Yeah, Carlisle said he's still pretty raw - he's only been playing organized hoops for about 5 years or so (which is obviously more relevant at PG than at SG...)

Yeah he did look average at best BUT it was summer league after all. Maybe one of those guys will ever see the floor the same time he will in a reg season game. He's not quite ready to run PG duty at a high enough level, but I don't think he was set up to shine as a PG in that SL situation.

For Caron this year he doesn't have to score a ton we still have Terry, Booby, Dojo, Marion ect around Dirk the most important thing is for him to be effecient, last year he only averaged 3.9 free throws as a mav and shot 76 % (well below career average) at the line, both need to be picked up.
My expectation for him are: 15 + ppg, 5 + rpg, 1.5 + steals per game, 45 % + field goal shooting, 4.5 + free throws per game, 82 % + free throw shooting, 1.25 A/TO ratio.

Too many contested jump shots. Disappointing so far.

Butler is more frustating than Josh Howard. And it is funny how reputations in the league get cemented and never change. Tough juice should be more appropriately nicknamed Downy Soft.

I mentioned this in the game thread, but part of his problem is, he's just not very quick. Because of this, defenders are usually able to set-up for his drives, and that's why he gets called for a lot of charges (Wizards fans harped on this too) and he ends up missing contested lay-ups. Still, he is taking way too many contested 18 footers for my liking. I think playing the three should alleviate some of his problems off the dribble, because his defender won't be as quick as at the 2. I'd like to see him try to create more like he used to with the Wizards. He can pass better than Howard, but hasn't shown it much here. He had a very very nice drive and flip to Tyson for an and 1 last night. I'd like to see more of that.

Caron Butler doesn’t view himself as Dirk Nowitzki’s designated sidekick.
But when Nowitzki looks at the situation, he sees Butler as the man who can make a huge difference – and be part of what could be one of the most dangerous forward pairings in the league.
It’s going to come down to variety, Nowitzki said.
“When Caron mixes up his game, it makes all the difference,” he said. “We all know I’m a jump shooter and if we both fall into the trap of shooting jumpers all the time, that’s not good.”

The more I think about it, the more I feel like Butler will be gone by the trade deadline.

I would bet large amounts of money on this.
Although, the impending lockout is going to change the dynamic of the deadline. Teams probably won't be as desperate to unload salary as they normally would be.

Caron is not a good fit for this team....last year we were arguing if Tuff Juice or Kevin Martin would be a better fit...majority chose Caron mainly b/c we knew we would also be getting Haywood in the deal....I only remember Thig pushing for Kevin Martin
I would give my pinky finger to have to Kevin Martin right now

I wouldnt bet on it, there shouldnt be too many clear upgrades that could be available beside the typical pipe dreams Paul/Melo/Iggy...

Then you weren't paying attention. Not sure that is correct he was pushing for Kevin Martin. I know for a fact I was tho.

To stay just with Chandler/Ajinca and Mahinmi at center to beat the Lakers?
Chandler as only expiring that you just can trade for another center anyway at the deadline?
Right now we have Butler and Haywood AND Butler, Stevenson and Chandler (thanks to Haywood) as tradeable expirings...

True, but the availability of comparable talents who represent drastically better fits with this team is a virtual certainty.

I was hoping for Iggy/Dalembert over Butler/Haywood, but if Damp can't net you LeBron, then what good is hope?

After watching Caron last season, im conviced that we need a true SG, and althought I love to have Iggy, I dont think he would be a good fit either....this team as constructed will need a consistent 20 point/per scorer besides Dirk and Iggy wont consistently score 20, maybe 16/7/5, which is nice dont get me wrong

There were only 10 guards in the NBA who averaged over 20 PPG last season - Kobe & Wade were two of them. Arenas and Martin were two more, but they both missed half the season. Stephen Jackson was another one, but he's not any more of a shooting guard than Butler. Brandon Roy, Joe Johnson and Derrick Rose managed 20+, but none of those guys are available. Maybe Tyreke Evans or Monta Ellis could be had, but I seriously doubt it...
Chauncy Billups averaged 19 PPG and even he's not available. The drop-off after him is so steep that names like "Jason Terry" start to top the list.
20 PPG SG's are a rarity in this league - if you don't already have one, then you probably need to figure out a different way to win...

I remember my 1-2-3 preference was Martin, Iggy, then Butler. Not even because I disliked Butler, but that former two had been talked about so much I had pretty much dismissed Butler as even being an option anymore. I remember debating back and forth why Martin would be a better fit than Iggy, and then conceding that if we got either I'd be happy, and never did Butler get a lot of serious discussion. He got some, of course, this is a message board, but I'm pretty sure most people had our sights on the former two, not Caron.
It was all about Haywood, though. They weren't going to do the deal without him, meaning that they may have preferred Iggy or Martin over Butler, but they preferred Butler+Haywood over all of them.

Other than his rebounding you can't really complain how he has been playing of late, save maybe yesterday
