Heard Odom's contract could be bought out by the Mavs and he may be done (personal reasons). Hope it's not true. Love Odom.

So if he's bought out, does that 2.4 drop off the books next year?

I don't think so. I doubt very seriously that they would buy out him out. There are ways that they can get him off the books pretty easily in June if they want to.

I heard Odom has the power to travel through time with a magical pocketwatch. I don't know where you heard your tidbit but I heard mine from a reputable source.
Then again, I didn't make a thread about what I heard. Maybe I should.

I actually hope it isn't true since he still has opportunities to play well, but it just hasn't worked out so far...

I'm with you. I think there is something majorly up. I just question the source is all, since its a semi-reputable source talking about an anonymous source. We'll have to see.
I'd have preferred it in the Odom thread until it was official, but we all have different opinions, I guess.

So you posted that a Dwight trade was "imminent" this morning, without quoting a single source, and now you're blasting him for quoting someone on twitter that could very plausibly have some legitimate Laker connections?

He quoted a tweet by a video game designer wishing LO's family well and said he "heard" that Odom was being bought out. I mean I love the 2k series as much as anyone but I'll wait till I see it. I don't doubt that Odom is trouble. I won't be surprised if Odom is bought out. I just don't like a thread about Odom being gone because a video game designer heard from a guy (unnamed source( that Odom was gone.
As for me, In the Howard threat, I merely restated an article titled.....wait for it....
"Magic Deny Rumors Of Imminent Howard To Lakers Trade" found on the wire and on the Orlando Sentinel website. I meant to put some quotations around "imminent" but was at work at the time. Still I dont think its a terrible stretch seeing as its in the title of the article.
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap...o_Lakers_Trade
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sport...tory?track=rss
So yeah.
Seriously.

He quoted a well known Laker blogger. Maybe this guy knows what he's talking about, maybe he doesn't, but he's not some random fan, and calling Mavs777 out for posting it is silly and petty.
Also, to continue the thread:

Zach Lowe @ZachLowe_SI
As others have tweeted in last hour, rumblings all weekend in ORL that something fishy is up with Odom. No confirmation, though.

Doesn't get much more reputable than Zach Lowe, so I assume it's ok for me to post this.

OK, I'm "silly and petty". I'm OK with that.
P.S. My source was an article entitled "Magic Deny Rumors Of Imminent Howard To Lakers Trade"
Forgetting to post a source when its frontpage on RealGM....well I suppose that's a small sin.
Pretty hypocritical of you though to call me out on it for making a snide remark to 777 about a semi-reputable source.

Maybe instead of buying him out we can put him to work as a ball boy or something, so that way we can get some actual production out of him

Ha, now we've both quoted the other after editing our post. Round and round we go.
Let's just all agree that Odom is the biggest Mav failure since....I don't really know.

I suppose you could make cases for Tim Hardaway and Walker, but even they had a some good games. Hardaway had no knees, and Walker just loved to chuck it up...on any team. I guess you at least knew what you were getting with those two.
Nobody predicted Odom's demise would be like this.

yeah but Christie was a has-been by the time he got here. He was sold as the next coming but you really can't believe the hype of a 35-year-old with 250k miles on him.
Walker was coming off of an ECF showing and an allstar appearance.

Ugh. This is like trading our first for Rudy but kind of worse (assuming we just buy him out AND still are on the hook for 2.4M next year).
Hopefully we can use his contract in a positive way or atleast get out from the 2.4M.
Hopefully hopefully, he is good and will come back in 6th player of the year form.

Feb 27, 2012 - The Dallas Mavericks have announced that forward Lamar Odom has left the team for personal reasons, and ESPN Dallas is reporting that he's tending to his father, who is currently ill.
Sports Illustrated spoke with Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle, who confirmed that Odom likely won't be playing Tuesday night against the New Jersey Nets, the team's first game after the All-Star break.
"Lamar is not here today," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said Monday. "He is still dealing with a family matter and the hope is he'll join us soon, and we'll update you when there's an update."
SI's Zach Lowe tweeted Monday night that "something fishy" was going with Odom, saying that there were "rumblings" in Orlando during All-Star weekend. It's not worth speculating about that at this point, but something may break in the next few days.
Odom has struggled this year in Dallas after a brief but tumultuous offseason, and he's averaging just 7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds this year.

I hope the rumors of a buy out are not true, contrary to the garbage that many are speaking, we do need Lamar if we want to go all the way.... I hope Lamar is back very soon, there's still a chance he can get it together by playoff time... Odom's really not a bad guy from what I can tell, but he's definitely in a mental funk right now though... Don't be mistaken, Odom playing well is what would put us over the top...

No, it wouldn't. It would have been a nice lil addition to help our bench some, but were just not gonna see that.

Players that retire due to medical reasons get their salary removed from the teams cap (=Brandon Roy).
Wondering if its possible to let Odom retire due to psychological reasons, let it confirm by a psychologist and the Mavs are able to buy him out and remove his salary from the cap....

To clear that 2.4mill, an NBA-appointed MD would have to determine that he was medically unfit to play and unlikely to play again in the near future. I don't see that happening even under the best circumstances for a guy that is in better shape than 95% of Americans (and decent for an NBA player), even if he is emotionally unfit to compete hard.

Interesting. It would never happen. Would you want to play for a team that would do that to a player? Never happen, interesting though.
