Could someone with greater cap knowledge lay out the Mavs current condition? Would really appreciate.
Still confused about certain things: are we under the luxury tax threshold for this season? when does that clock start ticking? if so, by how much? for instance say J.R> Smith(just an example)comes back in March- how much do we have to spend?
Trying to get a better feel for some of the FO decision making these last weeks
and what it means going forward...

BG ... with the 14 man roster and the Mavs waiving both of the nonguaranteed contracts ... Do the Mavs already have someone in mind they plan on filling the spot with or they did just not like either of the benchwarmer guards?

Lakers now likeliest destination for sure. But we started the day with decent odds that Howard and Deron could team up in New Jersey and now the odds are very high that at least one of them will be available next year.
Stein says still a chance for Nets to get Howard, only have to get more teams involved. But I don't see it. They have no trade chips without Lopez.

At this stage if New Jersey has a chance to trade for him then so do the Mavs.

Suns waive Mickael Pietrus. Won't mind adding a third Frenchy (he uncovered Roddy in Guadeloupe btw.) if his knee is right.
He gave up right about the minimum salary in the buyout agreement, so I guess he'd be willing to play for that amount this season, therefore losing no money.

Would love to add him. Great defender, nice spot up shooter, and athletic. Hope the Mavs are all over this.

I wouldn't be mad if the Mavs went after him...he could turn out to be another Peja type of move.

Carlisle was asked today what the next move would be. He said nothing was imminent. He did say that if something that was essentially a perfect fit came their way, then they'd step up but they don't see that happening in the immediate future.
Both the PGs will likely stay in Frisco for the short term. Those guys just weren't going to get minutes here unless an injury happened. Those guys were basically 4th or 5th string PGs in this mix.

Pietrus would be an okay addition, but I'd much rather go after another center.

Damn, why did the Suns waive Pietrus? I'd love him here! Dude is a legit SF with SF size, rebounds well, defends well, and hits the corner three.

That's why they picked up Sean Williams. Between Ian, Williams, Wright, Dirk, and Odom, I think the backup C position is donezo. Granted, those guys are all a bit undersized for the 5, but it is what it is.

He has had some injury issues with his knee I believe, also there was a lot of questions about his effort this past year, it sounds like he forced his way out though and Phoenix was happy to help. He really is similar to vince in how they play right now, so I don't see the need, he really isn't a good enough rebounder to play the 3.

It's evident most of you guys don't watch teams outside of the Mavs. Pietrus > Carter? Pietrus is decent defensively but he has ZERO ballhandling ability, meaning he rarely drives because he CAN'T do it. In Orlando he took crazy 3s. Literally CRAZY 3s. It drove Stan Van Gundy insane. Sure, he hit them, but he also missed a lot of them. Defensively he was great 2 years ago on Orlando but has clearly lost a step or three because of his chronic knee injury. I would take him, but only as a double back up.

Pietrus is not even remotely similar to Carter. Carter is a pick and roll ballhandler, post up SG and shot creator. Pietrus is a spot up shooter and former defensive specialist. That's like saying Stevenson is the same player as Carter.

Didn't we roll with 14 on our roster for a good chunk of last season?
I can see the wisdom in doing that again - you never know when a Peja or Brewer is going to fall in your lap, best not to have to cut anyone...

I should have meant when it comes to their position, both don't really rebound good enough to play the 3 effectivly, and both play a lot on the perimeter now.

I really don't know who will be the best option between Sean Williams, Brandon Wright, and Mahimni on the surface if forced to pick I would probably go with Williams. Hopefully someone steps up.

Tweeted it today that Williams stayed late and worked on his face-up game with Carlisle and Brad Davis. They went with that and a lot of pick and pop drills. From what I remember, that really doesn't work with his game. To his credit, he did rather well with it (I had low expectations).
I think Mahinmi is the frontrunner right now, but someone could catch him later down the road. If Wright stays healthy, I'd give him the inside track.

Pietrus gives inconsistent effort and he has bad shot selection especially from long range. Don't want. They fucking hated him in Orlando for this.

Except that Randle is most likely going to stay with the Mavs down in the D-League. Which small-ish Puetro Rican point guard does that remind you of?
Bear in mind that I don't have strong feelings on Randle either way.

Similar. It seems as if both impressed the front office and scouts, but neither had NBA-ready skills. JJB did it much earlier in college, true, but does it really matter, as long as both impressed?

It's really not very similar. JJ was on the roster with a guaranteed deal when he played in the DLeague.
Randle is not on an NBA roster. The Mavs failed to offer him a guaranteed deal despite having a still-open roster spot.
The fact that he's going to play fro the local DLeague team really doesn't say anything at all about what the Mavs thing about him.
