Clash of the Titans -
I liked the original story a lot (from the original film). I wonder if they will change it too much that I don't like it, however I'm pretty excited to see their take on Hades and the underworld.

One of the best movies ive seen recently. I thought they were gonna go a different way with the ending(same vein but different way to get there) It also happens to be the biggest badass denzel has ever played. Moreso even then creasy from man on fire.

Hurt Locker- Really good, but I'm not sure about best picture.
Moon- Pretty good actually (a nice year for sci fi)
Surrogates- I thought it was pretty lame actually. It was I Robot meets Avatar but more like I Robot....and worse.

Better fighter, sure. But he'll never play a bigger badass than the guy he played in Training Day.
Oh, and Book of Eli was great, Hurt Locker was great, and Moon was great. Good run of movie viewing for me recently.

Received from Amazon yesterday:
blu-ray - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
blu-ray - Unforgiven
I started awhile back a collection of all C. Eastwood movies just as a goal/hobby...
and finally, one of my favorite movies as a kid:
Places in the Heart - great cast and memorable story of redemption.. if the ending doesn't hit you then you're a cold mfer

i wouldn't define denzel's role in training day as badass, moreso deceptive. even though training day is at number 5 on my all-time favorite list. i like how the movie didn't shy away from the religious tone it set. i didn't see that twist coming at all.

My recent movie observations. I guess there are some SPOILERS in this post so....
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Avatar - visually stunning and very beautiful. But whoever said (upthread) that the screenplay was a joke was spot on. Sorry, but Cameron totally mailed that one in. The characters, the story.....all VERY cliche. Whatever. It was a good "escapism" movie, but overrated (post-avatar depression....really??).
The Lovely Bones - another beautiful movie, something very different, but again there was something very lacking about the story. I'd read somewhere that it was about a dead girl that helps her family cope with her murder. I'd also heard it was about a dead girl that helps her family find her killer. Yeah, her family copes and they discover her killer, but none of these events have anything to do with her. And Susuan Sarandon's role was completely out of place in the movie. At one point her character has a light-hearted musical montage that makes no damn sense whatsoever. And I think Ebert said that heaven turned out to be some sort of celestial Facebook....which was a hysterical yet accurate observation.
The Book of Eli - just saw it tonight really enjoyed it. But I have to admit that many things that happen are pretty improbable, given the twist at the end. But I was entertained, I thought Denzel and Gary (yeah, we're on a first name basis) were both awesome. And plus...Titus Pullo.....HELLO!...*swoon*.
That's all I got for now.

This years Oscar nominations are a joke.
10 nominations for best picture????
And frankly the movies they have picked to shower with adoration were mostly overhyped crap.
Up in the Air.....Boring. Very Very Boring, I get it. America is downsizing, thanks for letting me know George, how is the $15 million a movie treating you.
Precious....Poverty Porn. She's so poor and her parents suck. Black People in the projects are uneducated??? I would have never known if it weren't for this movie. Thank you again Hollywood for letting me know about social issues 5 decades late.
Avatar...Pochahontas and Ferngully had a baby and wrapped it in CGI. And for all the money it has made It still hasn't broke even.
The Hurt Locker. Started well, but by the end was just another phony Hollywood attempt to let me know how to feel about the war. Oh and Soldiers are bad, bad people. Can they just once make a movie about Iraq that doesn't paint every other troop as a war loving asshole?
And lets just roll out the same batch of liberal douchebags to nominate for actor and actress this year just like last year. I love how an actor can't get the nomination if his politics are wrong. Or how all an actor has to do to get nominated is select the most slanted role available. "In this movie I play a poor, mentally retarded, gay soldier, who's against the war, but no one will let me pursue my dream of teaching inner city children about abortion because I'm a woman"..."Where's my Oscar?"
How the Oscar's still get treated like some golden hight and not just like the fluff it is, I will never know? It's the Grammy's without the auto-tune.

I watched Vickie Christina Barcelona this weekend. Really good movie (although I'm a Woody Allen fan so I tend to like most of his stuff). Good wife/girlfriend movie too. It's relationship based but men can live vicariously through Javier Bardem's character, the definition of cool IMO.

I don't think anything pleases you. Two years ago you were complaining about NCFOM winning an Oscar. That was the epitome of no fluff. I got nothing like what you got from The Hurt Locker. It was a balls to the wall look at soldiers who deal with EID's in Iraq. What are you talking about?
I have not seen A Serious Man, yet.

TEN movies nominated for best picture this year and I still didn't see a single one of them.
(Come to think of it, I think I went to the movies exactly 4 times last year.)

NCFOM is one of my favorite films. And I never complined about it winning the Oscar, I just didn't get it the first time I saw it, partially because the theater I saw it in had crappy sound and crappy soundproofing. Partially because it is a movie you need to see more than once.
And If you didn't see the slanted message at the end of Hurt Locker you were to caught up in the explosions. "The 'Good Soldiers' don't want to be here. Only the psycho's with personality issues, want to be in Iraq." "Good people still hate the war even if they are soldiers, and if you like being a soldier, it's because you are an adrenaline junkie who can't even function in society."

NO NO NO, sir! Not even close to the message (if there really was an intended message). There are men in this world who are psychologically molded to handle "war". Just like there are men cut out to be mathematicians, neurosurgeons, ....., whatever (comedian?). This was a simple case of a man with a gift and a little bit of luck! The movie was about EID's.. Its not that complicated.

Yes, this.
The movie clearly stated its message at the beginning: "war is a drug."
The Hurt Locker had little to do with politics - the story could have taken place during any war throughout human history.

All the complaints and no suggestions of your own. What films do you consider to be worthy of the best picture nomination?
by the way, i LOVED "Up in the Air"
