Calderon) O.J. could really flourish.

Pretty much. I'd like to say I don't understand Erica's long-standing fascination with posting "offseason" threads well before the season is over, but I'm pretty sure I do. Coping. Mechanism.
Unfortunately, I doubt this premature offseason thread is going to end with a Mavs' championship like her last one did.

I just find myself not giving a flip about the NBA and the Mavericks and it scares me after being such a devoted fan for so long. I want something to care about and something to hope for. Right now I'm not sure if there is hope for the franchise.

Same here. I can't even remember the last time I actually checked to see what the score of a game was.

Billups has been injured all the time and that can continue next year. But yeah we need players who's basketball IQ is bigger than the guys we have now. Thats beacause RC can coach team like this better. Soo i would go in for CP3. But for that i hope they fail this year in the playoffs and clippers want some changes. In my opinion Del Negro is a awful coach and their so good because of the players and their IQ, leaderships and teamwork. So i hope that chris wants a team with a great coach and franchise with a great veteran player. So Dallas would be a great option. And Nowitzki + CP3.... oh i would destroy every team in 2k14 then
Also we don't need babies in our 3 second area, so kaman go somewere else. I'm hopping that wright will make a big step further in this summer. He has a big potential and he ain't that expensive.

1) PG. Sign Calderon. Fire Carlisle if SVG or Sloan is willing to take the job
2) Trade it. Weak draft.
3) No one.
4) Yes if the right moves are made
4) Yes. The Heat dynasty will last 2-3 more years until Wade is done.

Well Howard and CP3 are not leaving LA even if both the Lakers and Clippers get put out the first round, the Mavs REALLY need a PG and Jose Calderon wouldn't be bad and I would take a chance on Bynum.
I want this to happen but I expect more 1 year deals...

Calderon is a band-aid fix not really a solution. Remember Bynum in the 2011 playoffs, what he did to JJB? Yeah, fuck that guy. You don't want someone like that on your team.

I could care less about that if he brings 20-10 and defense to the center spot. Of course, he has to be healthy, so there's that.

This might have been mentioned by someone on here at sometime or other, but would it be best for the Mavs in the long run to trade Dirk to another team to get better? Has anyone else considered this?

Before even thinking of this it would need Dirk's nod. He has a no-trade-clause and can't be traded anywhere without his permission.

No. And if the Mavs forced out the dirkster they would have an even larger fan mutiny than they are having now.
Anyone know ratings for the last year? I know they must be sweating season ticket sales because we are getting the all out push.

Defense and bebounding. That's all I care to see back into the Mavs game plan.
That has to start at PG and C. Your obvious targets are Paul, Howard, and Bynum. Slim chance to none that we get either, Bynum being the most likely.
How can this team not land a Reggie Evans type player? Rebounding has been an issue as well with this team.
I don't care who it is, haven't looked too much into free agency, but for the love of god, put a better product on the court.

This is a huge offseason for the franchise.
I don't know if they can land a big fish this summer. I am very skeptical. I do think some things ought to be out there though, and I think Mark is going to have to do something to keep and rekindle fan interest. Like Erica, I find myself losing more and more interest in the team right now.
The team has to find a point guard. There are no ifs about it. They have to address this position, not only because it was the problem position, but because it ended up adversely affecting everything else.
This franchise looks like it is going to need Dirk to continue to be a stud for the next couple of years, and I don't think he can do it without a point guard to make his life easier. He isn't going to create off the dribble anymore the way that he used to, and he shouldn't have to. You have to get a facilitator. That players needs to be able to defend, as well, since the team had so much trouble with that this season. I am also a big believer in a point guard being able to go one-on-one and score when needed to. If I had to pick a position to get a star, this is the position I would want.
I think getting a point guard makes everything else work better too. A point guard helps Dirk, but he also helps a guy like OJ Mayo. I don't see Mayo as anything more than a third or fourth option, but I think he is a valuable player. If he comes back next season, a legit point guard could do wonders for him.
At this moment, I think Mayo will be back too. He seems to have responded to Rick, and I think his overall game has improved this season, even as his scoring has gone down.
Get a point guard and go from there though.

A sleeper pg who I like is Eric Maynor. 2013-2014 wiil be his second year after his injury. He is someone to watch for the rest of the year playing behind Lillard in Portland. He was really a good player in OKC but he was behind Westbrook.

If the answer is Eric Maynor, you're asking the wrong question.

I'd like the Mavs to target Corey Brewer this offseason. Just turned 27, really coming into his own recently, and already played an extremely crucial role in the Mavs winning a championship. Marion's probably gone after next season, Vince and Brewer can each play some at the 2 and the 3, and I have don't see much if any upside in Crowder long-term.

Sell low buy high.. Great, gave him away to get rid of a player, now we get to overpay for him.

Yeah. I'd be surprised if Cuban would own up and make this move.

He spoke fondly of him, but he also said that Brewer is doing well within the system Denver is playing in now.
