The stage is set for OJ Mayo
WARNING this will be a long post. i know we all are sad that Dirk had to get surgery and will be out for up to six weeks. Im a big OJ Mayo fan have been since he was in high school. for a player so highly regarded (by some) and IMO unfairly scrutinized (by most).... this is a golden opportunity. Coming into the league actually going through workouts with the likes of russell westbrook, eric gordon, derrick rose, micheal beasley, and kevin love mayo was seen as the best. one report stated he had the most polished overall game out of those in the draft. Mayo had two great years in the NBA (rookie and sophomore season) coming in second place for rookie of the year. i watched a lot of grizzlies games and he just looked out of place coming off of the bench. Seriously you dont send a player that did what mayo did his first two years to the bench for tony allen that you could bank on him missing an open layup at least once a game. the stage is set for Mayo to reintroduce himself to the basketball world. he has a starting slot and a green light. these weeks without Dirk can put him back in the place of one of the elite up and coming guards in the league. some quotes to sum up his game.
"There was no question that we were watching a player with a supreme work ethic, which becomes most noticeable when you take a look at the way he shoots the ball—showing outstanding mechanics that are identical every time, with terrific footwork, balance and arc on his shot, setting his feet instantaneously as soon as he catches the ball, and never looking rattled even when he has a man in his face heavily contesting his shot. Clearly this is the best part of his game"
"The first thing that stands out about Mayo in this setting is just how smooth and instinctive a scorer and overall player he is. Everything he does is extremely effortless—his footwork, balance, body control and ability to create separation from his defender and create a shot for himself"
"He has very good size at 6-5, with a terrific body". He’s a powerful athlete with outstanding body control and great ball-handling skills going either left or right, and excellent instincts finding and creating shots for himself, as well as for others. Mayo’s court vision is much better than his 2.9 assists per game would indicate. He brings the ball up the court regularly and for the most part looks quite unselfish executing his team’s half-court sets, making the extra pass and finding the open man when he’s trapped/double-teamed off a pick and roll play time after time, but too often only to see his teammates miss a wide open shot.”
"The silver lining from this season has to do with Mayo’s defense, which has been nothing short of outstanding so far, when he’s put his mind to it. He’s doing a terrific job putting pressure on the ball, denying space and overwhelming his matchups with his combination of size, strength, length and lateral quickness. The work he did on Derrick Rose in Madison Square Garden was particularly notable, rendering him fairly ineffective when were matched up against each other. Mayo still needs to show that same commitment on each and every possession, but the early signs have been fairly promising"
these quotes are from scouts from him when he was coming in the league. IMO they sum up the potential that not only is there but was shown his first two years in memphis. we live in the flashy sportscenter media era now. and if a player isnt giving out facials every night that players tends to be forgotten. ive heard the knock from people saying Mayo isnt athletic or explosive enough. i dont agree he is a power jumper as you will see in my closing videos. Mayo IMO needs the right coach to succeed.... is uncle ricky that coach? i hope so because Dallas is a class A organization and i would love to see him sign a long term deal and help the mavs climb back to the top.

tl;dr but I am VERY anxious to see how Mayo responds, as he'll be the clear #1 option until Dirk returns. He had some success in that role at times during his first couple of seasons with Memphis (as Marc Gasol was developing). I don't think we can do more than tread water with Dirk out, but if we're at .500 or close to it by the time he's ready to come back, I think we have a very good chance at getting home-court advantage in the first round.

Mayo may be our #1 option but only because Kaman isn't healthy. Kaman is the best offensive player we have outside Dirk.

Agreed.
Mayo just looks to be a little too hot and cold. Hope I'm wrong...

Mayo is hot and cold just like any guard. He may not get as hot as Terry or Kobe, but he's still a guy that can carry you and can score a streak of efficient points, which is not the kind of play you want from a #1 option, but it's fine for a #2 or #3.
It's nice to have both Kaman and him, honestly. If OJ is hot, he can go on a roll. If he's cold, then you send it inside to a more reliable guy like Kaman. Before this year we only had Terry-- who, while better than OJ is still a streaky player. It's what the Lakers should have done on many occasions when Kobe was cold-- Kobe just doesn't know how to share and admit that he has cold streaks.
1st option - Dirk
2a - Mayo
2b- Kaman

people think im a blind oj mayo fan.... IM NOT! im going to hold him accountable as a player. but like others im not going to dismiss him and say he wont be great because of a preseason game. the reality is Mayo has all the tools be be a successful starting guard in this league for many years to come. its going to come down to coaching and system IMO. people just look at great players and dont see the behind the scene stuff. the coaches helping them work on and understand the game of basketball. also where would people like MJ and Kobe be without the triangle offense? im not totally convinced Dallas and uncle ricky is the key for Mayo but they are a class A organization.... and i hope it works out for both sides this season and this coming summer.

So far Mayo sucks. Simple as that.
Defense, rebounding, shot selection. WTF.
ps: yesterday
Kidd: 24min 5 rebounds 4 assists 1 steal 1-2 threes
Mayo: 30min 3 rebounds 2 assists 0 steals 1-5 threes

Yea, this has been the case with so many NBA players and professional athletes. Sometimes it just doesn't work out and you can't just blame the coach or a system. I think he looks decent so far tho.

That's a random comparison, considering that those two play different positions...

It tells quite a bit when a 39yo 6-4 guy grabs more long rebounds in less minutes than a 24yo 6-4 guy.
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/maver...-d-to-his-game

There’s a lot of truth to that, but here’s the trouble: The Grizzlies were significantly worse defensively with Mayo on the floor in each of his four seasons in Memphis.
According to 82games.com, the Grizzlies allowed at least 3.2 points per 100 possessions more with Mayo on the floor in each season. The difference was an eye-popping 9.1 points during Mayo’s rookie season, when he averaged a career-best 18.5 points per game.
The Grizzlies demoted Mayo to sixth man the last two seasons so they could get defensive stopper Tony Allen in the starting lineup. It might have stunted Mayo’s development, but the move helped Memphis make the playoffs in back-to-back years after a four-season postseason drought.

In a sample size of one preseason game? You could better predict their performance this season by inspecting their feces.

You wouldn't be able to because Kidds so awesome, his feces would be too busy boxing you out and rebounding. Maybe even draining long dueces with it's toe on the line. Something something bricking a layup.

Spam! Spam & plagiarism. Plagiarism & hype. Hype & prayer.
Can we stop this until he actually plays? We know who Mayo is. Cuban didn't sprinkle miracle grow on him or feed him Kidd's magically hard to get to fecal power. Mayo is a shooting guard who can't shoot and will be asked to fill Jets role.
Make him play within his role and he'll be fine. It's absurd to even suggest he's a first option. Have you all become like Spurs fans?

yeah i believe the same. everyone wants to say the world is coming to an end and he is crap... all due to a preseason game. like i said the stage is set for him i believe he will be great this year and have a breakout year. people forget how good and technically sound he is. im not a big kobe fan but this is his quote on oj mayo....
“I think the world of him,” Bryant said. “I think he’s extremely talented. I think he has a great overall game that a lot of young players don’t have in terms of skills. He can handle, he can shoot, he can pass, he’s fast, he’s quick, so that’s the whole package.”

have had about 7-8 assists if his bigs could knock down open shots. He has shown the ability to make plays for is team, looking forward to when Dirk comes back ( Kaman to a less extent).
In terms of efficiency, first I didn't like how the coach took Juice out in the beginning when Juice was flowing 3-4 FG at that point. When he came back in late in the 2nd to the end of the game just 1-10 FG, ouch. but man i just shake my head. It's like he wants to be inefficient. I just dont get it, why he is so in love with the long midrange off the dribble shot with a guy 3+inches taller than you in your face. If he just cuts that out, and just the ball into the paint he would instantly become an efficient player.
The tools are there though to have a breakout season, Juice if he just turns his aggression up, cuts down on silly off the dribble jumpers, and overdribbling. He is in for a special season 20+pg/4/5 stuff. Looking forward to it.

We as in Dallas fans actually hope even more than you OJ Mayo fans that the guy succeeds. After all he does play for our team. I also hope you're wrong about the big pay day. I'm hoping for a team friendly but fair deal for both sides and he stays a mav along with Collison and Kaman.

well go back and look at those maverick fans overreacting to his preseason games. i will call it now when he has his first two back to back bad games on the season.... all the good games will be forgotten. and yes i believe he deserves a nice payday. not saying 100+ million or anything but enough to be set.

His first few games will be forgotten soon, as will his bad ones that will come soon, bottom line is how the numbers end and how he plays in a team concept over the course of 82 games. Not how consistent he is, extremely streaky players are as valuable as consistent guys if they end with same numbers and team value. My biggest key for Mayo is his efficiency. His first 2 years in Memphis were very respectable (53.9% TS and 55.1 % TS). If he can have a TS% over 55 % while bringing good volume scoring which I am sure he will he will be in line for a good deal and be helping the Mavs a lot.

I'm most excited to see his ability to handle the ball, get into the paint and distribute, and play with efficiency.
The overall scoring stats will take a dip when Dirk gets back, but I'm seeing a FAR better version of Jason Terry in the making. As a matter of fact, if OJ keeps this up, comparisons to Terry might end of as a slight insult instead of a compliment.
