Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
Free agent forward Troy Murphy has signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, league source tells Y! Sports.

Yeah, that one was left field. So who got waived/traded? Curry?

Not really sure why. I guess he will take all of Bernard James minutes. But he isn't better than Wright. He isn't better than Brand. And when Dirk gets back, he will be beyond useless. And who are they cutting to get him?

Troy was a strong rebounder earlier in his career (unclear whether he's still capable). That's the first thing that comes to mind.

He shot 42% from beyond the arc last season, 39% career...
Bye-bye Dojo? Curry?

I agree with both of what you said. He is a good rebounder and he can hit the 3. The problem though is he sucks at everything else and he plays the same position as Dirk. So the pairing of him and Dirk would be terrible.

You're talking about an end of the bench insurance signing, though, not a guy who's going to be looked to as a first or second teamer playing significant minutes with Dirk. Beyond that, I'm not sure I see non-center Murphy as a significantly worse fit next to Dirk than Curry for example, who might be a center but who can't block shots or defend the pick and roll, and who's always been a weak rebounder. And the fact that Murphy can play PF might be part of the reason they're interested. It's not like they're sitting on a surplus of bodies at that position.

Curry or Dojo gone?
My guess is Curry...he just cant defend anyone and with Kaman soon back and Wright playing strong we dont need him.
But btw: Murphy is done. He was terrible with the Lakers.

I forgot he played for the Lakers last season...I'm not willing to going as far to saying he's done because RC did bring Peja's career back to life when we all thought he was done.

James was absolutley terrible in the third quarter, a big reason why Utah made the huge push. Can't they just send Cunningham to D League?

Sending someone on your roster to the DLeague doesn't affect the roster at all.

If he can still rebound, I think this might be about freeing Brand up to play more center while Dirk is out. They HAVE to fix the rebounding problem, and playing Wright (as good as he's been) and Curry (ugg) at center is not helping thath situation. And Bernard James just isn't ready to play in the NBA, at this point.

I agree, and I sure don't see how it can hurt. He's better than Dominique Jones or Eddy Curry.

Mavs need to take care of the rebounding....last night game was the only one that I remember when I was surprised when the Mavs grab a defensive rebound.
The Jazz just park their bigs in the paint and crash the boards.
Murphy can rebound and at least he can take the opposite big away from the paint

Defensively... it is a wash between him and curry.
Murphy will probably be good as the pick and pop player.......

Couldn't hurt. Nice to have that depth.

Btw, maybe it wasn't "out in left field" as it would seem. Troy Murphy played for Jim O'Brein while in Indiana.

Not a bad idea to have a near 7-footer that can hit a jumper from 15-20 feet. He's nowhere near Dirk's level, but it'll be nice to have our guards ready to load Dirk up when he comes back.
And who knows? Maybe he'll be our next Van Horn or Peja. At the very least he's a decent placeholder.

I agree. This signing is all about having another shooter. The rebounding would be gravy.

Exactly - it can't hurt to have a big that can hit the three-ball while Dirk is sidelined... Or even spell him when he gets back.

Seems like the most obvious choice, given the amount of bigs we have on the roster...

Too bad it wasn't Dojo. Curry can at least play in a pinch. Dojo is 110% garbage time player.

As disappointing as DoJo is, I suspect he's still only a DC or Booby injury away from being elevated into the rotation, so I'm perfectly okay with the decision to waive a 4th string center to make room for a 3rd string PF.

True, but if Dojo ever gets any significant playing time, then I'd say this team is in serious peril.

He's definitely not a long-term solution. But I at least trust him to bring the ball up the court and be in approximately the right place at the right time on the offensive and defensive ends. And anyway, the Mavs are 1-1 right now without Dirk and Kaman, and I'm pretty sure adding the two of them to the lineup would do more to help the team than elevating DoJo to backup PG would do to hurt the team. It's not all that dire.

Unfortunately if he were a regular rotation member the paint would be so packed it would look like a can of sardines.

I thought there was some interesting raw potential to work with there when he first came into the league. It's the lack of development that's been disappointing to me.

Not sure why they don't give a young talent a chance? Hard to believe there isn't someone out there worthy of bringing up from the d league or off waiver wires.

Move to fast to add old depth. Antonio McDyess wants to return back to basketball. At least he rebounds, defends, and can play both positions.

I think we should trust our (ex.Pacers) coaching staff on this one.
