Yao Breaks Left Foot
Rockets center Yao Ming broke his left foot when another player stepped on it late in the first quarter against Utah on Monday night.
He appeared to be injured when Utah's Kirilenko stepped on his foot while the two were under the basket. Yao got the offensive rebound and converted the three-point play after Kirilenko was called for a foul.

This may sound base and off-center but depending on the recovery time, it may be a good thing for Yao (and the Rockets) that Yao broke his foot. If Yao needs the summer to recover but can come back in time for training camp, he'll get that R&R away from the national team that he needs. At the same time, he can still rehab up to that point and then use TC to get in shape and do scheme/teammate familiarity work.
Of course, this is all assuming he comes 100% back and shows no traces of being injured.
Still, too bad for Yao. He was really taking the torch from Shaq as the dominant big man in the NBA this spring.

What a shame. He was playing well but the Rockets season was sad anyway.
It doesn't look like we'll get any help from them against SA. Go Seattle. Go Orlando.

I wished doom on the Rockets, but only until they were out of the playoff race and never on Yao. Yao I really like-- he's a great sportsman, a good basketball player and a likable character

how fragile do your bones have to be for a string bean like AK to break your foot by stepping on it?
I saw the play, freak thing... kirilenko didn't jump and land on it or anything like that. just stepped on it. not even that hard.

After foot surgery, Yao could be out 4-6 months
Associated Press
HOUSTON -- Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery this weekend on his broken left foot, and the injury could take four to six months to heal, general manager Carroll Dawson said Tuesday.
The 7-foot-6 Yao was hurt in the first quarter of an 85-83 loss to Utah on Monday.
An MRI performed in Houston on Tuesday showed a crack in the fifth metatarsal bone of the foot, Dawson said.
"It can be fixed two ways," Dawson said. "You could just put a cast on it, but it takes forever. The thing most people do is have the surgery."
It is not known if the surgery will prevent Yao from playing in the world championships in Japan, which begin Aug. 19.
Yao said he thought he hurt his foot when Utah's Mehmet Okur accidentally kicked it. Yao limped through a few more minutes and converted a three-point play before hobbling off the court with 3:51 left in the opening quarter.
Earlier this season, Yao missed 21 games following surgery to remove an infection from his left big toe. Since the All-Star break, Yao has been one of the NBA's top performers, averaging 26.6 points and 12 rebounds.
Eliminated from playoff contention, the Rockets have four games left in their injury-wracked season, starting Wednesday against Minnesota.
Leading scorer Tracy McGrady has missed 30 games with recurring back problems. As a whole, Rockets players have missed 258 games to injuries.

Wow, he's gonna be out for awhile. I don't like him that much at least.
