It is pretty obvious who was the source of the leak to Tim Cato and the Athletic.

Donnie? If so, why wouldn't Cato confirm this now?
Donnie does NOT strike me as a guy who would leak that kind of info. He's a grown man, with an established rep, leaking info like that is a kids game tbh

I cannot imagine how difficult it is to work for a nitwit like Cuban for 24 years.

It would be one thing to work for him and see him once a year at meetings. But it must be awful to have him bothering you constantly about things that he knows NOTHING about

Bill Simmons said that Haralabob told Simmons circa 2017 that he told Cuban to do everything he can to get Luka the following year (2018 draft). Untold in the Cato story is that Haralabob first started doing part time consulting with Cuban in the 2016/17 timeframe. I think there is a strong chance that Cuban was on to Luka with or without Donnie. Nice revisionist history in the Donnie camp that nobody knew about Luka as he invisibly led his team to the Euroleague championship while picking up an invisible MVP.

If Donnie was REALLY all in on the Greek Freak then he should have cut salary someplace else to save the money that Cuban wanted. I think this is a myth

The one guy who told the truth.
The truth can hurt......YOU if you tell it.
"Here's a guy (Doncic) that thinks that he can win every possession of every game," said Nelson. "His numbers are unique. I think part of his maturity is again knowing how to balance all those kill shots with involving teammates at the right time."

I do know that their supposed rift, tiff, whatever you want to call it, is way overblown." - Donnie Nelson, ex-Mavs GM

It's already been reported that they have hired a firm to look for a new GM, so no.

@RKonkle_Mavs
Woj just now on ESPN regarding Donnie’s departure: “Here is what it won’t impact: Luka Doncic’s future with the Mavericks. Luka is disappointed for Donnie Nelson and was very fond of him...But life goes on. Players aren’t tethered to coaches/executives in this league”

Hopefully the new GM takes a good look at the coaching staff as well
I think everything needs to be revaluated and Luka should have some input on his coach (current or new)

I think dallas-mavs.com needs to be the new GM. We can collectively come up with the right moves.

We would have drafted Greek Freak. That's our credentials.

In 2013 NBA draft year I would have traded Dirk and the 13th pick for 4 1st round picks: 15th, 17th, 24th, and 27th. Dennis Schröder, Tim Hardaway Jr, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Rudy Gobert. I TOTALLY would have made that move.

Do think it is safe to say that he was very good at evaluating foreign talent. That's probably replaceable.
I think the bigger issue is WHY did he leave? Given RC's departure the next day, I think one can only conclude the rumors around Voulgaris getting way too much authority are true. His previous job? Professional gambler. So, while that may indicate he was pretty good at a certain set of analytics, it also indicates he doesn't have clue one about how things work in the NBA, or maybe even personnel interactions in general. Yet, at this point in time, he IS the front office, along with Cuban.
The interesting question around Voulgaris is...if he were let go, would there be a big market for him out there? I'd have to suspect no. In which case...why is he getting so much control?
This was always going to be a critical off season, and subsequent season. Not that is even more true.

It's my biggest concern atm... Bob's contract is up yet there has been no official announcement he is gone... What GM wants to sign onto a job with a guy who allegedly only heads up an analytics department but might possibly have the clout to push roster moves through and suggest lineups to the coach. Oh and he fancies himself the smartest guy in the room in every room.

Someone who works with me from a 3rd party company told me some old stories he had while working with Donnie Nelson. I knew he was a basketball fan but never knew he worked with the Mavericks and directly with Donnie Nelson for 3 years. He was trying to become an assistant coach. He felt sad when he heard the news that Donnie was leaving the Mavericks, but he thinks he could potentially still have partial ownership of the Texas Legends. He's been back in the locker room since leaving the Mavericks for a better paying job, and Donnie would ask him what he is doing there and if he needed a job. My work associate would tell him only if the pay is right. He loved those 3 years and told me it never felt like work to him. Also he told me how he'd tease Dirk about having to play some defense and how Dirk was always cracking jokes. I'm glad he shared this with me. He told me he normally doesn't tell anyone about that. He was with the organization for the seasons from '03 through '06.

Sounds like Cuban part two. Let's not forget how much Cuban interferes with the GM position and Cuban is a guy who thinks he's the smartest guy in the franchise.
By hiring Bob, we doubled the number of problems in the franchise.
