Not sure if this has been brought up, but I'm already in the process of debating.
On January 31st, which should I watch live and which should I DVR: Lost or Mavs/Celts?

it's a tougher decision than most people realize. if it was a normal episode (not a premiere), then it would be much easier.
However, 2 hours of DVR'ed Lost versus 2.5 hours of DVR'ed Mavs/Boston comes to wash IMHO
dang.

I will be taping the Mavs game, but that mainly comes down to the fact that my roommate and I make a habit of watching Lost and 24 together (in a completely heterosexual way...), and I generally watch Mavs games by myself.

I'm not sure what's worse. Waiting for commercials during a Mavs game or waiting for commercials during Lost.

Lost (or any show, for that matter). The three shows I watch (Lost, 24, and Heroes), I got into by watching DVDs, that obviously don't have commercials. Having to suffer through commercials is an excruciating process. Mavs games, I'm used to it.

I hate half time. And I always FF through free throws.

I will be recording both, but if I had to choose which one to record, I'd take the LOST episode and without a second thought....the only Mavs games I watch and rewatch are games where an individual player explodes (Dirk usually)...But every LOST episode is rewatchable episode...
do the right thing, get a better dvr/tivo between now and then

Wow. Good point. Mavs/Celtics....
It's not like I have a choice though, the HDTV will have LOST on it or my wife will be dragging my bloody body out to the curb and stuffing it in a trash can.

Both will be recorded. I imagine Lost will be watched on delay first, because that's what the wife will want.

Well I'll definitely be recording both at the same time on my DVR. It's just a matter of which one I watch live. This is a lame idea but maybe watch Lost will be live, and possibly PIP the Mavs game in the corner ;P
It'd kinda be a spoiler to the Mavs game though...

I will be watching the game. But that's because I don't have cable so I can't record it on a VCR tape at home while I watch Lost on the TV's at the Health Club.
I will be doing the reverse of that....

I was confused by the last episode when Jack was being tossed out of the hospital and he told the surgeon "go get my dad, if I'm drunker than he is then I'll leave". It made sense until you learned that this wasn't a flashback but a scene from the future.
Can somebody remind me how Jacks dad "died". And did Jack ever actually see him in a casket?

Jack was told he died of alcohol poisoning, and I believe we were shown him identifying the body in the morgue.
Most people assumed Jack was just out of his mind when he was asking for his dad. It was a vehicle to encourage people to believe it was a flashback before teh big twist.

FTW.
When there's a show I watch during a Mavs game, I usually watch the Mavs game because that's, well, actually live.

It was actually him saying that that led me to believe that something was wrong... the big deal with Jack's dad being drunk in the hospital was Christian's last act as a doctor, because he got his medical license taken away.

right, Jack did ID his body in the morgue. But he wasn't in the casket when he found it on the island.
as for the "go get my dad" thing, that was the one thing i did not like about that episode. it's easy after the fact to chalk it up as a drug effect, but i think it cheaply misled the audience.

Ummmm...don't know if I'd go quite that far but yea, it was pretty good. I'd heard a lot of hype about the Lost and the Heroes finales. I thought Lost lived up to it while Heroes didn't.
Still, the best Lost episode to date IMHO was The Man Behind the Curtain. The one that detailed how Ben got to the island in the first place.

Has anyone else noticed that the Mavs play at Boston on the evening of the 31st?
bummer of a conflict, and I love my dvr.

ok, so i'm too lazy and foolish to read 10 posts up where a discussion on the conflict between celts and lost has already occurred.

Thanks. I reckon I will start out watching the game and switch to Dr. Zoidberg's helpful links when Lost comes on.

You can't be serious about the 2 hours?
I'm assuming that one hour is some sort of gay re-cap show, and then the show itself?
Surely they're not going to blow 2 of their precious 8 hours in one night?

My understanding is that they only filmed 8 hours before the strike, and they're going to air 8 weeks in a row, and then an indefinite wait again for more.
The 8th episode (being half way through what they thought was going to be "season 4") is said to end with a hell of a cliff hanger.
