I've always liked Harrington even through the last few seasons when he got "discovered" and was overhyped beyond belief.
The problem is he's a 3/4 with decent but not great size or strength for the 4. Like Marion, he can be a bullish player at the 4, but its far from his natural position.
Assuming Harrington signs...well, unless we make another big trade, we have three starting-caliber players who all naturally play the 3 (Marion, Butler, Harrington)

Harrington is more of a 3/4 than a 4/5. He could probably play a little 5 if he had to, but now that we have 4 centers, I would imagine the FO thinks we're set there.

AL Harrington would fit nicely at the back up 4 and some time at the 3. I doubt he would sign for the MLE and for the minutes and role he might be restricted to here.

Well at least we cleared 2 roster spots. Add Harrington, creates space for a couple younger kids from the summer league team, hopefully Lin cracks it with us.

I wouldn't mind being on the other end of Chandler alley-oops. We know Chandler has good hands and can play in transition. For a back up, expiring center, this is really good. It's not what I wanted with the Dust chip, but I think we're probably going to push for a trade at this year's trade deadline.
We have Chandler and Stevenson expiring. I think JJB also has a year left. By the trade deadline, little salary will be owed to Terry and we may be able to trade him due to his partially guaranteed contract.

He's 6'9" and 250 lbs. Maybe he lacks some in strength, but he has the size to play the 4. And he's only going to be a backup, not the starter playing excessive amounts of minutes.

Well if Harrington accepts our offer, safe to say Dirk has plenty of front court help. Although our backcourt still remains the same, wonder if one more move is in order.
Actually considering Thomas probably won't be back, i'm guessing Harrington will play that similar role. So i guess we basically get back that shooter to back up Dirk.

Really!? Where'd you here that?
If that's true...talk about quickly accumulating some young talent. We've got Ajinca, Mahimni, Dojo, now possibly Augustine, and obviously Roddy.

Earlier Caplan reports had the Mavs in exploratory talks with Matt Barnes and RasualButler so probably a defensive wing who can nail a three.

Good point about Harrington replacing Thomas, except that Harrington is much better than Thomas.

Yes, by far.
I just have my doubts about him signing here.

Gotta be another player out there that comes to the Mavs in that deal
Gerald Wallace
Boris Diaw
Stephen Jackson
Nazr Mohammed
Desagana Diop
DJ Augustin
all work as far as the 6th player
Diaw (2yr/18mill), Jackson (3yr/28mill), and Diop (3yrs/20.8mill) make the most sense

Little bit more to it than how good Chandler is.
And I don't think it's out of the question that Chandler has a bit of a re-trenching year in the final year of his contract.
He doesn't have to re-trench much to be a perfectly fine backup center.

Kidd/Roddy/JJB
Butler/JET/Jones/Stevenson
Marion/Butler/Harrington
Dirk/Harrington/Ajinca
Haywood/Chandler/Mahinmi/Ajinca
Not too bad

I'd be pretty surprised if we ended up with all four centers on the team. Surely we can find someone that wants Ajinca. I wonder if the Mavs are regretting that Mahinmi contract now. Although I'm not sure how much you can regret a one year vet minimum contract.

Wasn't addressing you, sorry. The business benefits are obvious and make perfect sense. I was actually (ambiguously) referring to the first couple posts in the thread that were seemingly excited at simply gaining Chandler and didn't mention the monetary benefits at all, which is puzzling to me.

I feel more comfortable with Chandler as a backup center, that's for sure. Jefferson just wasn't a good fit when we're talking about a back up.

I must say, as one of the people most excited about the DUST chip and how much it could immediately improve our Mavs - this is, well, incredibly underwhelming. Who right about now wouldn't lick Joe Johnson if it would guarantee you his services for the DUST chip? And that is a guy that was low on most people's wish list. That is how much further down the wish list Tyson friggin Chandler is in my opinion.
Maybe this turns into something rather positive near the deadline, but then you still have the whole "short time to mesh" situation that can be difficult to deal with. You also only have Haywood if you do then send out Chandler, unless you are actually depending on one of those two projects to play serious minutes for a Championship-hopeful team.
Harrington doesn't do a ton for me either and his percentages aren't anything to write home about, but that would be a nice pickup for the MLE (I thought he would get more than that - and I thought he would want to start). I don't get the roster makeup at this point. It seems like another trade is mandatory. Check the 1s/2s/3s:
Kidd
JJB
Jet
Booby
Butler
Jones
Marion
Stevenson
Harrington
6 of those guys likely WANT to start (5 if you want to take Jet off the list). Where the hell do you fit everyone's minutes in? I just don't get it I guess. Not without another trade. Sure, great flexibility, but at the expense of adding chaos to the team. Maybe we trade like 4 of those guys for one of the 3 in Miami so they actually have a team and we have a stud, but considering that aint a happenin - yeah, sign me up for not thrilled.

There may well be another move coming, but count me as one who doesn't care much how many players "want" to start. If you want to start, be the best player on the team at your position. If you're not, you're not going to start. If a guy wants to be a baby about that, there's really nothing we can do.

And once again we didn't address our issue at the 2. I think the only reason Cuban didn't do Iggy/Brand for Damp/(Terry or garbage) was because he didn't want to take on Brand's contract. Since when did Cuban become "that guy"? I barely even wanna watch the nba now.
