If they want to maintain that cap space, they can't bring anything on the cap back, so the team they're trading to would have to have a trade exception large enough to accept the player and send nothing back (or they could engineer a three way trade).

I suspect, in the case of Blair, the Mavs would get almost nothing of any significance back, and would mainly be doing it to do Blair a solid in getting him some extra money.

Why wouldn't the Wizards sign Blair outright?
