So many great quotes here. They really point out just what Dirk was able to accomplish a few years ago against amazing competition when so many others haven't been able to do that. This is what being the man is all about.

I've stated this before but what Dirk accomplished in 2011 vaulted him to #2 on my alltime PF rankings. 2 HOF's and 1 perennial all-star who were all in their primes and Dirk overcame it.

Dirk Nowitzki: “I Will Finish My Career In Dallas”
Quote:
“I’ve always said that I wanted to finish my career in Dallas. I have now played 18 seasons and it would be great if I could make 20 seasons full. Whether my contract is one, two or three years, the details are not yet fully negotiated, but we will be there definitely find a way, which is respectable for both sides I will finish definitely my career in Dallas.”

@bobbykaralla: Nowitzki need only play 53 gms this season to move from 12th to 7th on all-time GP list. He'll pass Kobe, Duncan, and title teammate J Kidd.
@bobbykaralla: Dirk could climb as high as 4th on that list within the next two seasons. He'd need to play all 82 both years to tie John Stockton for 3rd.

However, if he did spend it all, he'd be the type of guy you'd want spending it. it would be going to good causes. Maybe a Cowboys rehab inpatient center?

Part of Amare's letter in the Player Tribune:
Stoudemire: Can’t forget about the big fella, neither: Shaq. I idolized him growing up. And I got to play with him in Phoenix in ’08 and ’09. We did work, too. I was putting up insane numbers thanks to him and all the attention teams had to give him. Then there’s Dirk Nowitzki. The toughest player I ever had to guard. That one-legged fadeaway? There’s just no stopping it. Luckily when we were on the same team for a few months in 2015, I didn’t have to. I could play off him and just watch him work. – via The Players' Tribune

Beat me to it. That's very high praise coming from a guy who was himself once considered the most unguardable player in all of basketball.

Who is your favorite player right now? If it's Dirk who do you think your favorite player will be once he retires? For me it's Dirk, and I have no idea who my favorite player will become after his career is over. The idea of an NBA without him scares me. As long as he plays out his current contract we at least have him for 2 more seasons. That excites me. At this point I am just happy to have him around, reaching more career milestones. I don't necessarily care whether he gets another ring. I've come to accept that it is highly unlikely now.

I love when players show respect for one another. It's a shame that Kareem couldn't do the same. I always had a great deal of respect for him growing up, especially knowing that he went to school with my old man.

Which milestones will Dirk reach this season? Before he retires?
One that he made before last season ended was that he made his 7,000th free throw. I bet that mostly went unnoticed. During this contract he'll finally miss his 1,000th free throw! I think it's impressive that it'll take this long for him to miss 1,000 free throws when he's shot as many as he has. The past two seasons he has not missed more than 34 free throws. He has missed 963 over the course of his career.
Another milestone will be when he's played his 50,000th minute. With his minutes being limited that should occur during the 2017-18 season.
This season he could make his 9,000th 2 point field goal.
By the end of his contract he could very well grab his 1,500th offensive rebound. He may also eclipse 9,900 rebounds. I'd love for him to reach 10,000, but I think that is unlikely.
The category I am the most excited to follow is his points total. This season he could blow by 30,000 points and by the end of his contract Wilt Chamberlain will no longer be 5th in scoring. It'll be nice to see Dirk pass him before LeBron inevitably does the same.

Old Dirk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHdTYU-lGpw
man just checking out old vids of Dirk in his younger days - article from moneyball talking about KG retirement referenced this vid...
more spring in his step even just on his jumper - catch and shoot, pull ups off the dribble...
good rebounder, especially on the defensive glass
the ability to rebound the ball and bring it up the court and even taking it coast to coast
good memories...

Dirk Nowitzki’s wife gave birth to the couple’s third child on Friday
Quote:
DALLAS – Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is a father again.
Dirk’s wife, Jessica, gave birth to a son, Morris, on Friday. The couple also has a three-and-a-half year old daughter and a one-and-a-half year old son.
Morris Nowitzki came into the world weighing seven pounds and nine ounces and is 20-and-a-half inches long.
"Things went well, wife is doing good, baby is doing good, so that’s good news,’’ Nowitzki said after Saturday’s practice. "We’re at three now.
"It’s crazy how fast stuff has to go.’’
Nowitzki has missed the last three games because of a sore right Achilles. He also missed Friday’s practice for personal reasons -- so he could be on hand for the birth of his son.
"We’ve been busy this week,’’ Nowitzki said. "Every healthy child is a blessing in a way.
"We’re enjoying it, but hopefully I’m looking forward to getting out on the court soon.’’
Nowitzki doesn’t know yet if he’ll be healthy enough to play in Monday’s game in New York against the Knicks, or in Wednesday’s game in Boston against the Celtics.
As far as his third child is concerned, Nowitzki said: "He looks just like the other two. So it’s a blessing for sure.’’

The Russians brought DirkĀ“s brother, Oleg Nowitski, safely into space. Oleg and his teammates will replace three members of the International Space Station.

A dignified twilight, a la Tim Duncan, isn't likely for Dirk Nowitzki
Quote:
"Guys are learning to play in an environment that is very realistic, as opposed to the nirvana that he's provided here for close to two decades," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "The one thing that I think this period should point out to historians of the game is his level of greatness. It's just another strong indication of how great he has been [and] is and the kind of impact he has. When he's out there on a consistent basis, it's a game-changer."
