More taxes ideas...
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009...ringe-benefit/
So now the idea is to tax individuals for Cell phone use as income provided by the company.
Will the IRS allow us to deduct if we actually one cell phone for company use and one cell phone for personal use?
I have two cell phones...one that my company pays for and that I use for busines, the 2nd one, I pay for and use for personal use. I do this to keep from having to answer the work phone after hours. Besides, the cost of the 2nd phone is pretty cheap with the family plan we are on...
In addition to this, I heard or read another story where someone in Congress is proposins a "Mileage" tax...basically charging taxes to individuals who own cars, based on how much Mileage they put on that car per year.
These are obviously two insane tax ideas that most likely will fail before ever seeing the light of day, but with these idea...I wonder what other insane ideas our government is working through the system to tax our hard earned dollars?

How are they gonna determine my mileage? Are they gonna go and check everyone's odometers? Are they gonna adjust for variations in wheel/tire sizes? Why not tax me on the # of peas I eat a yr.

Mileage is logged when you get your state inspections.
Tracking mileage is rather easy...to see these types of ideas getting the light of day, so much for freedom...

like MX45 is pointing out, that's the wrong direction. It's better for them to tax the same thing several times under different ledger entries, rather than trying to pile it all up in the same place.
They'll tax mileage 1st, then the number of stoplights you pass through, and then the number of left turns you make, then the number of right turns you make (cameras are already in place), and then the number of times you get pulled over by the cops for no reason (which is perfect, because they can actually control that!). Then they can tax you inversely for the number of people in your car - then for the number of people you do have in your car, etc. etc.

... which is why you just simply tax fuel, instead. people adjust their behavior (or don't) based on the price incentives placed before them in the way that is most efficient to their own circumstances.
taxing fuel is the most economically efficient way to achieve objectives, and it is also the simplest. you run into problems (and bureaucracy) when you try to target these things... just tax the fuel.

But they're running short on the expected money from taxing fuel. The real goal is government wealth, not behavior modification.

not governmental wealth, governmental power.
<edit>
of course wealth begats power, but wealth in itself will not get done what some want.

mcsluggo, the last couple of posts are right on.
Here are your problems:

The government does not want economic efficiency. They skim the inefficiencies, and they definitely do not want to avoid the problem of bureaucracy. They are the bureaucracy!
