I honestly just don't want Bamba or MPJ, but anyone else out of the 4-5 guys that could be available to us in that range (Doncic, JJJ, Bagley, Carter Jr) are all A-OK with me!
Edit: And I'd love if we could trade our 2019 pick (might need to be unprotected/very lightly protected) for 9 or 10 to take Mikal Bridges... I think there's a good chance he ends up having one of the 5 or 6 best careers in this draft class. He has rich man's Shane Battier written all over him. Exactly what we thought/hoped Jae Crowder would develop into.

Not completely opposed to this idea, but would prefer someone with a higher ceiling like Zhaire Smith instead.

From a pure marketing standpoint Bamba would be huge both literally and figuratively. The shaq personality and record wingspan would be lots of fun for casual fans, new fans, and especially kids. Gotta put people in the seats as much as anything. If the draft goes conservatively, then I think he will be the pick.
But man, 3 days before and still no clue who goes after Ayton. We have discussed these guys to the point of nausea, and I'll be glad when we can just focus on our guy.

This guy will do the opposite of put people in their seats. And, Maybe this will help break up the monotony of all the draft talk for a few mins at least.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is this year's De'Arron Fox except that he can shoot threes.

Yeah I like that dude. Wonder if he is a surprise in the top-10? Been saying this ad nauseam, but this is a hell of a rich draft. Jealous of teams with multiple picks. Wish we had a more progressive leadership team that could've foreseen the need for picks in the current league landscape.

No kidding. Guys like Alexander, Knox, Smith...could all be high first rounders in most drafts. That's why teams aren't just going to give up a pick for peanuts.

I think if there is even a remote chance at Memphis pick we need to take back Parsons, Mclemore, and send Barnes or Wes, whichever they prefer, with a 2019 pick protected accordingly. Take MPJ or Donic, whoever is left at 4 and Bamba or JJJ at 5. Or trade down to 7 for WCJ if the opportunity arises and grab #22 to take another wing like Khyri Thomas or Divencenzo.
I know its not gonna happen. Pipe dream of the day

Memphis should be interested in this if it were Barnes. I'm surprised there hasn't been more leaks or rumors of talks about it.

@MavsHighlights: Reached out to 21 members of Mavs Media & asked them anonymously who they thought the Mavs would get on Thursday if they stay at #5
out of 19 responses, their answers broke down like this:
12 said Mo Bamba (63.1%)
6 said JJJ (31.5%)
1 said MPJ (5.2%)
thanks to our participants

I think they go MPJ if he's available. Final answer.

Sounds like we might be willing to trade up to get him... So, yeah.

So either...
1) We have been shopping for Doncic. A team that we've been on the phone with leaked this to Woj
or
2a) We leaked this because we have someone else in mind (although it seems illogical because Doncic is slated to be a top 2-5 talent regardless of our leak.
2b) We're incompetent and it got out

Personally I’d prefer they stay at 5. Maybe this will entice the FO to give in and add Barnes to that deal with Memphis and get the 4th pick. Take Luka at 4 and Bamba at 5.

That panel goes on to say that Sacramento takes Luka and we take Bamba. Not much of a surprise.

You won't find many bigger fans of taking Doncic than me. But I'm not trading up for him. If he's there he's there but the price to move up is probably way too high when we are guaranteed a good player if we just sit there.

I honestly think the cost to move up 3 spots might not be that high this year. As others have said, this is a 5-6 man draft depending on what the consensus on MPJs health is. Are they really losing out by going back 3 spots? Just depends on need and rank on talent.
Plus if they are certain we are picking someone they would prefer off the board, it only helps.

I think at the very we least we’d have to give up our 1st next season moderately protected. Say, top-5. They have the leverage. If you’re calling to move up, it means you’re in love

Rick loves Doncic. Pretty sure Rick wants him more than Bagley or Porter or a project Like JJJ

I'm gonna believe that he Mavs aren't foolish enough to let it out the bag who they plan on drafting. Its not like they have a top 2 pick.....They are basically getting the elite prospect that everyone else doesn't take that's ahead of them.....so i'm hoping they are trying to sway who that guy is. How did Doncic go from being a top 3 pick to falling to us all of a sudden?

Yea I don't think the Doncic love is true. It's the same crap we pulled with Frank Ntilikina last year. I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow or day after there will be a report stating that "Mavs narrowed down their pick between Doncic and MPJ". It'll put the pressure on the Kings and Grizzlies to take those guys causing someone like Bagley to fall.
Honestly, I have no idea which big man the Mavs are zeroing in on. My guess is Bagley. We lack offense and rebounding. A 19 year old kid who averages 20 and 11 with Amar'e Stoudemire upside might help with that.

That’s exactly what I think is going on. I mean I really like Doncic but the Mavs are really needing a big. I still believe the guy they really want is Bamba. Enticing teams to pick Doncic and MPJ only helps them.

Doncic is a prime target in this draft and one of the safest picks, but if Mavs indeed are all in it would seem they
a) concluded that all of the bigs come with too many risks
b) are confident they get a big in FA
c) do not look for needs / position / fit at this point and want the best player
That said, I'd much rather have a second pick in the lottery and #5 than trading up for Doncic. I'd really like to get Mikal if possible.

It’s that double-reverse psychology time of the year...
Mavs like Luka... With the #1 pick in the draft, Phoenix takes Luka Doncic!
Mavs like Porter... With the #2 pick in the draft, Sacramento takes Michael Porter Jr.!
Mavs like Bamba... With the #3 pick in the draft, Atlanta takes Mo Bamba!
Mavs like Bagley... With the #4 pick in the draft, Memphis takes Marvin Bagley III!
Lol, y’all’s dummies... With the #5 pick in the draft, Dallas takes DeAndre Ayton!

There are 3 areas of dire need on this team and one of them should easily be addressed with the 5th pick. No reason for Donnie and Cuban to get too aggressive.
I'm all for adding picks by taking on salary but don't think we should be moving that pick unless it is for Brown or someone of his caliber and age range.

Draftexpress had an interesting fact:
In 2017-2018 there were 456 players on NBA rosters.
42% (192) were either drafted in the second round or went undrafted.
Hope we find some gems with 33 and 54 and if we can’t get another first rounder maybe we can buy some second rounders

We have our full "cash considerations" in hand this time, right? We possibly missed out on Jordan Bell last year because used cash to get rid of Jeremy Evans deal, if I'm remembering right. Oh, that onerous Evans deal. So nice to be out from under that one...

Looking back at old posts and it looks like the Mavs finally escaped the Satnam/Podkolzin curse by drafting three guys in the second that they want to play.
Kostas is Probably the furthest from producing but seems like they got him to develop him rather than just selling jerseys in Greece
