Kings and Pacers swap Peja and Artest
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2304512
reactions?
Did the Kings just get a whole lot better?
or dig a giant hole to deposit their corpse?

Peja on a team with a real inside presence could be quite scary, if they use him well and the current funk he is in is just a funk and isn't permanent.

Good for Indiana. No difference for Sacramento. I don't see Artest will make a huge impact on the Kings but the Kings ain't got nothing to lose by doing the deal anyway.

That Indiana team could be pretty good, if Peja gets out of his funk. I still don't think it is any better than 3rd in the conference though.
Artest for the Kings makes sense, he should get all the shots he wants, but I have a feeling that him and Rahim or Miller will be at it here shortly.

it may help a little, but its like trying to plug a bullet wound with a band aid. you have two huge leaks at PG and C on defense. and then a below average to fair defender at the 4. i like artest, but he may be only good for 2 or 3 pts on D.

I think we should all be very happy he didn't go to the Lakers, Denver or Minnesota.

I was just about to ask what's up with Peja and if we could get to play backup over here :P I was thinking we could make it work with him over here, and was just about to make a thread about it yesterday.

So...everyone at kingsfans.com is saying the deal is now off. Has anyone heard this?

ESPN is now reporting the deal is dead.
BREAKING NEWS
Artest
Artest Trade To Kings Off
Ron Artest's saga in Indiana continues on. The Pacers tried to trade Artest to the Kings for Peja Stojakovic, but ESPN's Jim Gray reports the deal is off because Artest turned it down.

Damn!
Did Artest have a choice, a no-trade clause or something? This was an awesome deal for the Kings!

The story that I'm reading (mind you...just message board chatter) is that Artest said he would not show up if traded to the Kings. The Kings organization got wind of it, and nixed the deal.

Can you blame Artest for not wanting to go to SAC? I mean he even said he didn't want to go there when he first wanted a trade. Why is this such a surprise?

Ron Artest went public and DEMANDED A TRADE.
That was screw job # 1.
Now he has botched this trade and even further diminished his trade value, as you got to believe this was probably the best deal on the table.
That's screw job # 2.
He's making alot of money right now to sit on his ass. Sometimes in the NBA you get traded to places you don't want to go. You should be expected to act like a professional, that's one of the reasons you make the big bucks.
He's an embarassment to the league.

No..I didn't forget. Nor did I forget that prior to the brawl he wanted time off to pursue his musical career.

You know, I actually liked Artest before all this despite his antics... Indiana's always been my second favorite team, and I just flat out like his game... But demanding a trade after he single-handedly ruined the Pacers' season last year, and after that organization has stood up for him time and again, he showed that his selfishness knows no bounds. And if this story is true, then I argree with Kiki that the Pacers should sue his ass. For HIS sake, I hope this is just a rumor.
All that being said, if this trade does happen, then I think Indiana has just put itself back in title contention.

You can't blame the Kings for backing out. With the new rule Artest would have just been suspended for not reporting but the Kings would still be screwed.
Artest is paid well and should be ready to play anywhere. I'm sick of these players saying they don't want to go here or there for whatever reason. The league needs to do something about him.

This just pisses me off. The Pacers went to bat for him on several occassions, and he's f*cked them over and over again.

Exactly. I hope Bird finds a team that won't care whether he reports or not. And the league just suspends him without pay.
He screwed the Kings as well. Peja didn't make the trip to Philly so the Kings are playing without him tonight. And how do the Kings recover with Peja now that the deal is dead? They almost have to deal him now.

Artest-Peja trade collapses
By Mark Montieth
mark.montieth@indystar.com
A trade that would have sent Ron Artest to Sacramento for Peja Stojakovic has collapsed.
The Kings reportedly called off the deal because of Artest's reluctance to play for them, although Artest was vague about his wishes in a conversation with The Indianapolis Star.
"There's no deal," Artest said in a telephone interview. "It's not that I don't want to play there . . . I'm letting my agent handle things. He's taken over things."
Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, was unavailable for comment.
Stevens told the Star earlier in the day that a deal had been reached, pending league approval.
Artest said he is not planning to refuse a trade, but wants to speak with prospective teams first.
"I just want to meet with team officials of whichever team I'm headed to," he said. "I want to play, but I'm following the rules I have to follow. If I have to sit out, I sit out the season."

Sounds like there wasn't a "real" deal that artest could actuall back out of so he won't be able to be fined.
However he's such an idiot that just the threat of him being upset is enough to have a no-trade clause.
The pacers were IDIOTS for not taking Maggete(sp?) when they had a chance no matter his current injury. They could have then at least gotten insurance. Now they will get jack.

What options to the Pacers even have now? Honestly, it looks like they'll just have to trade for peanuts, like Toronto did with VC. Hell, at this point they might even want to think about just buying out his contract if he's gonna screw up any deal that they try to make happen.

And they can't even just trade for picks. They are going to have to pick up a 7mil contract in return. Yuck...

I don't know, before Artest was on everyone's radar despite his antics on and off the court. But now, the situation is a lot more risky for teams because of Artest being the jerk that he is and the possiblity of him turning the team down. Question, does Artest not see that this sh*t hurts him? or does he not really care. I say kick him out of the league, I'm being serious.

I don't know how they kick him out of the league? What has he done other than say he doesn't like his job.
Now I can see no one ever hiring the guy again, but kicking him out, I don't see it.

"I guess this is just a business, but the way I was told and the way I found out, I feel I deserved better from [Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof]. Anybody can get traded in the NBA, but the way I found out, it was disrespectful. I deserve better after seven and a half years." - Peja Stojakavic
Looks like even if it isn't for Artest, the Kings will probably have no choice but to move him now. I dunno what the hell Artest is bitching about. It's an ideal scenario for everyone involved; Peja gets to play for a new team and possibly contend for a title, Artest gets a fresh start and an opportunity to play with two very talented players in Bibby and Miller (again), Indiana gets a great player to compliment JO and resume their title aspirations, and Sacto gets a lockdown defender who's no pushover on offense either. Does Artest honestly think he gets to choose to only go to a title contender? After all the sh*t he's pulled...

Artest is an idiot. That would be a great place for him to be and it would be a good deal for the Pacers. When the the selfishness come to a stop.

Actually I thought it was a great deal for the pacers but the kings were taking a pretty huge chance. Artest should have been ecstatic, he could have bullied his way to being the scoring man he wanted to be.
Peja seemed like a good fit for Indiana as well. They could move that other knucklehead steven jackson and still had a shooter.
The kings are hosed but Peja will be shocked at how little of a contract he gets. The NBA has become a penetrators league and he doesn't.
