Dirk should take about 5-6 three pointers a game. And that is for two major reasons:

1) Besides Calderon is he is their best 3 point shooter. The Mavs need those shooters to space the floor. It used to be the Mavs had Terry/Peja/Stevenson/Kidd spacing the dloor allowing Dirk for mid range. Now it is necessary to have Dirk be the one to open up things for Ellis on the inside.

2) Catch and shoot opportunities. The 3 ball is probably the easiest catch and shoot opportunity besides screen and roll or curling off of down screens. The Mavs don't need Dirk to be running around off of screens a la Miller/Allen to get a catch and shoot. And the pick and roll can't be used every time.

And Dirk will not be a "specialist" unless he wants to be one. Just last night he passed up about 5 shots dumping it underneath to Blair and/or Dalembert for an inside shot. Specialists such as Novak/Peja/Korver/etc were never doing such things.
