I have a feeling this team is going to be really good next year. Really good.
The lineup is going to be great and it is a team built around Dirk and his talents. Athletes, length, shooting, defense, versatility, I.Q., rebounding, height, you name it.
Jason Kidd, Josh Howard, Shawn Marion, Dirk Nowitzki, Marcin Gortat along with the best sixth man of the year, Jason Terry. That is a wicked top 6. And oh yeah, Rick F'ing Carlisle.
This, barring injuries, is going to be a GREAT team. A 64 win regular season type team and a 7 game series against the Lakers with home court advantage type team.
I'm excited.
The Window Is Back.

Kidd/Terry/Howard/Marion/Gortat
That's a damn fine lineup - now add Dirk...
(boy, it's easy to take that guy for granted - nice to see they've finally put a team around him!)

Is this the best Dallas roster (on paper) of all-time?
I think yes.

I'm not sure how many fans realize how much overachieving this team has done this decade.
If this lineup overachieves, great things could be happening.

Why is JaJuan Smith not playing in the Summer League?
Why did Shan Foster not play last night? Why is Calathes not playing also?
Thanks

Yeah, some dude on a Magic message board posted that we aren't getting Gortat, so that obviously must be true.
I'm going to trust the professional newspaper reporter who says we are getting him, until he's proven wrong.

just pp, anyways I am now kind of concerned because Otis seems to think he can get him and use his trade value and ship him elsewhere, there are reports coming out of different places Magic expect to match, hope I am wrong though.

Good point, when you looked at last years team on paper no way should we have been one of last 8 standing.

Dirk looked a step slower last year. I kinda have my doubts that we'll see the same Dallas due to Dirk not being quite as efficient as he used to be. We need Gortat badly though. Otherwise expect a lot of small ball.

He showed no signs of that last year, 48% from field, 24.7 per 36 minutes, 8 rebounds per 36 minutes, 89% from free throw line, assists slightly down but so were turn overs.

The main concern would be Josh's ankles, and how many games he can play. Fortunately, we won't be as dependent on the three guard lineup this time around.

If a step slower = All NBA 1st Team
I'll take it
Could another step slower = Championship

Dirk's game has always been completely dependent on speed like Barbosa's-- oh wait.

Meh, I think we'll be better, but not top 2 in the West. With Marion, our defense should be much better, particularly when playing elite swingmen. Josh and Marion can take turns to wear a guy down. Offensively, we have someone else to take the load off Dirk. Hopefully we stay healthy all year and we'll be in good shape.

Honestly, if we stay healthy, we have the talent and pieces to stay really competitive for at least two more years without more changes. That's not counting the DUST chip.

You're kidding, right?
07-08 (regular season): 23.6 PPG / .479 FG% / .359 3P% / .879 FT% / 8.6 RPG / 3.5 APG / 0.7 SPG / 0.9 BPG / 1.94 TO / 2.60 PF / 36.0 MPG
08-09 (regular season): 25.9 PPG / .479 FG% / .359 3P% / .890 FT% / 8.4 RPG / 2.4 APG / 0.8 SPG / 0.8 BPG / 1.93 TO / 2.20 PF / 37.7 MPG
07-08 (playoffs): 26.8 PPG / .473 FG% / .333 3P% / .808 FT% / 12.0 RPG / 4.0 APG / 0.2 SPG / 1.4 BPG / 2.00 TO / 2.60 PF / 42.2 MPG (5 games)
08-09 (playoffs): 26.8 PPG / .518 FG% / .286 3P% / .925 FT% / 10.1 RPG / 3.1 APG / 0.9 SPG / 0.8 BPG / 2.30 TO / 2.10 PF / 39.4 MPG (10 games)
Dirk's assists, rebounds and 3P% were down from last season, but rebounding is the only stat out of those three that could indicate him losing a step (although, you'd fully expect his assists/rebounds to take a dip with Kidd on the squad...)

Dirk's physical resilience and ability to keep adding to his toolbox are going to keep him a cut above the rest of the NBA for another 3-5 seasons (I can see him pulling a Reggie Miller by being a threat on the court until he's 40...)

We should blow it all up now. I mean seriously. SIX guys 30 or above? In human years thats like 95!
Kidd 36
Damp 33 (34 in two days-- happy b-day big DUST)
Buckner 32
Terry 31 (32 before the season starts!)
Dirk 31
Marion 31
Everyone knows that the prime age of an NBA player is from 15-25 and 30 is so far beyond peak that we might as well hire a shuttle and send half our team to the near-death star

I really hope he wants to stay in the NBA as a Reggie type player late in his career.. He'd be so effective, especially with the added height to get that 3 ball off.

Hollinger ranked Dirk the 9th most efficient player in the NBA last season...

With Marion playing PF too and the 4th scorer in the team Dirk can pull a Duncan and chill often after 30-32min PT on the bench together with Matt Carroll.
Seriously, 33 is the start of "truly aging" for me. Marion/Dirk/Josh/Jet, thats all prime for me...and 2 more years prime
Kidd doesnt get any slower with 38 than 36 and Dirk is the gummi man anyway and Damp is gone 2010 for a young Sammy.

Far from the year of his MVP level game. For those who think last year was close to his best I gotta disagree big time.

His FGA was sick in his MVP year. I hope he finds his three back. Dont know to where that dissapeared over the years...he way too often decline the open three to make seconds later his sick unbalanced fade away

I dont think next year will be much different then this passed season. Just one Marion and couple next guys won't make a huge different. Look at other teams, they are not bad.

Dirk's MVP year-
24.6 ppg/.502 fg%/.416 3pt%/.904 ft%/8.9 rpg/.7 spg/.8 bpg/ 2.14 TO/2.20 PF/36.2 MPG
Far from the year of his mvp level game??? Pretty damn similar actually. Sure his percentages were down a bit, but I think you can attribute that to his supporting cast being the crappiest it's been in recent years rather than any physical decline on his part. Dirk hasn't lost a step, and you don't have a leg to stand on.
Edit: For the record, I'm not saying that last year was Dirk's best, but to suggest that there has been any kind of noticeable decline in his game is just silly. He's got several all-nba level years left in him, because the game he plays nowadays is one that favors longevity. It's not like 04-05 when he charged to the rim with no regard for his own well being. These days it's all pump-fakes and turnaround jumpers. Not terribly taxing physically.

Agree on this point as well. I think fans see we were a 50 win team with that atrocious team we had last season but fact is we overachieved. We may be a better team this year and may still get around 50 wins. I do think this team is definately better than last years. I still don't think we should stand pat though. I still think we should look to make some moves because as of right now we're good enough to compete but I wouldn't be shocked if we had another 1st or 2nd round exit either.

Overachieved? What a notion. That's just a smarmy way of saying, "My analysis wasn't off, the empirical evidence was off."
