Deshawn Stevenson Appreciation Thread
How do we not have one of these? As Mark Followill has been saying, he is the unsung hero of the Mavs this season. Show your appreciation guys!

I thought it was because we didn't want to Jinx him by doing this? What he has done is really surprising and awesome. I wish he would get even more minutes.

He hit 3 out of 4 three-pointers with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and some solid defense in just 16 minutes tonight....

I wish he'd get a few more minutes. He's playing too well not to. The guy does nothing but splash threes and play great D. He's even hitting the occasional post-up and off the dribble 2.

I don't really see any good reason why he shouldn't be getting around 25 minutes right now, especially with Roddy continuing to sit on the sidelines. Really good D combined with efficient scoring is a nice combination to have out there, and I think it's played a pretty important part in our hot starts. Maybe this gravy train ends some time, but you might as well ride it out.

Yep. I see no reason for JJB to be playing 20 MPG while DeShawn only gets 14.

he's earned a few more minutes. what more does he have to do? similar to the Roddy situation last season, though infinitely less egregious.

A just and overdue acknowledgment of what Stevenson's been bringing to the team. How long has Dallas been looking for a good-sized defense-first starting SG who can make teams pay for leaving him open on the three point line? I didn't even consider DSteve to be an option at the start of the season after the way his game had fallen off, but he's been a huge positive, and just keeps coming through. Props.

Oh c'mon Chum, we've needed a player like this forever. If not the entire Dirk era, then at the very least since Michael Finley's last season here. Think about all the scrubs we've had at that position in the last 5 years. (Seriously, think about it.) Doug Christie, Adrian Griffin, Greg Buckner, Eddie Jones, Mo Ager, Gerald Green, Antoine Wright, Trenton Hassell, Quinton Ross... Not ONE of these guys could hit an open jumpshot, and except for maybe Ross none of them were anything special defensively either. Just one spare after another at that position, and last year I would've put Stevenson on the same list.
I would've killed to have him on this team in 2006-2007. He's been what I hoped Doug Christie and Eddie Jones would be. A guy who defend the other team's best wingman and hit an open 3. Basically, a guy who can be for us what Bowen was to the Spurs.

I feel you. The question was "How long have the Mavs been looking for this guy?" Hence my answer: Not very long (as evidenced by the slew of mediocrity you threw out there...not sure what they were looking for, but it wasn't this).
I love him. I want him to continue starting, even if Roddy comes back. He balances the team quite well.

I agree, now. Last year I understand not playing him a *ton* because he was only really used as a defensive stopper and kind of a liability on offense but he is HOT this year.

Big props...I've been wanting a bowen type on this team for a long time. It's been GREAT. We've had some guys in adrian griffin who had a good mid-range, but a dead-eye 3point shooter that plays D. Priceless!!

In his younger days, he used to create a lot of offense for himself of the dribble. I like that he's not forcing anything, but I still would like to see him create something off the dribble every now and then. Take a play like this for instance : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO815gf252g
Don't get me wrong, I love what he's doing now. But I feel like he can be even better.

I dont know, he had major back issues. We should be glad that he is able to play solid quick D and hit the shots.
I dont expect him anymore to do things like in the Video

Threevenston is the man, I love the toughness and defense he brings to this team. I like what he's doing on offense, he's not forcing anything and just knocking down the J when it's there for him. However, I feel like "Appreciation" threads often turn into jinx threads for some reason...

He can be better but he could be worse trying to do something that he's not quite capable off. Look at his shot, it's slow as molasses...he needs to be pretty wide open to get it off.
Take what he does and keep doing it. He's doing just fine and he seems to understand his role, which is great.

Good point. I guess he realizes that he's not as explosive as before, so he sticks to shooting and playing defense. Props to him for knowing his role.

I saw this thread and thought he had been traded.
The reason we don't have an "appreciation" thread for him is because he's still on the team.
ugh.

He's a great mesh with the starting unit, not just from a personnel standpoint but a chemistry standpoint as well. I think Chandler/Butler/Stevenson add fire to our starting unit and give us some attitude. The way we start games is incredible. I don't know if it's because teams don't see the zone coming or forget to guard the likes of Chandler, Kidd and Stevenson and so they get easy open buckets or what but our swag in the first quarter is the nuts.

Props........him and Chandler make a very good pairing with the starting lineup.
DSteve definitely is a puzzle piece that fits.

11 points in 16 minutes
4-5 from the field

Bump-ish.. This guy deserves to be on the front page in my book So I'll throw this back out from about 11 months ago.
It's kinda funny how things turn out. This article was Killing Deshawn stevenson and kinda praising Haywood when the move was made.
" DeShawn Stevenson is terrible, and though the Mavericks are badly lacking in depth, coach Rick Carlisle would be well served to pass on handing this guy minutes, especially if he continues to chuck at his current rate. Just because you've heard of him, it doesn't make him any good."

With Butler out for what will probably be the rest of the season, why Stevenson should get plenty of playing time. How does Roddy at the 2 and Stevenson at the 3 sound to you guys?

I remember thinking before the season, DeShawn Stevenson is really going to make four million dollars? FOUR MILLION DOLLARS?
He's still not earning it (because no own *earns* four million dollars a year), but damn if he hasn't been the most pleasant surprise of the year.

It's going to be extremely interesting how Carlisle decides to alter the rotation if/when Beaubois comes back.
My assumption up until this week was that he would start by simply giving Stevenson's minutes to the kid. Stevenson's regular rotation role - starting the 1st and 3rd quarters, playing 7-8 minutes of each and then never returning - is pretty much the EXACT role in which Beaubois flourished last season while Terry was injured. It seemed logical early on that Carlisle had decided moving Terry to the second team and carving out a "place holder" for Beaubois' spot in the rotation was a good move. He'd simply replace Stevenson with Beaubois at the appropriate time, and that plan would allow Kidd, Terry and Barea to all settle into the roles he envision for them immediately.
I don't think Carlisle had any idea, however, that Stevenson would be THIS effective. I think we can attribute the coach's recent attitude about Beaubois related questions to a genuine uncertainty of how the rotation should play out. I mean, there's probably lots of pressure to get Beaubois involved this year (from the VERY top) and think about it: He can't have Kidd's role, Terry is one of the "team leaders" and totally replacing Barea with a guy who clearly isn't ready to play backup PG isn't really a possibility, either. I think it's safe to say that Stevenson's strong level of play had given Carlisle a problem - a GOOD problem, but a problem.
Obviously, that's all up in the air now because of the injury to Caron. I actually think the combination of Marion and Stevenson is still a major plus for the team at the 3, but that creates a need at the backup 4 that I hope will not translate to an over-exposure of Cardinal. Further, while the flexibility of some guys will make it easy to get the "top 9" into a Caron-less rotation, none of the players currently on the roster seem to be able to provide Caron-like scoring, underwhelming as it was.
This is going to be fascinating.

You maybe onto something Stevenson can slide up to the 3 when Roddy's back. Leave Marion in the backup 3-4 role, knowing that he would take on a few more 3 mintes, with Stevenson also increasing his playing time. Roddy will get some of Caron's shots.
