I read an article that said the Bears might try to bring both Peppers and Rolle on. I guess they are considering getting that defense back to where it was before they lost some key players.

They are also without their first two draft picks, so free agency is all they can hope for.

Somebody will overpay for Peppers and Rolle. I'm putting money on Chicago (obviously). however, I don't think it'll fix their defense much. Rolle can't cover, and Peppers is 30 and lazy.

Which is why everyone knocked your comment about Booby earlier? And I was obviously talking fantasy only earlier in this thread. So keep your comments to yourself and stay on topic.

No they're not smoking. There's no cap. There's no market really. The biggest names are Thomas Jones and Julius Peppers. Solid guys but the 1st tier talent isn't there in the free agency. That's why I laughed at everyone screaming Jerry is going to buy a championship because of no cap. No Cap = teams are going to retain their OWN players. I think someone is going to get a steal in Kampman from the Packers. He's coming off injury. He can't demand big money.

I hate how our divisional foes are ALWAYS the ones to sign major pieces every year. Why can't a guy like Rolle end up with the Browns or the Rams? He HAS to go to the Giants? Great!!!
I am just glad that Peppers didn't sign with Philly.

It's in the "Dallas-Mavs.com stuff" forum and it's been renamed to something about the ugliness of one's spouse.

Eh, Washington wins the offseason championship every year, and that still doesn't seem to help them much on the football field. I think the big name free agents tend to get overpaid anyways. The way to build your team is through the draft and by shrewdly signing players that flew under the radar for whatever reason.

Well, it isn't like signing big-name players = your team sucks. Washington has just been a really stupid franchise that tried to ONLY buy their wins, mostly with older players.
A combination of both is the way to go, and that is definitely what you see from the other two teams in our division. It is what you WILL see from Washington now as well, seeing as how Shanahan will have it no other way. For that matter, it is what Dallas has done. I just hate seeing marquee guys go to our divisional foes. There is no way to argue it, NY is better today than they were two weeks ago.
Here is hoping we knock the draft out of the park and stay on top of the division. NY beat us twice last year and I don't want to see that happen again, (for the record, I don't want to see any team from our division do that).

ahhh..looks like what i posted earlier wasn't really off topic. Now gimme my rep!

DALLAS -- The agent for Greg Ellis said the veteran pass rusher is open to returning to the Dallas Cowboys.
Ellis, just one season into a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, was released Monday, saving the team $2.5 million. Ellis tied for the team lead with seven sacks last season while playing defensive end, but he was hampered by knee and shoulder problems during the second half of the season.
Ellis' agent, James Williams, said Tuesday night his client is open to returning to the Cowboys, who drafted him in the first round in 1998. He still is eighth in franchise history with 77 sacks.

Williams said Ellis is open to coming off the bench, something that bothered the outside linebacker at the end of his tenure in Dallas.
Ellis and the Cowboys parted ways last spring, as the team wanted to give Anthony Spencer the full-time job at outside linebacker.
Spencer emerged with six sacks, 36 quarterback pressures and a team-leading nine tackles for loss.
The Cowboys could use Ellis as a third-down pass rusher, something coach Wade Phillips was trying to get him to do when he was here.

Hell no. Especially with Victor Butler and Brandon Williams here. A four-deep rotation at OLB is fine. It will be interesting to see how Jason Williams develops behind Brooking on the inside. This could wind up being a dynamic group if he starts challenging Keith for playing time.

rumors are that the cowboys were shopping barber. now the boys are saying..NO NO, barber is not on the market.
One thing is for certain: If Barber gets traded, i'm going to get pissed. I don't want to have to buy another G D jersey. Plus, i like barber

Hamlin probably gone, Flozell might be next
Quote:
Ken Hamlin indicates his run with Cowboys is over
If Twitter is to be believed, Ken Hamlin is no longer a Cowboy.
Hamlin made the announcement via his Twitter account:
"I would like to say to all of my fans that I appreciate all the love that you have showed me in Dallas. It was a good run..... Thanks"
A source indicated that a move would happen but nothing official has come from the team. After missing the first day of the off-season conditioning program on Monday, Hamlin had been working out at Valley Ranch every day since.
Hamlin was scheduled to make $5.596 million this year with $1.09 million guaranteed remaining on the contract he signed in 2008. Hamlin joined the Cowboys in 2007 on a one-year deal and made the Pro Bowl after picking off a career-high five passes and making 102 tackles.
Since signing the six-year, $39 million deal, Hamlin had just one interception. His value was more as a quarterback presence in the secondary than a playmaker the last two seasons.
If Hamlin is released, the Cowboys have Alan Ball, who started three games in Hamlin's absence last season because of an ankle sprain, and Mike Hamlin as in-house candidates at free safety. It's possible they could look in the first round at safety. They visited this week with Georgia Tech's Morgan Burnett and South Florida's Nate Allen and like Texas' Earl Thomas. LSU's Chad Jones also visited this week.
Hamlin and veteran tackle Flozell Adams have been viewed as possible candidates to be cut this off-season. Without an extended collective bargaining agreement, the Cowboys can cut a player and not worry about salary-cap ramifications. Adams is scheduled to make a $5 million base salary with a $2.5 million roster bonus due in June.

I hope Earl Thomas is still on the board when the Cowboys pick. I'm not sure how confident I'd be if the Cowboys had Alan Ball and Mike Hamlin competing for a starting job, even though I do like both players.

Bothers me a little that we are letting Flo go. Is Free ready? I was reading someone on a Cowboys message board who went through the Vikings game and said that Free was in the right place, but he was simply getting bullrushed by Allen. Are the Cowboys going to reach now for an offensive tackle in the draft?
Flo is 35 so maybe it's time to make this move anyways, but he still gave some good production at times last year and gave the franchise a lot of good years at LT. Now that spot is probably going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, question marks of the offseason.

It would be great to move up to grab Thomas, but I don't know if they have the ammunition to get that done. The Packers (pick 23), the Eagles (pick 24), and the Cardinals (pick 26) would jump all over Thomas before the Cowboys have a chance to grab him. Even if they shop Barber, I would think the best they could get for him would be a second round pick, most likely a third due to injury concerns.
I'm not too high on Taylor Mays. He looks like Roy Williams 2.0 to me. If Thomas doesn't fall to them or they don't move up to get him, they will probably grab a tackle.
I would love to see them release Newman today being that he is due 9 million, and you have two starting-caliber corners in Jenkins and Scandrick. Of course that would add another position of need for the Cowboys, especially in the nickel. But if they did land Thomas, he has the ability to move to nickel corner which would mean Ball and Michael Hamlin would be the nickel safeties.
There will be a flood of salary cap casualties this year, so there should be plenty of veterans available to bolster depth. If nothing else, the cuts today make the upcoming draft the most interesting in recent memory.

Shouldn't you start a new thread...after all, this has little to do with the Cowboys, outside of a different NFL team making a trade with yet another NFL team...hmmmm, perhaps an NFL Offseason Thread, so we don't get this confused with actual Cowboys news.
BTW, I heard that the Titans have a returning player on their roster...
Any updates yet on the arena league?
Has anyone heard the latest on Quincy Carter...wasn't McScabb his Mentor or something like that?

What's Left In Restricted Free Agency
Defensive end Marcus Spears signed his one-year restricted tender on Tuesday. With the April 15 deadline to sign offer sheets fast approaching, here are the Cowboys' remaining unsigned restricted free agents:
* WR Miles Austin (first- and third-round tender, $3.168 million)
* S Gerald Sensabaugh (second-round tender, $1.815 million)
* DE Stephen Bowen (second-round tender, $1.759 million)
* DE Jason Hatcher (second-round tender, $1.759 million)
* WR Sam Hurd (second-round tender, $1.759 million)
* S Pat Watkins (original draft choice tender, $1.176 million)
* C Cory Procter (second-round tender, $1.759 million)
* DT Junior Siavii (original draft choice tender, $1.101 million)
* OT Pat McQuistan (original draft choice tender, $1.176 million)
* C Duke Preston (original draft choice tender, $1.226 million)
Defensive back Alan Ball also hasn't signed his exclusive rights tender yet. These are all basic formalities, unless someone like Austin or Sensabaugh gets a bite from another team. Given the lack of restricted free agent movement across the league, that seems unlikely.

Austin Working Out With Personal Trainer
In what might or might not be a move to create some leverage in impending contract negotiations, wide receiver Miles Austin has been working out with a trainer of his own this spring, rather than with teammates in the Cowboys' voluntary off-season program at Valley Ranch.
Austin has remained in touch with his coaches, so the move isn't necessarily seen as one of defiance. It could be that he simply prefers to follow a training regimen of his own choosing this year, as some other players have done. Running back Marion Barber, for instance, is working out at the performance center of former Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson, in nearby Plano.
While Austin could return to the team anytime, he's spent most of the first week and a half of the conditioning program in Los Angeles. Both he and the Cowboys have expressed interest in working out a long-term deal, but the front office hasn't offered further details.
Austin is a restricted free agent, protected by the highest-level tender offer, of first- and third-round draft picks. His deadline to sign an offer sheet with another team is April 15.
|
Hopefully there's no Austin-related contract drama around the corner...

Aww fluffy-stuff, roster moves within the division do have something to do with the Cowboys. They have to play those teams twice every year and occasionally in the playoffs.

I find it funny that I come in here and prank on the need to start a new thread...only to find that a new thread actually got started
Then to get one of my favorite fans trying to reason with me...some funny stuff...thanks for giving me something to smile at today...
Have a good day...oh and for the record, I'ld rather have Jason Campbell than D. McScab. But hey, Eagles/Redskins two teams that I love to see in misery due to loss after loss after loss!!!
