Mavs vs Kings game 6 (2:30 p.m. local time on Halloween)
Dallas will be looking to bounce back on Sunday as they return home to host the Sacramento Kings. The Kings dominated the Mavs last season.
From Mavsmoneyball
Good Luka needs to show up.
Perhaps the biggest reason for the Mavericks struggles so far is Luka’s uninspiring play. He looks like a ghost of the player we last saw eviscerating the Los Angeles Clippers in the postseason. He’s averaging almost 23 points per game, which is fine, and his seven assists per game is good enough. But as mentioned above, his 3-point shooting is abysmal, and he yet again looks like he’s playing himself into shape to start the season. The clearest evidence of this is his shockingly low free throw attempts. Doncic is averaging only four trips to the line per game this season. His career average is seven. If the Mavericks are going to get things turned around on offense, Doncic is going to have to be more aggressive.

We have no reason to think that Luka is ever going to take off season conditioning seriously. There is always an excuse and I am one of the biggest Luka apologists on this board. The Olympics, not knowing when the season is going to start yadi yadi yada... He could use 2 days a week on non game days of intermittent fasting. Basically skip 2 days a week of food and he will get into playing shape in a matter of 2 or 3 weeks. He eats too much, plain and simple. He is 20 lbs too heavy.

again, again annnnddd again.
Looking for a much better start to the game instead of always climbing out of a hole.
Wonder what our all-time record is for day games? I'm thinking it's below .400

I will say that there is no reason to hate on KP as he can't help getting hurt. This is 100% on the FO for trading for him, paying him, and then not having any backup plan whatsoever if he gets hurt.
Let's get a win.

So just to put a bow on it and move on until after the game:
- we knew with 100% certainty by the end of the 2018-19 season that we had a generational talent
- We proceed to wait for Danny Green in 2019 FA period and miss on meaningful additions to the team
- We have 3 top 36 picks on what appears to be a very bottom heavy draft with lots of very serviceable players picked after the 17th pick. One player in our own backyard is already averaging 18 points per game and another that went right after our pick set the rookie record for 3 point shots made. Yet another that went way after our first pick played very good meaningful minutes in the playoffs. Our 17th pick (probably our highest draft pick for the next few years) is still learning to dribble with both hands and frequently gets brownie perception points for hustling and running hard.
- We suck at team building
- Luka is in his 4th year already. Do we really think this team is going to become a top 4 team from within?

Luka needs to come to the stage today.
Get Maxi in for DP.
What more do they need to see from Omoruyi before he gets rotation mins? He's better than DFS and probably Bullock rn.

I know it's early, but if we drop this game I would be comfortable calling this season a wash. It's early, but we are all aware of the serious talent deficiencies of this roster. Tanking might be the only solution.

Ironically, Harrison Barnes would be great with this squad. He should be our starting 4, not our useless "superstar" Porzingis.

I think at this point of Luka's career it's about time we accept the fact that he is never going to be a good/consistent FT shooter

Will take a win anyway we can get it. Shoutout to the Kings on their 3s.
So glad they picked up Frank. He’s fitting in quickly.

Yep Frank has been solid.
It's still early but I felt like when they signed him it was going to be a very underrated pickup.
I more excited about him than Bullock or Brown.
I think defensively he fits next to either Luka or Brunson

Win puts us at 4 seed. Only Jazz, and Warriors have a better record. Tied with Nugs for third-best record.

A Game Note about Frank
Ntilikina played his typical pesky defense, staying locked on the Kings’ guards, fighting over screens and contesting shots. But he also moved the ball on offense and shot well from deep, finishing 2-of-2 on 3-pointers, with 12 points and two assists off the bench. If the Mavericks can get that type of production from him consistently this season, it’ll be a huge positive. Dallas tried desperately to find someone to contribute off the bench in such a manner last season, and failed over and over again. Ntilikina playing this way, on a minimum contract, would be one of the biggest steals of the offseason.

Frank was more than solid today. Don't win the game without him. Mavs found the perfect role for him, and he has so far been better than Bullock or Brown.
Went to the game...some observations...
-Powell still sucks, but at least he scored some points. I have no clue what they are doing at times with him in the lineup on offense. Two times late in the game Luka is giving him the ball at the top of the key like he'll do something. I guess that could be a coaching thing or a Luka thing or I dunno, but never do it again.
-Defense is the best I've seen since 2011. I'm glad they are staying committed to playing it versus panicking and going away from it. It's team-wide, and everyone is contributing...well besides you know who.
-Brown and Bullock have no clear roles and thus their games are suffering. Too many of the same type of player on the team.
-Luka making some really lazy plays on offense. Looked gassed in the second half. Still one of his better games though. Something just seems a bit off. Not sure what it is.
-DFS still does glue guy things that makes his value climb a bit.
-Moses Brown is another clear definition on how not to develop a young player. They literally put him in near the end of the third not playing a single minute til then. He was cold and picked up two fouls. Give the kid a real chance please.

Would love to see Frank continue to grow into the DeShawn Stevenson role on this team.
If he can become consistent on 3s he could become a great backcourt mate with Luka.

Kidd sucks. We had a lead in the beginning and let them come back because of him. He made Luka turn the ball over the same exact way 3 times on lazy ass passes when our center is wider open for dunks. Bullock and DFS can't shoot because of that wife beater and he makes Maxi try too hard which caused his back to hurt. He canceled Halloween and made the whole team go shoot free throws for an hour after the game. If we had a good coach we would be undefeated and score more points.

I know, and keeping Sacramento to 39 percent shooting and 19% from three is so not part of the modern NBA. He needs to get with the times.
These afternoon games are ones Rick was famous for losing. Nice to eek one out against a team that has started hot on the road.

We desperately need to beat the Kings regardless of anything. Those bastards had it comin.
I really wanted to see EO. But anyway we need every win we can get no matter how it looks. We build through the season and iron the kinks out along the way.

I was busy today and missed the game other than a few ESPN Gamecast updates - How did our 17th pick in the 2020 draft do today?

DNP. But perhaps we shouldn't feel too bad as the guy selected before Luka was also a DNP.

Can't remember having the 17th pick in the 2020 draft but I could be wrong, and there's really no way to prove it. Either way, I'm sure Kidd screwed that up too.

-Nice to get the W with DFS, Bull, and Brown going 3 of 15 from 3.
-Ntlikina is good. Man did the Knicks misuse by trying to make him an on-ball player. He is so much better off the ball and as a catch-and-shoot guy or off the bounce when the defense is rotating. He probably can't sustain his early shooting numbers, but he's still one of the most consistent, high-energy, slippery defenders I've ever seen. He reminds me of Matisse Thybulle. He should get even more burn moving forward.
-If Brown isn't hitting threes we might as well try Green.
-The game started much better. Of course it's easy to look good when you're hitting shots, but the Mavs also defended a lot better (fighting through screens especially) and moved the ball a lot better on offense. All in all you can't complain about the effort today.

Maybe NY did misuse him but some of it is him growing and developing. Whether he's with Luka or JB he fits in nicely. He moves the ball well and makes good decisions. If his perimeter shooting percentage is expected to drop some, which sounds logical, I think we could also expect him to make more of the close shots. He has missed some slightly contested layups that to get to the next level he should be making. Finishing in the paint and a cpl more attacks off the dribble is what I'm hoping comes next.

We can at the....LEGENDS! He needs to be playing, so send him there perhaps. He isn't cracking this rotation and Omo provides way more than he does already as an undrafted guy.
