Texas vs. Duke, Meadowlands, Saturday: This remains the most anticipated nonconference game of the season. The 1 vs. 2 matchup hasn't happened too often and getting it on a neutral court makes it even better (although the Blue Devils will have the crowd advantage). This should be a Final Four preview with the nation's top point guard (Daniel Gibson), shooting guard (J.J. Redick), center (LaMarcus Aldridge) and power forward (Shelden Williams) all in one game. The role players aren't too shabby, either."

I think Texas wins. This team just fits together so well. They have without question the best frouncourt in the country. Buckman is such a great compliment to Aldridge. Tucker is a poor mans charles barkley. If were looking for comparisons, buckman reminds me of Troy murphy btw. Gibson is awesome. Different kind of player than Tj was but he is at least almost as good. Should be a great game.

Okay...so maybe not. Thoroughly unimpressed today. I was actually rooting for UT today, too. I hate Duke more than anything. Damn.

I have just started watching at the half but these officials are ridiculous. I dont actually know who the hell JD lewis is or why he is guarding redick but the hand check call on him is terrible. The reason UT has so many Tos is that Duke is getting away with ALOT on the other end.

This is just sad though by both the officials and texas how the hell do you call a weak ass call to send Williams to the line and then let Mike Williams get tackled with no call. Then to call a reach in on texas is just terrible because on roughly 70% of the possessions in the second half duke has reached in. UT wouldnt be winning with fair officiating, the officiating has been worth about 10 pts but this is just sad.

This isnt real fair to UT either because Buckman means so much to this team and he prevents you from being able to double aldridge.

Curse of the black jerseys...
oh, and they forgot to guard that J.J. Reddick guy. He's kinda good.

The commentator just said it and from what I saw it was true, UT took tucker out of this game. Why play him on the perimeter? Make them guard him in the paint. This shows how nice it is to have an extremely physical 4 who can also step out and hit the 3. I like the black jerseys but you gotta stick with the burnt orange.

sometimes it just sprials out of control like it did today. they came out after the half tough to pull within 5 but then started playing sloppy when duke responded with their own 9-0 run. gibson didn't penetrate, and tucker stayed at the 3pt line - that's not Texas basketball. they're young though and it was their first big test. they'll be back.
reddick was just a bit lights out today.

Terrible game planning yes as was not having tucker post him up all game. I just thought I would try a little levity with a copy of the dirk qoutes plus it happens to be true. The thing about reddick is most guys defend to the 3 pt line and he already has nba range easily so he can shoot from way beyond that line. I love pj tucker, he is my favorite UT player but come on man when the guy has had 40 dont talk trash because he finally missed one.

Defensively, this isn't a typical Rick Barnes team...no way in hell Reddick goes for 40 with Royal Ivey on the floor.

This team has 3 stars 1 very very good player 1 average player and 1 future star. Absolutely nothing else. You are right about Ivey. Why did they go under screens on redick??? That is just dumb.

Torched again.
I saw them play Duke last weekend and couldn't figure out for the life of me what they were doing ranked #2.
Tennessee makes them look even worse.
Spring Football looks like the dominant winter sport in Austin once again.

...and ugly it was.
nice win for the horns. one they really needed to get their confidence up going into conference play. when they have everyone healthy, like they did today, they are a handful.
but....
that was, BY FAR, the worst u of m has played all year. terrible shooting, way too many turnovers, bad decisions, bad shot selection, pourous defense, especially after made baskets. ugh. considering that 8 of their top 9 players are freshman or sophs, i was worried that's how they'd play to start the season. they haven't, not until today. not even close. but they showed their youth today. hopefully that will get it out of their system. in reality, they only have a handful of semi-tough games left - tennessee, utep, and houston at home, uab on the road. maybe a game against a spunky winthrop they better not look past (lost by 2 at auburn and by 3 at alabama).
with all the defections, they should run conference usa fairly easily. as long as they don't play like they did today.
nice win, horns.

I thought UT weathered a pretty stout storm there from the Tigers. I've watched them(them being Memphis State) exactly twice now and although impressed with the athleticism.. I'm not with their FG% and especially with their FT%. I thought they were really lucky to pull it out against Gonzaga.
They looked about the same to me as against Gonzaga, only were even more physical.

It was an ugly game but Texas had a chance to fold when Memphis went up and the crowd was going crazy. At one point I wondered if they would cross half-court again.
PJ Tucker showed once again that he's the heart of this team.

dude, gotta disagree with you about your assessment of the tigers (btw, i love that you called them memphis state, i still catch myself doing that).
this was the 9th time i've seen them this year (and i don't live anywhere near memphis - man, i love directv) and, by far, this was their worst game. i thought they played very well against gonzaga, especially compared to today's game. a few stats...
fg% 49.2% vs zags 28.6% vs. horns
3pt% 32% vs zags 18.8% vs horns
to's 8 vs zags 22 vs horns
they held morrison scoreless for the last 9:00+ of the game, not unlike they did to redick in the duke game (scoreless in the 2nd half), which, btw, they should have won (it was OFFENSIVE GOALTENDING, DAMNIT!!!). the difference, as i saw it, was that instead of the 10 deep rotation wearing down the horns, as it did to the zags, the tigers seemed tired. 'zaga, purdue and texas in 6 days may do that to you. but that wasn't what decided it. the horns played more under control, smarter, down the stretch. experience decided the game. that, and the tigers playing like a freakin' naia team....

Hah...glad you like the Memphis State. I graduated from there in '82 and still can't think of them in any other way. I was a rabid Tiger BBALL fan with Larry Finch, Larry Kenon (sweetest turnaround jumper I've still ever seen). I still remember the Bill Walton massacre!!!! ARGGG...

mmpeanut, it wasn't exactly a thing of beauty for UT. It's important to beat a very good team even when you're not at your best. With Buckman having a miserable game and with Aldridge saddled with foul trouble, the Horns very easily could have lost the game. It's a two way street. Perhaps UT had just a little something to do with Memphis playing poorly. It's just a thought.

no doubt, murph. texas won the game, especially in the first 10 minutes and their more controlled play down the stretch. i give texas credit. it was a good win and texas' athleticism, especially on defense, really made it hard for memphis to get the offense rolling. but they had open looks and couldn't knock 'em down and couldn't seem to finish at the basket (or draw the fifth on aldridge until it was too late). like jay bilas said (does anyone think that he's as bad a color analyst as i do), texas should have been up 20+ after the first 10 minutes.

dude, your allegience dates mine just a touch. my first memories of memphis state were the hank mcdowell / otis jackson / dennis isbell teams of the late 70's. i've done quite a bit of reading about the 72-73 team, although i was too young to remember them.
sorry, enough tiger stuff. back to the 'horn love.

Oh sure. I can completely agree that Memphis wasn't at their best. Texas wasn't either. That's what makes it difficult to draw much from the game. But, Texas does have a history of uglying games up just a bit. It's frustrating because of all of their talent. I'd like to see a more aesthetically pleasing game, but you don't get that alot from a Rick Barnes team. But, you do get the wins.

All you can say is SCOREBOARD. UT came into their arena and even though the crowd was all hopped up on barbecue and beer withstood quite a rally. Obviously MSU got taken down a peg and UT gained back some mojo.
