Alito's Credibility Problem by Edward M. Kennedy
This has GOT to be from the Onion doesn't it???
Alito's Credibility Problem
By Edward M. Kennedy
Saturday, January 7, 2006; Page A17
Every Supreme Court nominee bears a heavy burden to demonstrate that he or she is committed to the constitutional principles that have been vital in advancing fairness, decency and equal opportunity in our society. As Judge Samuel Alito approaches his confirmation hearings next week, the more we learn about him, the more questions we have about the credibility of his assurances to us.

Kennedy has no business addressing anything that involves ethics.

Lest anyone forget...
Quote:
"Close to midnight on July 18, 1969, Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy ran his car off Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. He escaped from the submerged car and swam to safety, leaving behind Mary Jo Kopechne, who'd worked for his brother Robert and with whom Ted had had a sexual relationship. Kopechne died, after possibly spending several hours trying to free herself from the car. Kennedy told friends what had happened, and two of them accompanied him to the scene where they tried unsuccessfully to dive down to the car. Kennedy reportedly wanted to claim he'd never been in the car, and that Kopechne had been driving by herself." While Kennedy was figuring out how to save his political career and was failing to report the incident to police for 10 hours, Kopechne may have survived for a time in an air pocket in the submerged car. For letting her die and for lying and covering up, Kennedy got a two-month suspended sentence and a year's probation.

Ted Kennedy should be in jail, not talking about the credibility of a Supreme Court justice.

So you disagree with me? Or is it that you think he really is qualified to talk about ethics and credibility?

My post was merely to address dr's request for a "liberal response".
I don't see Ted Kennedy's past as a basis to negate his criticism of any nominee. Ted Kennedy has served his constituents for over 3 decades, they continue to re-elect him to one of the most prestigious positions in American politics, that of a US Senator. They certainly admire and respect him.
A past transgression does not preclude a person from speaking to ethics. IMO Ted Kennedy has experienced the best and worst of times through his life. I do want him to express his views, and then one can decide if they agree or not. However, he shouldn't be dismissed with a casual "He may have been responsible for the death of Kopechne so he's worthless" comment.

The fact that Kennedy continues to be re-elected is befuddling and speaks to the stupidity and/or corruption of the people in that state, but it doesn't mean the guy has any right to talk about ethics or credibility.
I suppose you'd take what O.J. Simpson had to say on credibility at face value, too.

I love it when liberals try to defend the undefendable. It really cracks me up.

Perhaps it is "befuddling" due to the prism which you are looking through. Mass. is THE most educated state in the country, so it sure as heck isn't "stupidity".
Has there been any accusation of Ted Kennedy being corrupt? of Ted Kennedy selling his vote? of Ted Kennedy supporting a person or position for his own self interest?
Those are questions of ethics, which it appears Ted Kennedy has continued to provide the correct answers.
According to your logic, George Bush is precluded from making any comments about out servicemen, about the troops in battle, because he chose not go to war himself. That is not the case, he is capable of voicing his views. So is Ted Kennedy.

I think the fact that they continue to re-elect him proves several things, one of which is that book smarts don't necessarily reflect that a person has any common sense.

I didn't say that Kennedy was corrupt. I said that an electorate that would continue to re-elect a killer is corrupt. They obviously are more concerned about the political favors he can earn for their state than what he is and represents.

Bush might be precluded if he had been dishonorably discharged, I suppose. Such was not the case.
Kennedy is a killer who is free only because of the political influence of his family. Period.

You can get every degree in the world and still be stupid. You wouldn't be uneducated, but you could certainly still be stupid.

From bestoftheweb
What do the senior senator from Massachusetts and quadruple murderer Stanley "Tookie" Williams have in common? The Associated Press provides one answer:
Meet the latest children's author, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and his Portuguese Water Dog, Splash, his co-protagonist in "My Senator and Me: A Dogs-Eye View of Washington, D.C."
Scholastic Inc. will release the book in May.
So Ted Kennedy has a dog named Splash? How witty.
Mary Jo Kopechne's children could not be reached for comment.
