JET Undergoes Successful Hand Surgery
Quote:
Jason Terry underwent successful surgery on Monday to stabilize the fourth metacarpal fracture in his left hand. The Mavs are saying on Monday night that “no timetable has been set’’ for Jet’s return. So we’re stuck hoping the optimistic “three-week’’ take he provided to us comes true. And we’re stuck pondering how much Dallas will miss him. …
The surgery -- performed by Drs. Scott Oishi and T.O. Souryal at Texas Sports Medicine – is not a surprise. “Stabilizing’’ is the key word here. It's a good word. It beats some of the alternatives.
As the Mavs’ release notes, Terry was averaging 19.9 points, 3.7 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game … and we’ll add that those numbers, and everything else Jet brings, will be sorely missed.
Tim MacMahon pitches in with one more note: Jet is clutch. He's "The Closer.'' He is average of 6.4 points in fourth quarters puts him at eighth in the NBA.
Scroll down here for our at-length thoughts of who might get Jet's minutes and fill his role for the eight-plus games he figures to miss.

Mavericks considering options with Terry sidelined
link
DALLAS -- Jason Terry's hand injury Saturday may be more damaging to the Mavericks' postseason hopes than his shooting stroke. Dallas can ill afford to lose its second-leading scorer for any significant length of time considering the logjam in the bottom half of the Western Conference playoff picture.
Terry's injury could lead to the Mavericks stepping up their efforts to shake up the roster via trade. Of all the internal candidates to replace Terry's firepower, injured guard Jerry Stackhouse could be the best one.
With his career scoring average of 18.5 points, Stackhouse is a proven scorer. The problem is he's been on the shelf for nearly three months recovering from a foot injury. He's getting closer to returning to practice fulltime -- Stackhouse has begun doing some drills -- but won't rush it because Terry is hurt.
"I'm on my body's pace," Stackhouse told NBA.com. "Whenever I'm ready, I'll be ready."
Stackhouse could factor in to replacing Terry without actually stepping on the floor for Dallas. His desirable contract ($7 million this season and only $2 million guaranteed next year) could easily be used to trade for reinforcements before the Feb. 19 deadline.
The Mavericks are looking at players that might be available. Some possibilities include John Salmons, Larry Hughes, Ben Gordon, Anthony Parker and Jason Kapono. Though Dallas general manager Donnie Nelson is surveying the landscape, he would prefer not have to deal for help.
"It's impossible to replace Jet, especially given the incredible year he's had," Nelson told NBA.com Sunday. "If there's any silver lining, it's a position we've got some depth at and Jerry is close as well. There is no question we need someone to step up and fill some big shoes, Bob Lanier-sized shoes for our team.
"Given the fact that he'll be back in a matter of weeks, Jet's injury doesn't significantly alter our tact on the player-acquisition front. The solution must come from within our locker room."
Terry, this season's favorite for sixth man of the year, fractured the fourth metacarpal on his left (non-shooting) hand late in the first half against Chicago. Terry didn't return and his status is being reevaluated. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said Terry is "out for a while."
"He almost had tears in his eyes," Dirk Nowitzki said of Terry. "That is how much he cares and we told him we got this one for him and we would hold the fort down. I mean, he is the best sixth man in the league and he means a lot to this team, and we are going to miss him dearly, but he will be back soon and we know he is a tough guy.
"The good thing is we have the All-Star break in between, so that is a couple of days where nothing is going on, so hopefully he won't miss too many games. It is always disappointing to somebody get hurt."
Though no timetable has been set, it's not uncommon for such injuries to lead to absences of at least several weeks. Ike Diogu suffered a fractured fourth metacarpal several years ago and missed six weeks while playing for Golden State. The Mavericks (30-20) are probably hoping for a situation like Denver's Carmelo Anthony, who broke a bone in this shooting hand last month and missed only three weeks.
The sooner Terry returns the better for the Mavericks, who are seventh in the West and only two games ahead of ninth-place Phoenix. Terry, Nowitzki and Josh Howard have been Dallas' only consistent scoring threats this season. Other than those three, no one else on the team is averaging more than nine points.
Should the Mavericks not make a move, finding Terry's 20 points a night won't be a one-man job. The natural choice is J.J. Barea, the dynamic backup point guard who's had several high-scoring games this season. Barea appears to be more effective in short bursts than long stretches, but he did score 20 in the 115-114 overtime victory over the Bulls.
"We couldn't have won the game without him," Carlisle said of Barea.
Antoine Wright, Gerald Green, Devean George, James Singleton and recently-acquired Matt Carroll could also be in the mix, though none of those options has shown the ability to be a high-volume scorer. Expect the Mavericks front office to explore all avenues, internally and around the league, to replace Terry.
"We're going to have to piece this thing together without him for a while," Carlisle said. "We've got a lot of good players and we have enough to win games."

^^^ Thanks
I really don't know what's going to happen right now. On one hand, I want the Mavs to make a trade for a decent SG to carry the load while JET is injured. On the other hand, I'm scared that they might make a trade which really won't benefit the team, or worse, might make the team worse.
I've read some articles that the recovery time is around the vicinity of 4 weeks. Some other articles have said that it may extend to 6-8 weeks. I'm just hopeful that since the injury is not in his shooting hand, it won't take too long before JET comes back.

Jet with one hand is better than just about the rest of our roster.
This could suck horribly, and really hamper our playoff chances. I just don't know where our scoring is gonna come from without him. Dirk can only do so much.

That's my concern as well. Dirk can probably carry the load for a few games, but to expect him to take 30++ shots a game, hope that he scores at least 30 a game, playing 40++ minutes might just drain him too much. Worse, he might get injured himself. Now, that would be disastrous.

How does this not alter anything on the player acquisition front?
Ok...to put it more plainly, what DOES alter anything on the player acquistion front?
Are we going to "like our team" forever?

If Jet can pull a Dirk and return after three weeks like he says, he will have missed eight games, which isn't too bad for a broken bone.

1) saying that the injury doesn't have any impact on the player acquisition front doesn't mean the team isn't hoping to acquire someone; it just means the standards for determining what constitutes a good deal for the team haven't changed.
2) more generally, you do not make decisions that could impact the fortunes of the franchise for years to come on the basis of a month-long injury.

At least this is going on during the time of the all-star break. A lot of dead time where at another point of the season we'd have big games.

I seem to remember a promising young pg who got injured and it seemed in my eyes he was traded partly because of that around-month-long injury. A month out this season could mean the end of even a playoff birth. So, if you can logically conclude the potential of missing the playoffs this season isn't a big deal, well, I guess that be argued.
And we'll see what the FO does before the deadline...

I'm not sure why people still cite "We Like Our Team" as if it has any meaning, considering that a mere month after that was originally said we made a monumental trade in Harris for Kidd.

Yee but that one player that you happen to be talking about was injured a lot and still gets injured a lot, Where as JET has not really missed any significant time in his career.

You think they were so concerned about the team staying afloat while Devin was missing time that they waited until just before he was healthy enough to play again and only then traded him away in a franchise-altering move? Really? And even assuming Devin was shipped out because of his injury, if the precedent you're operating from regarding injury-motivated trades is a swap that you weren't in favor of, why would you be arguing in favor of repeating the mistake?
The bottom line is this, and it stands regardless of whether or not JET's injury puts the team at risk for missing the playoffs this season: if the Mavs make a panic trade for a player who can provide some points in JET's place but who will be a poor fit once the team's at full strength again, or who jacks up the team's salary structure looking ahead without providing enough of a boost to their fortunes on the court in the short term, they will have shot themselves in the foot and ruined whatever chance they may still have of both making a run at a championship with a Dirk-led team, and of capitalizing on the 2010 free agent class.

He's only missed 12 games in 9.5 years prior to this injury. JET deserves his props.

I would be surprised if Terry didn't miss that much time, look what happened to the Lakers Jordan Farmar...they said Farmar wasn't gonna come back untill after the All-Star game but he came back before that so you never know Terry might be back sooner than we think.

It's possible that they're hiding the extent of his injury (no timetable) so that it doesn't seem like we're desperate for a trade...right?

OK, he underwent a surgery to stabilize the bone. Don´t think he will be able to play basketball until the bone has regrown + some time for muscle conditioning. My guess: 6 weeks out.

But that hand is his non-shooting hand, so its possible, if he can brace it, he can come back before its fully healed and home he doesn't hit the floor much.
Edit: I still doubt that he'll be back in less than 4 weeks. I'm just hopeful.

If JET is back by March 4th, he should sit out that game. Bowen will slap his hand until it breaks again if he plays.
