Shocking news: Marty Schottenheimer fired!
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2763552
SAN DIEGO -- Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired Monday night in a shocking move by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a "dysfunctional situation" between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.
The move was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

When told the situation between Schottenheimer and Smith was described by Spanos as "dysfunctional," Schottenheimer said "that's a pretty accurate description."
"I enjoyed time with all the players and coaches there ... we made a hell of a lot of progress," Schottenheimer told ESPN's Mortensen. "We had one the best records in football over the past three years. We're leaving behind a good football team and a great bunch of guys. They can't take away what we accomplished."
As for Schottenheimer's relationship with Smith, Schottenheimer said: "I don't know why it was so bad. Everytime I tried to get an explanation of why there was such a bad reaction, he always had the same rebuttal ... he didn't want to talk about it."
Spanos indicated in the statement that the Chargers will pay Schottenheimer for the last year of his contract.

And this couldn't have happened FIVE DAYS AGO?
Geez - even Jerry couldn't screwed up a Schottenheimer hire.

The Chargers will be in LA within the next 2-5 years (someone has to be & this club seems to be positioning itself for the move...)

I had a feeling this would happen. I thought the same way about Lovie Smith. Had he not gotten to the Super Bowl his job might've been in jeorpady as well. After losing Phillips though I didn't think the Chargers would have this much turnover. They have a solid team but all of those coaching changes isn't going to do the team any good. We've seen in Dallas how a talented team can end up underachieving due to poor coaching.

Shottenheimer can't win the big one. He, like Dan Reeves can make a bad team good, but can't make a good team great. Good for the chargers. Cut your losses now. I'm glad Dallas didn't get him.

....that would seem like the obvious answer to me...
so, in all probability the 14-2 chargers won't want to hire some untested guy, but instead they'll want a head coach who a) has some experience as a head coach; and b) knows the 3-4....
iow, they're criteria will be quite similar to J-Jone's criteria, but they rejected the obvious choice in Phillips.....
odd.........either a) they know wade best, and wade sucks; or b) there's a bit more turmoil in San Diego than we presently realize.....
thinking about it, I'm guessing the see-ya schottenheimer thing ain't quite so well orchestrated..........more likely a very recent internal blow-up led to this sort of thing.
