Is everyone planning to suit up tonight as far as we know? The NBA wasn’t gone for long, but I’m glad it’s back!

WCS looked really active and Boban is still an offensive beast.

well I was going to start a new thread for Nate Hinton but apparently i don't have privileges...
That being said, i only caught the last 1.5 quarters but Hinton looks like a baller. Can see him getting a real shot at some playing time at some point.

Green didn't shoot well, but I was surprised at how aggressive he was. He had a nice assist too.

I really can't see why WCS isn't starting if we're serious about being a defensive team.

Powell looked bad. It will take time for him to get back to game speed but even allowing for that he looked like he had zero lift or lateral quickness. I’d rather see him off the bench for 10-15 per game until he is further along. Our defense will struggle with him starting at the 5.

player observations
Luka - he's still Luka. Another injury, though? Dude can't seem to buy a single healthy game.
Richardson - Defended well. Hit corner threes. Could be another starting piece for us.
Johnson - know how to play. Seems like an excellent teammate. Underrated passing
Brunson - looked like a solid veteran. I love that he's back. Has good chemistry with the second unit
Maxi - defended well. Was raining threes tonight
Powell - Didn't look slow. Seemed just as active as ever, but he's still not effective defensively.
Burke - Really good and picked up where he left off in the bubble/playoffs. Dude can score.
Boban - worst feet in the game, but man he can just rebound and score. Softest hands in the league.
WCS - good defense. Had some offensive flashes. 0-1 on threes and a travel
Terry - Did hit a three, but seemed nervous and not super effective. Not a primary ballhandler
Green - he's an excellent athlete and didn't seem scared.
Iwundu - not much offense (although played with 3rd/4th stringers). Defends like Marion.
Bey - looked good
Hinton - dude reminds me of Howard-- he's just so active and always ends up where the ball is. 8-8-4 in only 15min
Gillespie - looked slow and not super skilled
Lee- I thought he'd get major play to showcase him, but apparently he needs to still get cleared
KP - DNP for the next couple of weeks

Luka isn't in shape which is why he keeps getting hurt. If he wants to be a top 5 player and stay there, then he will eventually need to address coming into camp in shape. I give him a covid pass this time.

Fell asleep near halftime.
How was WCS? Was disappointed to not see him starting. Powell is such a defensive liability it’s not fun seeing the same stuff year after year when they stressed defensive minded this offseason.
What I saw was pretty sloppy but it’s preseason and guys haven’t had enough time. Lot of road games to start the season too.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's the first preseason game, and Rick doesn't get his lineup set until like the 2 quarter of the regular season...and he makes changes after that, still.

I think it's also just the way he plays. The dude absorbs a LOT of contact on his drives.

If we're going with Luka/Richardson/THJ/DFS, I think you need WCS starting until Kristaps comes back.

I could only watch the highlights of the game, so those can obviously be misleading, but am I missing something about Luka's conditioning? From what I can see, Luka looks exactly the same as he did in the bubble.

Luka in the bubble was probably in the best shape I've seen him since he's been in Dallas. Last night he looked really heavy in the midsection. He looked similar to his debut game against the Beijing Ducks.

Between Hinton, Bey, Green, and Terry we might be looking at the best draft class we’ve ever had following a playoff berth.

Really? He looked 10 pounds heavier in the bubble.
I think maybe he'll just always be stocky. Maybe we can get Jokic and they can just be two chubs together.

To me Luka looked stockier than usual and a step slow. I know he’s naturally a bigger guy, but if he wants to maximize his talents he needs to spend his off seasons working the way Hardaway does. He’s also extremely young and the game can has come easy to him since he was 13... hopefully he’ll get there in the next few years.

This is exactly how I felt. I know he wasn’t going 100% so that explains some of the “step slow”, but still. He seemed sluggish.

Yeah he definitely came back heavier, looks fatter in the face. His early training camp photos he looked like the Pillsbury doughboy. Give him a few weeks though and he’ll be back in shape.

Luka is just a big boy, I don't think he will ever be a chiseled guy.
Nate Hinton had a ridiculous performance.

Didn't get to watch him play last night but I must say I was entertained by watching the hustle aspect of his game in this video.

This kid has a nose for the ball and is all over the court.
If Powell's opportunities come from hustle, Rick will quickly fall in love with this kid.

He has a nose for the ball for sure. Some peoples intuition is just really good but he also has plenty of offense and a lot of confidence. If he is actually this player then Jesus, he could climb up the rotation. I didnt expect to see that.

Yeah, I've been high on Terry but Hinton looks like he could very well be a keeper and earn some serious PT. Man that motor is something else and I can't believe he didn't get drafted by someone.
Good size, decent ball handler and shooter, hustles, aggressive as hell, great rebounder, confident, athletic, great nose for the ball and seems to play with an overwhelming amount of passion should make his ceiling pretty high.
Only concern could be that he might play out of control at times like Devin Harris did early on in his career and that style of play could get him injured.
But imagine having that juice come off the bench if he develops quickly.

I don't love Brunson, but last night wasn't a game that I thought he stood out negatively. He had a few good drives and played OK to fairly decent. He for sure Didnt hurt us.

I don't mind Luka looking stocky or not having ripped abs. That isn't the issue. Issue is stamina and quickness in a guy who is already not quick. And remember we're talking about a top 5 player now. With great power comes great responsibility. (I had to)

So a site that I would visit for replays of games is now down and was up as recently as yesterday morning. I wonder if this site and that one both got taken down around the same time? If so, what happened exactly? This one is back up at least. That one... is not.

Josh Green looked great on defense on ball and help-wise. He needs to learn to navigate screens, obviously— he ducked under one giving Middleton an open 3– but I love that he got to guard Middleton for a spell. He has nice footwork and is solid in his positioning. I don’t think he’ll get pushed around. He had a couple bad finishes at the rim but some of that is just experience and nerves. He had a couple nice dive cuts for layups too. Nice to see him get extended run with the second unit.
Bey had a nice Marionesque runner. Hinton looked great. He’s just a baller.
Terry needs time. It was fun watching these guys for the first time with our Mavs! Nice looking and varied rookie class.

I don’t want to be that guy because I really enjoyed the game last night, but man Brunson continues to pound the air out of the rock. It’s like he isn’t crisp in his processing and is a couple beats behind. It got a little better as the game wore on but interested to see if it’s something he can improve upon.

He has been doing that since he was drafted and it's annoying. Mavs stans keep saying "He's a winner". People actually thought he was better than Curry. It's delusional. The team got better when he was injured because he wasn't there to be a black hole on offense. He only passes it when he can't get his own shot and does so at the end of the shot clock to force an assist.

He's always played that way.
He gets a lot of love on here for some reason but I've noticed this since his rookie season that he pounds the rock way too much.
I actually think he's better off the ball as a catch and shoot player.
It looks like they are going to play him next to Burke a lot and if that's the case I'd rather Burke be the primary ball handler in that backcourt setup.

I don't get this criticism at all. I know I may be the only Brunson defender on DM.com, but the dude was solid as heck Saturday.
He had the best +/- on the Mavs (+16). He had really crisp playmaking. He scored efficiently. While I watched, I honestly didn't see any evidence for any of those things you're accusing Brunson of, and then looking back over the stat line, I don't see it either. I have no idea where you or any other poster here get your ideas about Brunson.
Honestly, you can't ask much more from a second-stringer and I don't get the hate.

Oh, it’s not hate. I think Brunson is a nice backup with upside to be more than that. I like some of what he brings, especially on his current contract. I just think he’s a beat slow in his decision making and pounds the ball a little too much at times. The ball sticks with him. JJB was the same way but was a near elite creator/finisher.
I think it’s something that’s totally correctable and it’s something he either self-corrected some or was coached on mid-game last night. I said it with the caveat that it’s preseason and an overreaction, but it is something about his game worth keeping an eye on IMO.
