A-Rod ties Banks with home run No. 277

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez hit his 277th career home run Wednesday night, tying Ernie Banks for second-most among shortstops.

Cal Ripken Jr. leads the list with 345.

Rodriguez, who has never homered while playing another position, matched Banks' shortstop total with a two-run shot in the second inning off New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina.

It was his major league-leading 36th of the season, putting him far ahead of his pace from last season, when he led the AL with 52 homers. It was his 12th homer in July, also tops in the majors.

In the same inning, Texas hit six doubles, tying an AL record done only once before, by the Washington Senators in 1934.

Combined with Rodriguez's homer, the Rangers' seven extra-base hits in the inning marked the seventh time that's happened since 1900. The Yankees were the last AL team to do it, in 1951.

And oh yeah...TEXAS BEAT NY 17-6!!!
