Default Plan B through Z

Okay, Longhorn has spoken... Dwight isn't coming here. Neither did Paul.

So put together a competitive team next year......

What to do w/ Marion?

I vote no on Gortat.

Calderon's not coming if we don't sign Dwight.

Signing Calderon and/or Jack is probably priority number 1. Neither are perfect but Calderon is a good shooter and a "safe" passer. He'd work well with Dirk. Jack isn't the passer Calderon is but he is more of a one on one player, and he is a better defender. Jack (IMO) lets you pair Larkin with him as well.

The Mavs also could possibly Calathes for some type of prospect as well as moving Marion.

I would have loved to have Lopez but he is gone. Gortat doesn't do much for me now that Kidd is gone. I guess you would have to roll the dice on Bynum.

Trade your superstar and tank is what almost every other team in the NBA would do. Can't see it happening here though.

Without a trade, if we resign Wright we have 4 slots to fill:

PG - X, Mekel, Larkin
SG - X, Akognon, Ledo
SF - Marion, Carter, Crowder
PF - Dirk, Wright, X
C - X, Brand, James

Seems strange simply to assume that we're going to get Brand...

Yeah - I factored him in given his 'strong interest' in returning. We'll see if the Mavs can bring him back.

Don't hate yourself, we already won it, and this is how the NBA works unfortunately. Being a treadmill team is the worst in this league.

Players i wouldn't touch under any circumstance: Josh Smith, Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings.

Players i'd rather not sign: Bynum, Calderon

Players i would want for the right price and/or trade for them: Igoudala, Pekovic, Gortat

I would be all for another rental year to be honest, i don't get the fascination with becoming a treadmill team if we miss out on Dwight. Next year's gonna be a great draft. Yeah, it would be a bummer for Dirk, but i don't think his wildest dreams are playing on an 8th seed, and getting embarrassed in the 1st round. We have no assets, let's get some through the draft if Howard doesn't come.

Sounds like a good coach could fix those issues.

As for him being undersized, he is 6'1, 169lbs. All he has to do is hit the weight room and pack on 10-15 pounds.

Haha. For a guy that size with that thin of a frame, you can't really achieve that type of weight gain over one offseason. That is something that would take a few years without the use of steroids. It would be a complete lifestyle change and it would no doubt affect his greatest strengths at this point, his agility, speed, endurance.

He doesn't have one single elite skill, mediocre/bad shooter, finishes terribly around the rim, can't draw fouls, and undersized. His passing is probably the only one good skill he possess. He probably wouldn't be that terrible playing next to Dirk, on a lesser role, but still, i wouldn't sign him unless he agrees to play for the full MLE.

He doesn't know the word efficiency and (based on what I've seen so far from him) he tends to be a ballhog in decisive moments. Not really what we need IMO.

As long as Dirk is on your roster you will always compete for that 8th spot. We are the treadmill team until we start surrounding him with real assets.

Yeah, well, he's 35, we won't be competing for the 8th seed with him until he's 40. I don't think he can put the team on his shoulders anymore, and he knows it. He said so many times in the last 2 years. That's why he's gonna be frustrated in the next couple days if things don't go our way. Also, you are not really a treadmill team unless you are locked into a mediocre situation. We could have 50 million in cap space next summer, to me, treadmill teams has long contracts, with mediocre, underachieving players.

A redux. Bracketed mean unsigned but the Mavs have expressed interest in retaining them. Doesn't account for Morrow. 6 spaces, down to 4 if Wright and Brand are back.

PG - X, Mekel, Larkin, Akognon
SG - X, X, Ledo
SF - Marion, Carter, Crowder
PF - Dirk, [Wright]
C - X, [Brand], James

p.s., it's "nowhere" not "now here" - but I considered the latter!

Ignoring trade possibilities, including those that might develop out of Dwight picking Houston or GS:

Step 1 - Go long on Jennings. Take your best case for the player you think you can mold him into in two years time, and offer to pay him as if he's already that player.

Step 2 - Sign Zaza and Delfino to be your new starting C and SG.

Step 3 - Re-sign Brandan Wright as the first big off the bench.

Step 4 - Fill out the roster with vet min guys as best you can. Brand, Morrow and Roddy all options if they're interested in a return.

Logic: Beyond the possibilities for Jennings as a player, two guys likely to be on the trade block next year are Rondo and Cousins. Dallas likes both, and Jennings is as close to the kind of player Boston/Sac would want in return for them as there is on the free agent market this year.

Why the negativity? Dwight is a Mav.

I don't really like Jennings, but if the option is no tank, that's ok, bring Jennings.

Jenning + Dirk + Pekovic

dreaming too high, at this point
