Gafford in theory is excellent. We will see how he feels playing behind DP. In all seriousness, if thats all we do, im fine with it. We are a lot more versatile now.

Marc Stein
@TheSteinLine
The Mavericks, I?m told, are poised to acquire draft compensation from Oklahoma City that will be to routed to Washington to complete the Richaun Holmes-for-Daniel Gafford swap.

More than being a huge upgrade to our backup (Powell? DJJ has played more minutes at center the an Holmes), it means we will have a consistent starter We are 22-14 with Lively (.611) and 6-9 without him (.400). Having a legitimate center on the floor at all times is a game changer.

Funny thing is Powell has been playing better lately. So has Maxi. So our big man rotation actually looks solid now.

Good point Coopz made:
Lively has been told by Kidd to avoid fouls so his block/defense numbers have been pretty pedestrian. This will allow him to go harder and be more of a defensive force because we now have 12 fouls of quality centers instead of 6.

If Maxi and DP are limited to the lower minutes they should get. We have seen those 2, especially Maxi have streaks of games, like Thj, where they play well but then fall off a cliff. As long as Kidd doesnt fuck up the rotations.

Tonight's game is going to be nuts.
Mavs out
Lively (nose), Exum (knee), Holmes (trade purgatory)
Knicks out
Anunoby (elbow), Brunson? (ankle), Robinson (broken ankle), Randle (shoulder), Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiaco (trade purgatory)

Hope Nico can pull off 1 more deal to size up our wing.
If he doesn't, Kidd should play Prosper over GWill the rest of the season.

@BenRogers
My sources tell me that after the Gafford deal is done, the Mavs will still have all of the first round picks they currently possess through 2028, I think. My friends that know stuff about basketball, based on my info, think a deal will happen to get a 1st round pick from OKC, and that will go for Gafford. What have you guys been doing today? More draft coverage now on
|
The good: we still have our one FRP
The bad: what did we give to OKC to get them to give us a FRP? Green? Hardy? OMax?

Im wondering if the Mavs are somehow getting in on the deal that is sending Hayward to OKC. Wild speculation but maybe this is part of a three team deal (Mavs, Hornets, Thunder) that includes PJ coming to the Mavs. Again, wild speculation.

A third string shouldn?t even get playing time when you have Gafford and Lively.

I?d love to come out of this with Gafford and PJ. I really think PJ is on the verge of being legit but I thought Holmes was a good pick up too so there?s that lol.

I agree. No disagreement there. I guess i thought Kidd would like him too?.if he won?t play Gafford and PJ he needs to go faster then he already should.

Before:
Lively/Powell/DJJ/Holmes
GWill/DJJ/Kleber/Omax/Morris
After:
Lively/Gafford/Powell
Washington/DJJ/Kleber/Omax/Morris
I wouldn't say it was a homerun, but Nico had two strikes and three balls and somehow ended up hitting two doubles.

Giving up the first is tough, but Gafford makes that easier to swallow. Don't really have any holes anymore.

Wonder if that is what we're trading for Gafford or if OKC is still involved (Hardy for FRP,etc.)

OUT
Richaun Holmes
Grant Williams
Seth Curry
2027 FRP
IN
Gafford
Washington
Two SRPs
The only question is what did it take to get OKC's middle pick (of the three they have this year). Lots of talk of it being a bust of a draft, but it can't just be cash, right?

Sounds like the Mavs woulda used that and the 27 to get both Kuzma and Gafford. Glad they didn't spend two firsts on just one player.

This feels about as close as you can get to a complete Mavs team. Starting 4, starting 5, SOLID backup 5.

One of the things that I love about PJ Washington in Dallas as well?
Mavs now have their first forward that can shoot off the dribble. Last year PJ shot 39.4% on 3s off the dribble #MFFL
|
My only fears with PJ:
1) He falls in love with pullup threes and we have three guys jacking it
2) He continues to suck defensively. His first two seasons he was well above average. Since then, he's given up. Hopefully he can get back the hustle.
3) At 6'7" he's not much bigger than GWill and can be abused by bigger PFs (although how many of those are there?)
What excites me:
1) Luka/Kyrie/Green/PJ can all score on the drive and can all pass and they'll always have Lively or Gafford to catch lobs so bigs don't collapse on the drive without consequence. Strangely lob threats make drives easier.
2) PJ Can put up 40+ pts and isn't as hesitant as GWill.

The last 3/4 we had that shot off the dribble was Harrison Barnes. And he didn't play well with Luka.
But Luka is a different player now. Him learning to play with Green is a sign of Growth.
