Default Official: JET named Sixth Man of the Year

Mavericks guard Jason Terry has been voted the NBA's sixth man of the year, a league source said Wednesday.

Terry, who averaged 19.6 points and came off of the bench in 63 of the 74 games he played, is expected to be honored at a Friday news conference.

Coach Rick Carlisle said on many occasions during the season that Terry's willingness to come off the bench was a key to the Mavericks reaching the 50-win plateau for the ninth consecutive season.

"Most players would want to start and would feel that not starting would probably not be in their best personal interests," Carlisle said in the season's final week. "The thing I respect and admire most about Jet is he's a team guy. He makes it about winning.

"If he didn't have an upbeat, positive feeling, it could have gone the other way."

Terry had been a starter virtually his whole career, but his scoring this season was just one-tenth off of his career best 19.7 points accomplished in his second season. His ability to come off the bench and heat up quickly was a terrific weapon for the Mavericks this season.

Terry said recently that this had been an enlightening season for him in many respects as he learned the subtleties of coming off the bench and providing an offensive spark.

"Coach Carlisle, what he's set up and how he caters to me when I come off the bench in terms of getting me involved right away, that's big," Terry said late in the season. "And Jason Kidd's alertness, obviously, being able to find me. It's a team award, for sure."

Well deserved. Congratulations JET.
