Mavs nearly traded for Kobe in 07
Not sure whether this is thread worthy but what the heck, it's awfully quiet during this time in the summer.
What are your thoughts on what could have possibly happened having one of our most hated players at the helm?

I remember hearing something along these lines, but the word back then was that L.A. wanted Dirk in exchange for Kobe and Cuban turned it down because he wanted to pair Dirk and Kobe together... In hindsight, I can't say that I blame him, considering that Dirk carried his team to a championship with a LOT less to work with than Kobe ever had during his runs.
But if we could've gotten Kobe for JET/Stack/Harris/J-Ho/Damp, then it would've been a no-brainer... Too bad the basketball gods favor Mitch Kupachak for whatever reason (does he have incriminating pics of David Stern with Jerry Sandusky or something?)

I remember we could of traded for Pau (Grizzlies days) for J-Ho straight up but Cuban said no.

I think we need a thread for each of Cuban's quotes.

Makes sense - Dirk and Pau would've been redundant and J-Ho still had promise before he stepped one toke over the line...

That obviously turned out poorly, but Howard did seem to have so much more promise in his earlier years when he played with hustle and grit.
That said, some guys (chum is one, there may be others) were hesitant about Howard due to his intelligence, and in hindsight, that concern was more than justified.

I think it's the off season and the forum can more than handle a few new threads.

In general, I'm never a fan of dumb players such as Josh Howard, Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler..yada yada. They're just so prone to making stupid mistakes at the wrong time. It's also what bugged me about Jason Terry. He wasn't at the Josh Howard level, but his stupid mistakes seemed to come at horrible times.

If you actually think about it, what better options did the lakers have at the time if they were forced to trade Kobe? To me, they wouldn't have had a better deal than Harris, Jho, Jet, and picks. Please correct me if i'm wrong in that regard.
It kind of bugs me to think that we had that opportunity and in turn get multiple championships... Having Dirk and Kobe would've resulted to exactly that.

Just like the other time we got an unhappy Laker for scraps, right?

Not exactly the same backgrounds between Kobe and Odom, right?

I just find it difficult to say that we'd win "multiple championships" with a guy that is a ballhog and notoriously inefficient when he got traded to us under a sour-grapes situation (a la Odom).
I just don't see it.

I do think correlating that the last scraps for Laker deal for that potential Laker deal as the exact same thing is somewhat misguided, based on the characteristics of the guys in question. It's been well established that Odom has had a history of issues that have derailed him in some form or fashion. He's also known as one of the most enigmatic players in the last 10-12 years due to his overall skill set and what the end result has produced. NBA TV had the replay of Kobe's 81-point game on the other day and the third biggest takeaway from the game (after Kobe and the total lack of defense) was the fact Odom was so scatterbrained in that game.
Kobe has his blemishes on and off the court, no doubt about it. He's a different kind of cat tho. Kobe is the kind of guy who will be presented with a sour grapes situation and either block it out or use it as fuel to prove opinions are wrong. In this scenario, he easily could have gone off the rails to do it his way or he could buy in to the right system and ease up on his hero ball.
It's something we'll never know, but I still think the point you're making is not the right assessment when looking at it. That being said, I don't see the combination of DirKobe leading toward a conclusion that would directly lead to annual championship parades. That totally downplays the importance of coaching, chemistry, health and other intangibles. The only thing that is certain is that the combination of those two players would be ridiculously interesting to watch.

I think we ultimately agree. I'm not saying that he'd have been as terrible as Odom or have had such a precipitous drop-off in play, I just think it's way premature to say that we'd have "multiple championships" as if it were a sure thing. Maybe it would have worked out, I just think there are plenty of variables and red flags that make a Dirk-Kobe combination less than a sure thing to win championship in addition to problems of cohesion and play-style.
