Official Threads Killed This Website
I don't post here anymore. I have been way too busy.
But I still love the Mavs. And when I log on to this site after months of furious activity in my life, I see the same thing as when I left.
The Official Offseason Thread.
The only place where anything posts anything about the offseason.
So there is one entire thread for the offseason. One entire thread for the general NBA season. Why not just make one entire thread for the season?
These threads have made this site totally useless to me and I suspect many other former semi regular users.
I propose a ban on official "season long" or "offseason long" threads to try to vary the conversation here.
Otherwise, this site is pretty much useless to me.
Just saying.

This complaint again?
It's not like the mods are rolling all of new threads into one "official" thread - if you want more threads, then MAKE them.
The quality of this site is contingent on the participation of its users...

I would say that the people using those threads and reading them on a regular basis are getting what they want out of it. If someone else want something different, then they should facilitate it.
No one is being told what to do. Certainly not now in the middle of the off-season when there is nothing to talk about.

I think there are things to talk about! And we'll probably have 10-15 minutes worth of Mavs talk on my show tomorrow.

The problem is that the board is dominated by posters who do not want coherent conversations.

Or are incapable of coherent conversations.
October will be here soon, and things will change. I hope.

The official threads have saved this site from the herp-derp, 4chan mentality that has ruined Fisher's forums. IMHO.

This.
It's just the lack of quality posters that create the issue. The front page is filled with threads that have pretty much covered all topics there is to talk about. Schedule, Dojo, new uniforms, Damp for Chandler, Summer League, Wood Chip (lol)....heck even Mike Fisher got his own thread. What kinda thread are you looking for Hitman?

I dont get it, every really important topic has his own thread, so whats the problem?
Offseason is boring, so why not an own offseason thread for all the small things that kind of not even deserve an own thread? I know board with a thread "Topics that doesnt deserve an own thread" and i think thats a nice idea.

In an effort to preserve quality, we have reduced ourselves to a band of 10 in the offseason. You can visit the site biweekly and be up to date.

I think that all those topics that Devinharriswillstart mentioned as individual threads were (are?) discussed in the "official" thread, too. So if you want to keep with what's being discussed, you do what? Read the individual thread and search through the official thread? It's a mess.

I don't believe the problem is preserving quality, but more that people have a different opinion of what quality is. I also don't think there is just one reason why there have been a lack of posters in general lately. Anyway, who is stopping Hitman from starting a new thread?

I'd love it if Hitman posted more often - an influx of knowledgeable posts/posters would go a long way into restoring the quality of this site...
(well, unless you consider flame wars with Cadbane to be the pinnacle of quality posts!)

You know why we even have an official Offseason Thread? Because some emotional fan gave up on his team during the first half of Game 6. The Mavs came back to take the lead later on, so had they held on and won, he would've looked like an even bigger douchebag than he already does.
On the other hand, I find that Hitman's threads always bore me.

Nice try douchebag.
Losing to the Spurs wasnt the reason for the thread, the reason was because we were going straight to offseason (yes, the moment we looked like shit and blabla comebacks sure, but we looked like shit, so yes, i was emotional). But that wasnt the reason for the thread because i would have open such a thread after any loss, first round, Lakers, finals. Because like i said, i like offseason threads for all the small crap that doesnt deserve an own thread.
And now complaining about double discussions because of the evil offseason thread, seriously?
Draftnight. I opened a thread about Jones with all the draft informations, quotes and links: http://www.dallas-mavs.com/vb/showthread.php?t=36440
Minutes later Crapbane opens a new thread (just with a crappy press note) about Jones because of the subsection. http://www.dallas-mavs.com/vb/showthread.php?t=36441
I link my thread, even ask to merge and nothing happens. Everybody started to use the new thread and the older one with the better informations went to hell...
And that wasnt the first time i asked to merge my thread with another one so the posted informations dont get lost because ppl started to use other threads and the merging etc didnt happen.
So for me thats a bigger issue about the quality on this board than an offseason thread that some ppl dont like.
But hey ok, i wont open threads anymore, have fun on this board Dirka

While I agree there has been a lack of traffic and really good discussion lately (I blame a very slowww offseason, because it was fine up until us getting Chandler), I can't really get behind the OP here. You start this whole thing off by saying "I don't post here anymore. I have been way too busy."... So, you want this community to flourish and operate the way YOU want it to, but you don't want to contribute or do anything to help steer it in that direction.
It's been stated many times but no one is forcing people to post in the official threads. Honestly, I look at the new post thing anyway so it doesn't matter to me if stuff is spread out or in one thread... I read it all and contribute whatever I want.
Like DHWS said.. right now on the main page there is the official thread plus a thread on Tyson Chandler, Mavericks Podcasts, Ian Mahinmi, JJB, Schedule, Updated Jerseys, Roddy B's Injury, Fish, Dirk, the classic Primal Scream thread, the WOOD chip, Hollinger, Dojo, another Dirk thread, Damp trade, Summer League and Jeremy Lin.
IMO those are a LOT of topics.. especially considering how uneventful the offseason has been. So lets say you come here and you want to talk about something that doesn't fit those threads, lets say Jason Terry's role next season.... MAKE A THREAD ABOUT IT. Don't come complain that there aren't any threads about it when you can easily make one yourself. This isn't a site with hired bloggers expected to give you easy and entertaining information. Just like the Mavs only go as far as Dirk takes them.. this board only goes as far as the posters take it. Lead by example, not by bitching.

I'm not so sure the sacrifice isn't worth it. I have no problem going over to db.com or even read spurstalk for the off season if I know it will make the quality over here great during the regular season (when the traffic will surely pick back up).

My possum got loose in this rain tonight. He's out in the middle of the road playing dead, I think... I don't have an umbrella so hopefully he will decide he isn't funny and waltz his soggy fat ass back to the front door...

I don't think there are any "possums" in the United States. I've always thought there were "opossums".
That's all I have to say about this.

I probably don't even look at this section of the site more than once a month. Nothing catches my eyes at all. And, as a grown up, I don't have time to dig through an official thread with hundreds of posts for anything interesting. And that whole "virus" started a while ago, thanks to relatively new posters pushing an agenda that new posts were stupid and would better be left to some "master" thread. I gave up when that idea took hold.
But that's fine. I don't miss it terribly. If that's what the fans who've just happened to surface during our good years prefer, I'm not really one to pass judgment. Of course, I bet none of them even know who DJ is. Or what LMFF is.
I miss the good old days.

I have mixed feelings on this issue.
1.) Yes, if this board was full of useless threads and posts by idiots/trolls, that would really bring the quality of the board down. That would be a turn off. So, in a sense; I'm glad that we don't have too much activity going on. Remember this is a mavs forum first and foremost. It is off-season. What else do you expect? Also, there hasn't really been too much action with the mavs this off season.
2.) I actually kind of like the official off season dallas cowboys thread that is going on over in other sports talk. I've been reading the whole thread, and i don't have to jump back and forth between different threads. I know what is going on. If i stop by every week or so, i can browse back a page or two, and read up. Also, if something with the cowboys does happen, like the recent Miles Austin signing. I know where to go to discuss it and talk about....which i did a little bit ago.
3.) I'd say the mods do a really good job here. They don't get mad when you bump 5 year old threads, because hey; that stuff is funny. They don't come down on you if you create a new thread. I mean, unless you are at troll. then GTFO..but, as long as your thread is at least somewhat useful. Go for it.
4.) I'd say if you want more stuff to talk about or something new, start a thread. If its worthwhile, people will post in it. If not, oh well. Better luck next time. Also, sorry about the numbering system. It makes no sense.

Yeah, this concept seem too difficult for the "I don't post here anymore but I want to dictate how others post here" crowd to comprehend...
I guess they left their common sense back in the Good Ol' Days...

I think common sense would be that anything half-discussed in an official thread and half-discussed in a separate thread isn't going to be very well discussed at all, and that moving anything from an official thread to it's own thread would be a complex mess, and that almost all of the participation in any discussion is reading and replying to posts, not posting original discussion topics.
